Sat Jan 11 201402:43Thornton scores one point in win over Magic
Marcus Thornton scored one point with three rebounds in 18 minutes on Friday against the Magic.
We might have gotten ahead of ourselves advising a pickup since his role is clearly tenuous at best and there have been a number of chemistry and performance issues dogging him this season. Owners can feel free to drop him for a hot free agent.

Thu Jan 9 201418:27Marcus Thornton to continue starting at SG
Kings coach Mike Malone said that Marcus Thornton will continue to start at SG with Ben McLemore coming off the bench.
Malone said he'll keep McLemore off the bench for the "foreseeable future," noting that McLemore wasn't getting many touches with the starting unit anyway. Thornton's scoring ability gives him intriguing upside and he's worth picking up if you're in need of points and 3-pointers.

Wed Jan 8 201403:33Marcus Thornton quiet in start for Kings
Marcus Thornton replaced Ben McLemore as the starting shooting guard on Tuesday, but hit just 1-of-5 shots for three points, eight rebounds, a steal, a block and a 3-pointer.
McLemore had just two points and two assists off the bench in 18 minutes, while Thornton played 22 minutes tonight. Thornton has a chance to make some real noise if he can stick in the starting five, making him a prospective add in fantasy leagues with the hope he can return to being a volume scorer for the Kings.

Tue Jan 7 201422:07Marcus Thornton starting, McLemore to bench
Marcus Thornton will start at shooting guard against the Blazers on Tuesday.
Ben McLemore looks to be demoted after his 2-of-13 shooting in his last two games. Meanwhile, Thornton has scored more than 11 points in two of his last three games, averaging, 22.0 minutes per game. Fantasy owners shouldn't make any drastic moves because of the lineup switch and we'll let you know how they do tonight.

Tue Dec 31 201322:03Marcus Thornton scores 15 points in 20 mins.
Marcus Thornton scored 15 points in his 20 minutes of action on Tuesday, adding three rebounds, two assists, one steal and three 3-pointers.
He does have three games of 15 points or more over his last five, but playing just 23.8 minutes per game isn't a ringing endorsement from coach Mike Malone. Thornton's ceiling isn't really anything more than a timeshare with Ben McLemore, so he's not worth owning in most leagues.

Tue Dec 24 201303:35Thornton scores 19 points on Monday
Marcus Thornton scored 19 points on Monday, hitting 5-of-13 shots (2-of-6 from deep, 7-of-7 from the line) with five rebounds and one assist in 30 minutes.
Thornton only got this much time because Ben McLemore (three points, 23 minutes, four fouls) was struggling and beyond that he isn't guaranteed a rotation spot on any given night. Unless you're in a 30-team league there's not enough to hold onto there, and as for McLemore just keep considering him a stash for the second half of the season.

Sat Dec 21 201321:54Marcus Thornton scores 15 off the bench
Marcus Thornton scored 15 points off the bench on Saturday to go with three boards, one steal and three 3-pointers on 6-of-10 shooting.
He scored just two points on Friday and did not play in his two games prior to that one. Thornton has been out of the rotation for the most part and the team seems to have handed over the shooting guard minutes to Ben McLemore. He can left on the wire in almost any league.

Mon Dec 16 201314:44Marcus Thornton barely plays on Sunday
Marcus Thornton didn't play in the first half of Sunday's game, and he finished with just two points in seven minutes of action.
The result of Thornton's activity was that Jimmer Fredette didn't play in the second half, and it seems as though neither guy is a big part of Mike Malone's plans going forward. Thornton's instant-offense abilities give him nice fantasy upside, but it would probably take a trade for him to get substantial playing time, and his $8.6 million salary for 2014-15 is prohibitively expensive (third-highest on the Kings behind DeMarcus Cousins and Rudy Gay, assuming Gay accepts his player option).

Wed Dec 4 201300:59Marcus Thornton scores five in loss to OKC
Marcus Thornton played 20 minutes and hit 2-of-8 shots and a 3-pointer for five points, five rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block in Tuesday's loss.
Yes, he's out of the doghouse and back in the rotation, but it also looks like he's going to be terribly inconsistent for the Kings. To that point, in his last three games Thornton has scored 4, 21 and 5 points. If you can figure out on which night he's going to bust loose, put him in your lineup and then go play the lottery.

Sun Dec 1 201321:25Marcus Thornton hits five 3s, scores 21 pts
Marcus Thornton, who recently rejoined the Kings' rotation, finished Sunday's loss with 21 points on 6-of-11 FGs and 4-of-5 FTs off the bench.
He knocked down 5-of-8 three-pointers in just under 30 minutes of action, his highest playing time since falling out of the rotation in mid-November. Thornton is explosive enough to have sporadic value in a bench role, but it will likely take a trade for him to be steady enough for use in 12-team leagues. His hot hand limited starting SG Ben McLemore to just four points in 18 minutes.

Sat Nov 30 201309:17Marcus Thornton back in rotation
Marcus Thornton came off the bench Friday, logging his first minutes since November 17th.
Thornton hadn't played in the nearly two weeks since he was benched in favor of rookie Ben McLemore. Coach Mike Malone said of Thornton, "The way he's been playing and shooting the ball in practice gave him an opportunity to have a matchup between him and some bigger guards." Malone is waiting to see if Thornton or Jimmer Fredette can earn more playing time behind McLemore. Still, Thornton contributed a mere four points and three rebounds in over 17 minutes of action. Do not even consider adding him to your fantasy team at this point.

Thu Nov 21 201302:32Marcus Thornton gets another DNP
Marcus Thornton logged his second consecutive DNP-CD (coach's decision) on Wednesday.
The Kings have gone with Ben McLemore in the starting lineup and haven't even given Thornton a chance to show what he can do. The two players have barely been on the court together at all this season, so the outlook is bleak for Thornton right now.

Wed Nov 20 201301:56Marcus Thornton a DNP-CD Tuesday
Marcus Thornton got a DNP-CD (coach's decision) on Tuesday, failing to leave the bench as the Kings beat the Suns in a thriller.
Thornton has been hit or miss all season and outside of a 24-point explosion last Wednesday, hasn't even been worth putting into lineups much. He may have pouted his way out of the rotation, as Jimmer Fredette (14 minutes, 3 points) and Ben McLemore (34 minutes) got all of his time tonight. It's a good bet that Thornton will emerge again at some point in the future, but for now, it looks like Mike Malone has grown tired of the pouting from the high-volume shooter. He needs to be taken out of fantasy lineups and can actually be dropped for a hot free agent. Just be aware that he will probably bounce back at some point this season, but when is anyone's guess.

Sat Nov 16 201304:57Thornton goes cold after big night
Marcus Thornton couldn't back up his big outing on Wednesday, hitting just 1-of-6 shots for five points, four rebounds and two assists in 23 minutes off the bench on Friday.
Thornton stopped pressing on Wednesday and he went right back to pressing tonight, highlighting why he's going to be a tough guy to rely on in fantasy leagues. Feel free to turn him in for a hot free agent in standard leagues.

Thu Nov 14 201312:11Marcus Thornton to come off bench?
Marcus Thornton received praise for his play coming off the bench from coach Mike Malone.
Malone shook up his lineup after a 1-5 start by benching Thornton and Patrick Patterson for Ben McLemore and Jason Thompson and liked what he saw. Malone remarked, "After the game, I told Marcus that maybe I should've put him on the bench sooner with that performance." It's unclear if these lineup changes will stick, but Thornton could thrive as part of the second unit as he'd be facing opposing teams' second unit defenders and is worth a speculative pickup if he's available.

Thu Nov 14 201302:43Marcus Thornton has 24 points after demotion
Marcus Thornton took his frustration with being benched for rookie Ben McLemore out on the Nets on Wednesday, hitting 10-of-19 shots and four 3-pointers for a season-high 24 points in 34 minutes.
The points, 3-pointers and field goals were all season highs and this was the first time he's topped 20 points, as well. He might actually be a better player off the bench, where he can square off against the opposition's second unit, making him worth a close look if he was recently dropped in your league. And based on that fact that he had really been struggling prior to this one, he might still be sitting out there.

Sun Nov 10 201301:35Marcus Thornton quiet in loss to Blazers
Marcus Thornton hit just 2-of-9 shots for four points in Saturday's loss to the Blazers.
Coach Mike Malone said changes may be coming to the starting unit after a 1-5 start and Jimmer Fredette was aggressive late in this game and Ben McLemore had 13 points and three 3-pointers off the bench. Keep an eye out for news on lineup changes for the Kings in the coming days, and think about stashing McLemore in case the rookie gets thrown into the starting five.

Sat Nov 9 201308:33Thornton goes cold in loss to the Blazers
Marcus Thornton couldn't find the range as he hit just 2-of-11 shots in Friday's loss to the Blazers, finishing with just five points, six rebounds, two steals and one trey in fat 40 minutes.
After all the local hype about Ben McLemore the rookie played just seven minutes tonight, and one has to wonder if Thornton is being given enough rope to hang himself with right now. In the preseason a bunch of Sacto beat writers thought that Buckets had been either outplayed or matched by Jimmer Fredette, and beyond that there have been more questionable moments for Thornton than positive, clarifying moments. With McLemore breathing down his neck, a shorter leash for MT23 is probably best.

Wed Nov 6 201301:56Marcus Thornton scores 15 in loss to Hawks
Marcus Thornton hit 5-of-10 shots for 15 points, a season-high three steals and three 3-pointers in 25 minutes of Tuesday's loss.
He's now had two good games and two duds, and that will likely be his mantra going forward. But if you need a shooting guard who can hit threes and get hot in a flash, Thornton is probably worth sticking with through both the good and the bad.

Sun Nov 3 201301:54Marcus Thornon quiet in blowout loss
Marcus Thornton started at shooting guard but hit just 3-of-9 shots and one 3-pointer for seven points in Saturday's bad loss to the Warriors.
Thornton scored 17 with three 3-pointers on Friday, but never got it going tonight. Jimmer Fredette even made his first appearance of the season, as the Kings cleared their bench fairly early in the second half. Look for Thornton to bounce back on Tuesday against the Hawks.
