Burnett won Monday against the Nationals as he pitched seven innings and allowed one run, three hits and one walk to go along with a season-high 12 strikeouts.
Burnett has really struggled of late as he entered Monday having allowed at least five earned runs in four of his last seven starts. Although he was spectacular Monday, starts like this are the exception instead of the norm at this stage of his career.
Wed Aug 20 201406:01Burnett said he will probably retire after this season
Burnett said he will probably retire after this season, CSN Philly reports.
Burnett was asked about his plan for next season after another poor start Tuesday. His response could be the result of frustration with his performance, though Burnett did consider retirement prior to this season. He holds a player option for next season that will be worth $10 to $12.75 million depending on the number of starts he makes this season. That would be a lot of money to walk away from.

Burnett fell to 6-14 on Tuesday, giving up five earned runs on six hits while walking four and striking out nine over 7.2 innings in a loss to the Mariners.
The veteran continues to be all over the place for the last-place Phillies, pairing above-average strikeout numbers with contrastingly unimpressive walk totals. Burnett is now winless in his last seven starts (0-6) and owns a continually rising 4.42 ERA to go with his 1.41 WHIP (both of which are slightly worse than his career marks of 4.01 and 1.32) and 76:145 BB:K ratio. He's slated for a tough matchup against the first-place Nationals in his next start Monday.

Burnett lost his league-worst 13th game of the season Wednesday, giving up four runs on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts versus the Angels.
Burnett was discouraged after pitching well through five innings only to fall apart in the sixth, allowing three runs on three hits and a walk. The right-hander is trending in the wrong direction this season with ERA's of 4.10 in June, 4.89 in July and 6.59 so far in August. Burnett will try to get things straightened out Tuesday at home versus the Mariners.

Burnett labored through six innings Friday night, surrendering five earned runs on 11 hits and two walks while collecting eight strikeouts in a 5-4 loss to the Mets.
To say Burnett does not seem to be enjoying himself on the mound in recent weeks would be an understatement. Over his last five starts, the veteran hurler has gone 0-4 while struggling to a 6.66 ERA and 1.83 WHIP across 25.2 innings. Burnett will be in search of a rebound effort Wednesday versus the Angels.

Burnett pitched 1.2 innings while allowing five runs- one earned- before being ejected Saturday against the Nationals.
Burnett motioned and yelled towards the umpire after a ball call in the second inning, when the Nationals scored four runs. Burnett's loss was his third straight.
Thu Jul 31 201411:30Report: Phillies, Royals discussing Burnett
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports the Phillies and Royals are discussing an A.J. Burnett trade.
"No indication that [a] deal is close," he adds. It remains to be seen if Kansas City is amenable to assuming Burnett's player option for 2015, which could pay him as much as $14.25 million if he makes 32 starts. ESPN's Jayson Stark reported earlier this week that the Phillies are telling interested clubs they expect Burnett to retire, and Burnett (4.15 ERA) has echoed that sentiment to teammates. If the Royals expect to remain in contention, this is the type of move that must be consummated.

Tue Jul 29 201418:32A.J. Burnett-to-Pirates talks 'all but dead'
ESPN's Jayson Stark reports that trade talks between the Phillies and Pirates regarding A.J. Burnett are "all but dead."
The stumbling block is Burnett's player option for 2015, which could pay him as much as $14.25 million if he makes 32 starts. Stark says that the Phillies are telling teams they expect Burnett to retire, and Burnett has told his teammates the same thing. However, the Pirates don't want him at $14.25 million next year and aren't willing to take the chance if he changes his mind. After all, Burnett waffled back-and-forth between continuing his career or retiring last winter before ultimately deciding on the former.

Mon Jul 28 201422:34A.J. Burnett gives up seven runs in loss
A.J. Burnett was tagged for seven runs in five innings by the Mets in Monday's loss.
It's the sixth time this year that Burnett has allowed at least six runs, most in the majors (Clay Buchholz and Kyle Gibson have done it five times apiece). As many awful outings as he's had, it's sort of impressive that his ERA is still a respectable 4.15. Still, there won't be much demand for his services in trade talks this week.

Thu Jul 24 201420:11Pirates' interest in Burnett 'mild at best'
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Pirates' interest in A.J. Burnett is "mild at best."
He adds that their interest "might fall further" if Burnett intends to pick up his 2015 player option, which would be worth $12.75 million if he makes 32 starts this season. Burnett, of course, pitched for the Pirates from 2012-13 and they wanted to re-sign him over the winter but were outbid by the Phillies. Heyman also says that the Orioles' interest in Burnett "doesn't seem keen, either." The righty holds a good-but-not-great 3.86 ERA in 2014 and it appears his market might be drying up.

Wed Jul 23 201423:21Burnett blanks Giants, but takes no-decision
A.J. Burnett had one of his best starts of the season on a rain-soaked night against the Giants, tossing eight shutout innings in a no-decision.
With the two clubs short on relievers due to Tuesday's 14-inning affair, Burnett sat through a rain delay and pitched through eight innings on 130 pitches. He allowed four hits, walked four, and struck out six. Depending on what the Phillies do over the next few days, it may have been his last start in red pinstripes. If he's still around on Monday, he'll open a road series in New York against the Mets, sporting a 3.86 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and 119/62 K/BB ratio.

Tue Jul 22 201412:38Report: Burnett would prefer trade to Pirates
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Phillies right-hander A.J. Burnett would prefer to be dealt to the Pirates and that Pittsburgh players are lobbying for his return.
Burnett made a bit of an awkward exit from Pittsburgh when he signed with the Phillies during the offseason, but it's water under the bridge at this point. However, one possible hangup in a deal is his player option for 2015. He's currently at 21 starts this season, but his 2015 salary would rise to $8.5 million at 24 starts, $10 million at 27, $11.75 million at 30 and a maximum of $12.75 million if he makes it to 32 starts.

Similar to teammate Cliff Lee, Burnett has a 20-team no-trade list. The Pirates and Orioles are two of the teams who have been scouting Burnett recently and the trade list won't be an issue.

Sun Jul 20 201415:00Pirates scouting former Buc A.J. Burnett
Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the Pirates had a scout at A.J. Burnett's last start on Friday in Atlanta.
Gelb notes that it wasn't the scout's normal assignment, as he was clearly there to see Burnett. Jon Morosi of FOX Sports reported Saturday that the Phillies and Orioles have had preliminary discussions on a trade involving Burnett, but Gelb thinks the Pirates might wind up being a better fit. Burnett, of course, pitched for the Pirates from 2012-13.

Jon Morosi of FOX Sports reports that the Phillies and Orioles have had preliminary discussions on a trade involving A.J. Burnett.
Before he signed with the Phillies, the Orioles expressed interest in the veteran right-hander. Being that it's his hometown team, it's reasonable to believe that the O's would be a nice fit. Stay tuned.

Fri Jul 18 201423:31Burnett gives up six runs in loss
A.J. Burnett surrendered six runs in five innings of work in a loss to the Braves on Friday.
Not the best night for his trade value. Burnett gave up four runs in the second inning and two more in the fifth to put himself in line for the loss. He struck out five and walked one en route to his ninth loss of the season. The veteran right-hander now owns a 4.08 ERA and 113/58 K/BB ratio over 136 2/3 innings this season. He'll only have another couple of starts before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, with a date against the Giants in San Francisco up next.

The veteran right-hander has seven straight quality starts to his credit and will complete the first half with a 3.83 ERA and 108/57 K/BB ratio over 131 2/3 innings of work. With the Phillies in an absolute tailspin of late, Burnett's name has surfaced in trade whispers. His time with the Phillies may be short, but he'll probably still be around to face the Nationals on Friday.

Tue Jul 1 201423:30Burnett fans 10 in a no-decision vs. Marlins
A.J. Burnett got a no-decision, allowing four runs (three earned) over six innings in Tuesday's loss to the Marlins.
Burnett has struggled with his control at times this season and Tuesday was one of those times. The right-hander walked four for the seventh time in 18 starts this season. Overall, he allowed six hits and struck out 10, his second double-digit strikeout performance of the season. Burnett will take his 3.92 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, and 95/51 K/BB ratio into his next start against the Pirates on the road.

Tue Jul 1 201413:26Burnett likely to be dealt; Pirates best fit?
Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish hears from a source with knowledge of the situation that the Pirates would be the "single best fit" for A.J. Burnett and that a trade involving the veteran right-hander is likely before July 31.
This comes on the heels of a report from John Perrotto of USA Today, who mentioned that the Pirates have Burnett and Brandon McCarthy of the Diamondbacks on their radar as they consider possible rotation upgrades. Of course, Burnett had a 3.41 ERA from 2012-2013 with the Pirates before signing with the Phillies this past offseason. The 37-year-old has the ability to reject trades to 21 teams, but he reportedly would be open to a return to Pittsburgh.
