SEATTLE (AP) â Julio UrĂas threw seven dominant innings of one-hit ball, striking out a career-high 11 and leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 1-0 win over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday. Corey Seager drove in the only run with a two-out single in the third inning after AJ Pollockâs leadoff double. Those were the Dodgersâ only hits in the game. Seattleâs lone hit against UrĂas (3-0) was Mitch Hanigerâs slow infield single with two outs in the third inning. Fri Apr 16 2021 | 02:28 | Ramírez helps Indians bounce back, beat White Sox 4-2 |
CHICAGO (AP) â Slumping slugger JosĂ© RamĂrez connected for a go-ahead, two-run homer off Lance Lynn in the sixth inning and the Cleveland Indians bounced back from being no-hit, beating the Chicago White Sox 4-2 on Thursday. After Carlos RodĂłn just missed a perfect game Wednesday night, there was a different kind of tension this time as the benches emptied in the bottom of the first. Adam Eaton singled and tried to advance when Indians right fielder Josh Naylor threw to third, hoping to get the lead runner. Eaton arrived ahead of the throw back to second, but was called out when his hand came off the bag while shortstop AndrĂ©s GimĂ©nez stood his ground and held the tag. Eaton grabbed GimĂ©nezâs leg, began barking and then pushed GimĂ©nez in the chest with two hands. Indians starter Aaron Civale plunked Eaton with a pitch in the upper arm in the third. Civale (3-0) allowed only a run â in the first â and five hits through six innings in his third straight strong start. Nick Wittgren and James... [ More] |

Mon Apr 5 2021 | 17:02 | Scherzer, COVID-depleted Nats finally set to play vs. Braves |
WASHINGTON (AP) â It's rare for there to be an abundance of intrigue associated with an otherwise mundane workout the day before a baseball club opens its regular season. Run the bases. Field. Hit. Yawn. In the Washington Nationals' case, the âfull-team workoutâ held at their stadium under a clear blue sky Monday afternoon was worth watching because it hardly involved the full team. A coronavirus outbreak has sidelined 11 players â four of whom tested positive for COVID-19 â and delayed Washington's first game that counts until Tuesday. âJust anxious to finally get our season going,â said Max Scherzer, slated to face the visiting Atlanta Braves on Tuesday. The Nationals haven't announced who is in isolation because of test results or which additional seven players are under quarantine because contact tracing determined they could have been exposed to the illness. Sat Mar 27 2021 | 17:54 | Nationals send projected starting 3B Kieboom to minors |
Carter Kieboom, a first-round draft pick and the expected starting third baseman for the Washington Nationals, was sent to the minor leagues on Saturday. Drafted in 2016, Kieboom has struggled at the plate in limited opportunities in the majors, batting .181 in 44 games over two seasons with Washington. Kieboom and Starlin Castro had been getting time at third in preseason camp. Also optioned to Triple-A Rochester were INF Luis Garcia, LHP Sam Clay, RHP Kyle McGowin and OF Yadiel HernĂĄndez. Surprising additions to the teamâs major league roster were INF Jordy Mercer and INF/OF HernĂĄn PĂ©rez. Mercer has a split contract: $1,000,000 while heâs in the majors and $150,000 in the minors, plus $50,000 each for 100, 150, 200, and 250 plate appearances, and $100,000 each for 300 and 400 plate appearances. Re-assigned to minor league camp were RHP Aaron Barrett, RHP Paolo Espino, RHP Javy Guerra, RHP Todd Peterson, C Welington Castillo, C Brandon Snyder, C Blake Swihart, INF AdrĂan Sanchez, OF Gerardo Parra and OF Carlos Tocci. The Nationals also released Yasmany TomĂĄs and T.J. McFarland from their minor league contracts and first baseman Jake Noll was designated for assignment to clear space on the 40-man roster. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports |
Tue Dec 15 2020 | 16:08 | Nats GM Rizzo: No 'serious conversation' about Kris Bryant |
WASHINGTON (AP) â Washington Nationals GM Mike Rizzoâs top offseason priority is adding a middle-of-the-order hitter, likely a corner outfielder or first baseman â and by the sound of things, he wonât do that by trading for a certain past NL MVP currently with the Chicago Cubs. Rizzo laid to rest any such speculation pretty plainly during a video conference call with reporters Tuesday. âWe havenât had a serious conversation about Kris Bryant in probably two years. He was not a big guy on our radar, last year or this year,â Rizzo said when asked about the three-time All-Star. âHeâs a great player, but at this point in time, with where weâre at and what we have in our farm system, and where weâre going, we think we can allocate our dollars and prospect capital in a better way.â Well, then. Both Rizzo and manager Dave Martinez spoke with the media for the first time since September â when Washington wrapped up the pandemic-truncated season at 26-34 and tied for last in the NL East, a year... Mon Sep 28 2020 | 12:08 | Champs to chumps: Age, injuries drop 2020 Nats to last place |
WASHINGTON (AP) â Donât tell Max Scherzer this year didnât count. Yes, there were fewer than half as many games as normal. Sure, there were rules changes. All Scherzer knows is there was a Major League Baseball season played in 2020, his Washington Nationals were coming off a World Series championship, and they ended up tied for last in the NL East with a record of 26-34. âWe werenât able to replicate the success we had last year into this year. Itâs just the way it goes. Everybody has a hand in it. Everybody needs to reflect upon what they did -- and didnât -- do well and try to make those adjustments going into next year. Thatâs just life in the big leagues. When you donât win, thereâs going to be a lot of attention to why you didnât win. Youâre always going to have that pressure to perform,â the three-time Cy Young Award winner said. âIâm sure thereâs people that are going to look at this and say, âHey, itâs only 60 games.. ...â But thatâs not my mentality,â Scherzer continued. âI came... Sat Sep 26 2020 | 10:05 | Nationals, manager Martinez agree to multiyear extension |
WASHINGTON (AP) â Manager Dave Martinez and the Washington Nationals agreed to a multiyear contract extension that the team announced Saturday. Martinez led the Nationals to the franchiseâs first World Series championship in 2019, his second season as the teamâs skipper. When he initially was hired, Martinez signed a three-year deal with a club option for 2021 that had not yet been picked up by the Nationals. âI canât say enough about Daveyâs leadership qualities and the poise he shows under pressure,â said Nationals president and general manager Mike Rizzo, who recently was given a three-year extension by the club. âThe players, coaches and staff have the utmost respect for him as a manager and a person. There is no one else our team would rather have at the helm.â After a title defense slowed by injuries and inconsistency during a 60-game season delayed and shortened by the coronavirus pandemic, Washington entered Saturday â Martinezâs 56th birthday â with a 23-34 record and in last place... Thu Sep 24 2020 | 12:24 | Champs done: Time to look toward 2021 for eliminated Nats |
WASHINGTON (AP) â When Yan Gomes was asked about the 2019 World Series champion Washington Nationals essentially playing out the string over the last four games of this season, the catcher was put off by the premise. âI donât think weâre technically out of it yet,â Gomes said. Technically, at that moment, he was right. About four hours later, once Wednesday had turned into Thursday and a game involving other teams ended the wrong way for Washingtonâs tiny remaining hopes, the Nationals were officially done. For the second straight season, manager Dave Martinezâs club got off to a 19-31 start. This time, there were not enough games to dig out of that hole. A year after winning the franchiseâs first championship thanks to a historic turnaround, the Nationals woke up Thursday in last place in the NL East with a 23-33 record and no mathematical chance of returning to the playoffs in a pandemic-shortened 2020. That extends a trend: No team has won the World Series in consecutive years since... [ More] |
