The 32-year-old went 8-for-55 (.145 average) in 25 games with the Rays, and while he's landed on another club's 40-man roster, it's uncertain whether the Rangers have any major-league plans for Wilson. If nothing else, he provides the team with an insurance policy behind Robinson Chirinos and Tomas Telis.

The Rays recalled Wilson from Triple-A Durham on Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Wilson was called up to take the roster spot of David DeJesus who was traded to the Angels on Tuesday. The Rays already had three players capable of playing catcher on the roster, but it appears they wanted even more depth at the position. Wilson's playing time figures to be minimal.

Wilson was DFA'd last week after his production tailed off over the last month. In 24 games for the Rays this season, Wilson hit just .145 with four RBI, 20 strikeouts and no extra-base hits. He'll look to get back on track at Triple-A in hopes of returning to the big league club at some point this season.

Wilson was designated for assignment by the Rays Thursday.

Wilson's stats had been trending downward since mid-May, but it's still a surprise to see the Rays potentially cut him loose and go on without a backup catcher. A corresponding acquisition or call-up behind the plate is likely in the works for Tampa. In 24 games, Wilson didn't register a single extra-base hit and is presently hitting .145.

Wilson has gotten the start at catcher in four of the Rays' last eight games over the struggling Rene Rivera.

Wilson isn't exactly lighting the world on fire with his bat, but his .167/.242/.167 slash line has at least been decent compared to Rivera's .136/.176/.210 line. Rivera possesses the far higher ceiling considering his .751 OPS last season, but he might miss more time if the problems continue.

Wilson has been added to the Rays' 40-man roster, Mark Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Wilson is currently the fourth catcher on the Rays' depth chart, and while probably will begin the season in the minors, he could be one of the top candidates for a recall should an injury occur to one of the other backstops.
