Fri Jan 4 201319:03Yankees also interested in Lance Berkman
According to Ken Davidoff of the New York Post, the Yankees are one of several teams interested in signing Lance Berkman.
Davidoff notes that it's unclear whether Berkman would consider a reunion with the Bombers, especially due to the interest from his hometown Astros and Rangers. With Mark Teixeira entrenched at first base, and several veterans who could use days of rest at the DH position, it's difficult to see a fit between the two parties.

Fri Jan 4 201309:20Rays, Orioles showing interest in Berkman
Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that, in addition to the Rangers, the Rays and Orioles have "reached out" to Lance Berkman.
Berkman said he received two offers before Christmas and hopes to revisit them, though he wouldn't reveal which teams the offers came from. Texas, Tampa and Baltimore all make sense as potential landing spots, though it's not clear at this point which clubs are going after Berkman the hardest. "Big Puma" said he's "still a little bit in limbo" on whether to play in 2013, but it sure sounds like he will if he gets an adequate offer.

Wed Jan 2 201320:36Report: Lance Berkman talking to the Rangers
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that free agent Lance Berkman has engaged in talks with the Rangers.
Berkman is known to be seriously considering retirement, but the allure of playing for a contender -- in his home state, nonetheless -- might be enough to sway him. The Astros were also interested in Berkman at one point this winter, but they have a crowded depth chart at first base and designated hitter. And they also have no hope of competing in the American League West in 2013.

Tue Jan 1 201322:33Red Sox not considering Lance Berkman
Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald hears that the Red Sox "are not believed to still be considering" Lance Berkman.
Lauber notes that Boston "expressed a degree of interest" in Berkman earlier in the offseason, but it appears that ship has sailed even with the Mike Napoli deal hanging in the balance. Berkman has received a bit of interest on the open market, but he seems likelier to retire at this point.

Mon Dec 17 201213:52Astros still open to signing Lance Berkman
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Astros remain open to bringing back Lance Berkman even after the signing of Carlos Pena.
The problem is that Berkman would have to accept a very modest deal, and he wouldn't be guaranteed everyday playing time. Rosenthal says that other teams are interested in Berkman, as well. At this point, though, it seems likelier that the 36-year-old will retire and take a voluntary assistant coach at Rice, his alma mater.

Wed Dec 12 201214:01Berkman at top of Astros' DH search
ESPN's Jerry Crasnick hears that Lance Berkman remains at the top of the list in the Astros' search for a designated hitter.
Crasnick hears that the Astros aren't interested in other aging DH-types like Hideki Matsui, Johnny Damon, Travis Hafner or Jason Giambi, so they will likely try to add a low-profile name if things with Berkman don't work out. No surprise, money is the biggest hurdle to a potential reunion.

Mon Nov 19 201218:37Berkman in contact with four different teams
Lance Berkman said Monday that he's contacted by the Red Sox, Rays, Phillies and Astros.
There appears to be ample interest, but Berkman isn't completely certain that he wants to continue his playing career. The 36-year-old recently accepted a volunteer baseball coaching position on the staff at Rice University. "I'm waiting to be blown away by an offer," he told the Houston Chronicle. "If I'm not, I'll be out (at Rice)."

Sun Nov 18 201210:35Berkman to be assistant coach at Rice
Lance Berkman has joined Rice University baseball coach Wayne Graham's staff as a volunteer assistant.
Berkman will work as a volunteer with the team in the spring and has an open invitation to stay with the staff longer than that. By giving him a "volunteer assistant" tag, Rice will allow Berkman to continue his playing career if he so chooses. "Having flexibility if I want to play another year or two was important," Berkman said. "If I decide to hang it up, I have something to step into immediately."

Fri Nov 16 201215:33Berkman interested in being Astros' DH
Lance Berkman met with Astros owner Jim Crane last week, and Crane said the 36-year-old "expressed some interest in maybe working a deal out."
A lot depends on how Berkman's surgically-repaired knee responds and how interested contending teams might be, but it appears Berkman going back to Houston could be a fit. Crane did note that the decision would ultimately be up to general manager Jeff Luhnow and manager Bo Porter. "I think he has an interest," Crane said. "All of that will depend on his knee and probably the price, if he get any other offers or what. If all that works out, and there are a lot of ifs there, possibly he could do some DHing (designated hitter) for us."

Fri Nov 2 201220:57Astros could pursue Lance Berkman
Astros GM Jeff Lunhow said Friday that he'll reach out to free agent Lance Berkman to gauge his interest on a potential return to Houston.
After being limited to just 32 games this season due to a wide variety of ailments, Berkman has hinted that he'll retire. However, with the Astros moving to the American League, he could be a potential fit at DH should he decide to give it one more go.

Fri Oct 26 201217:58Astros could have interest in Berkman
The Houston Chronicle suggests that the Astros could pursue Lance Berkman this offseason.
With the Astros moving to the American League, Berkman could be a potential fit as their designated hitter if he decides not retire. However, it remains doubtful that he returns next season. After being limited to 32 games due to injuries, Berkman is unlikely to be part of any team's "rebuilding" plans.

Thu Oct 25 201212:49Mo: Berkman unlikely to return to Cardinals
Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak confirmed Thursday that Lance Berkman is unlikely to return.
"It's hard to imagine finding a fit for him here," Mozeliak told reporters in a morning chat at Busch Stadium. Allen Craig has taken over at first base for the Cardinals and seems likely to man that position for the club for the next several seasons. Berkman, who turns 37 years old in February, is considering retirement.

Sun Oct 21 201217:56Berkman not likely to return for postseason
Lance Berkman (knee) is not expected to be available if the Cardinals make it to the World Series.
Berkman said his knee is rehabbing well but that he doesn't think he has enough time to be added to postseason roster. The 36-year-old appeared in just 32 games due to injuries, and will wait until February before making a decision about whether or not to retire.

Tue Oct 16 201219:53Lance Berkman won't decide future until Feb.
Lance Berkman said he will wait until February before making a decision about whether or not to retire.
Berkman will listen to offers up until then, but he'll be picky regarding potential suitors and salary. "If it's Seattle for $500,000, then no," he said. The 36-year-old appeared in just 32 games this season due to injuries and has previously hinted toward retirement, but it's clearly not a done deal.

Tue Oct 16 201215:26Berkman (knee) thinks he could play in WS
Lance Berkman (knee) thinks there's a real chance he could be ready to play if the Cardinals make the World Series.
Berkman was left off the the Cardinals' playoff roster due to his surgically-repaired right knee, but he's currently doing some light running and feels much better than he did two weeks ago. It's unlikely he would be anything more than a bench bat. The 36-year-old appeared in just 32 games this season and is leaning toward retirement after the season.

Thu Oct 4 201208:43Berkman (knee) grounds out in Cards' finale
Lance Berkman (knee) hit into a weak groundout in the Cardinals' season finale on Wednesday night.
Berkman, who might have been taking his final major league at-bat, first got a rousing standing ovation from the sold out Busch Stadium crowd. He appeared in only 32 games this year due to knee troubles, batting .259/.381/.444 with two homers and seven RBI. The 36-year-old is thought to be leaning toward retirement.

Tue Oct 2 201212:32Berkman (knee) unlikely to play this week
Lance Berkman (knee) is unlikely to play this week.
Berkman already said as much over the weekend, but it's even more doubtful after his surgically-repaired knee didn't respond well to a recent batting practice session. The 36-year-old is mulling retirement, so it's possible he has played his final game in the big leagues.

Mon Oct 1 201210:47Berkman (knee) unlikely to return this year
Lance Berkman (knee) acknowledged this weekend that he is unlikely to return this weekend.
Berkman has been taking regular batting practice but still hasn't tried to run at full speed. "It's probably a long shot that I will be playing in the playoffs," the veteran slugger told MLB.com. "Even if I were to get back out there physically, you still have the issue of not being game-ready. I don't think it would be fair to the team to be added to the playoff roster and take somebody's spot that could actually help us win."
