Wed May 14 201411:58Josh Fields recalled from Triple-A
Astros recalled RHP Josh Fields from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Fields was sent down a week ago after a string of poor performances for the big club. The Astros are hoping he's righted the ship after three scoreless innings at Oklahoma City. While Fields was in the mix for saves earlier this season, he's unlikely to be trusted in the ninth inning again anytime soon.

Wed May 7 201414:37Josh Fields optioned to Triple-A
Astros optioned RHP Josh Fields to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Fields was looking like the favorite for saves with the Astros just a couple weeks ago, but he's now headed to the minors after allowing nine runs over his last four appearances. Josh Zeid has replaced him on the roster.

Fri May 2 201417:15Josh Fields won't be used to close
Astros manager Bo Porter said Friday that he will not use Josh Fields in high-leverage situations for now.
Fields saved his second game of the season on April 22 but has been rocked for nine runs over his three appearances since then. He could eventually get another look in the ninth inning, but Porter will go with Chad Qualls and Anthony Bass for now.

Wed Apr 23 201418:47Fields blows save as Astros fall to Mariners
Josh Fields blew his first save of the season Wednesday in the Astros' loss to the Mariners.
Fields entered the game with the Astros leading 3-2. He gave up back-to-back singles to Robinson Cano and Corey Hart and then let up a one-out walkoff three-run shot to Kyle Seager. Fields is in a closer committee right now in Houston and appears unlikely to grab the job for himself anytime soon.

Wed Apr 23 201401:43Fields stops Mariners, earns 2nd save of year
Josh Fields earned his first save since April 2 and his second total in Tuesday's 5-2 win against Seattle, striking out one over a perfect ninth inning.
Outside of a shaky outing with a five-run lead earlier this month against the Blue Jays (3 runs, 2 earned), Fields hasn't coughed up a run, a stretch that has reached five straight appearances. Unless you play in an AL-only league, it's just too hard to own a Houston reliever in fantasy. Fields would hold some intrigue if the ninth-inning job was his, but he's going to keep sharing it with Anthony Bass, Chad Qualls, Matt Albers, and the guy from Section 157 that Bo Porter ran into outside the stadium before the game.

Thu Apr 10 201422:32Josh Fields can't finish off Blue Jays
After coming in with a 6-1 lead, Josh Fields allowed three runs -- two earned -- in the ninth Thursday against the Blue Jays.
Fields was pulled after retiring two of the five batters he faced, allowing Anthony Bass to come in and get a one-out save. While it wasn't a save situation for Fields tonight, this won't help his chances of getting the next save chance generated. As is, both he and Chad Qualls, who pitched a scoreless eighth tonight, have identical 4.91 ERAs and 1.91 WHIPs. It bodes well for Matt Albers perhaps getting some save opps once he returns from paternity leave.

Thu Apr 3 201413:25Josh Fields nails down save for Astros
Josh Fields struck out one over a perfect inning to earn the save in Wednesday's win over the Yankees.
Fields needed just 10 pitches to dispose of the Yankees in order, getting a popout and a foulout sandwiched around a strikeout of Brian Roberts. Matt Albers pitched before Fields and also looked terrific, giving up a hit but striking out the other four batters he faced. Chad Qualls was nowhere to be found after allowing a run on three hits Tuesday. The Astros bullpen has the makings of a true committee, at least until Jesse Crain (biceps) is ready, but Fields could be at the top of the pecking order right now.

Thu Mar 20 201416:53Josh Fields strikes out all three he faces
Josh Fields fanned all three batters he faced in the ninth Thursday against the Phillies.
Oddly, one of those hitters was a pitcher -- the Phillies let Sean O'Sullivan hit for himself in the ninth -- but at least two of the guys did, in fact, hit for a living. Fields has probably been the best of Houston's closer candidates this spring, with one run allowed and a 5/0 K/BB ratio in six innings. It's still unlikely, but maybe he'll get the gig over Chad Qualls on Opening Day.

Sat Feb 15 201408:27Josh Fields would like chance to close games
Josh Fields expressed his desire on Friday to compete for the Astros ninth-inning gig, but understands why a pair of veteran hurlers were brought in as well.
Jesse Crain and Chad Qualls were acquired via free agency this offseason, with Crain the leading candidate for saves in the Astros bullpen provided he's healthy to begin the season. Fields, who finished the season in that capacity, posted a 4.97 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 40/18 K/BB ratio over 38 innings of work in his rookie campaign.

Tue Sep 10 201301:45Fields allows homer but earns save anyway
Josh Fields allowed a solo homer but escaped to earn his fourth save of the season against the Mariners on Monday.
Fields entered the cushiest of save situation: A three-run ninth inning lead in Seattle. He settled down after Brad Miller's home run and didn't allow another base runner. Fields isn't a good fantasy closer -- he isn't even a good reliever, period, as his 5.91 ERA would attest -- but it appears as though he's leapfrogged Chia-Jen Lo as Bo Porter's preferred ninth-inning option. Lo coughed up two runs in the seventh inning and now owns a 5.40 ERA.

Fri Sep 6 201301:10Josh Fields earns third save of season
Josh Fields worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings to record his third save of the season Thursday against the A's.
The Astros' closer-by-committee is drama at its worst, a soap opera with non-existent ratings. Fields is a member of it, but would you believe that this is his first save since August 14? Chia-Jen Lo seemed to be the pilot of this airplane filled with lost souls, but he dropped to 0-3 when the Twins flogged him for four runs on Monday. Skipper Bo Porter hasn't called on Lo and his 5.25 ERA since. Mixed leaguers waste a roster spot on a Houston reliever at their own peril.

Sun Aug 18 201301:29Josh Fields gives up walkoff homer
Josh Fields took a loss by giving up Josh Hamilton's walkoff homer in the 10th inning Saturday.
Fields retired four Angels before surrendering the blast. He did pick up his second save against the A's on Wednesday, but he's behind Chia-Jen Lo in line for save chances right now.

Thu Aug 15 201301:58Fields strikes out two, earns 2nd save
Josh Fields struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning to earn his second save of the season on Wednesday against the A's.
Chia-Jen Lo had pitched in two straight games, so skipper Bo Porter elected to call on Fields, who was enjoying the one-week anniversary of his first career blown save, a three-run fiasco against the Red Sox. Lo, who hasn't allowed a run in six appearances, remains Houston's closer, while Porter's decision on Wednesday indicates that Fields is still next in line.

Thu Aug 8 201300:46Fields blows first save, takes loss to Sox
Josh Fields allowed three runs in an inning of work to register his first blown save of the year on Wednesday.
Fields picked up his first save on August 5 and promptly blew his first save two days later. He was called on to protect a 5-4 lead but Stephen Drew launched a three-run homer, Fields' sixth home run allowed in just 21 innings of work this year, to spoil his night. Regardless of whether he keeps the job after Wednesday, Fields is just too scary to rely on for saves.

Fri May 31 201317:35Astros activate RHP Fields from 15-day DL
Astros activated RHP Josh Fields from the 15-day disabled list.

Josh Fields (forearm) could be activated from the disabled list in 7-10 days.
Fields suffered a right forearm strain in the first week of the season and has appeared in four games at Double-A Corpus Christi during his rehab assignment. The Astros want to see Fields work consecutive games without any setbacks before he's activated from the DL.

Josh Fields (forearm) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Friday with High-A Quad Cities.
Fields is scheduled to throw two innings. The Rule 5 pick appeared in two games with the Astros in early April prior to being placed on the disabled list. If all goes well, he could return to the big club sometime this month.

Josh Fields (forearm) threw a 30-pitch bullpen session on Monday at about 90 percent intensity.

Thu Dec 6 201210:05Astros pick Josh Fields in Rule 5 Draft
Astros selected RHP Josh Fields from the Red Sox with the first pick in Thursday's Rule 5 Draft.
Fields posted a 2.01 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 78/18 K/BB ratio in 58 1/3 innings this past season between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket. The 27-year-old right-hander could land a middle relief job in Houston.
