BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox got All-Star slugger Kyle Schwarber from the Washington Nationals for a minor league pitcher late Thursday night. The trade was announced after the AL East-leading Red Sox lost to Toronto 13-1 at Fenway Park. Boston is 1 1/2 games ahead of Tampa Bay. The big league trade deadline is 4 p.m. Friday. Earlier Thursday, the Nationals sent closer Brad Hand to Toronto. Schwarber had just finished a historic homer barrage when he strained his right hamstring on July 2. The left-handed hitter has been on the injured list since then, and was unable to play after earning his first All-Star selection. The 28-year-old outfielder was off to a smashing start in his first season with Washington, hitting 25 home runs with 53 RBIs in 72 games. Schwarber tied a major league record by hitting 12 home runs in a 10-game span from June 19-29. He also set a record for a leadoff hitter for homers in a month, connecting 15 times to start games in June. Schwarber joined the Nationals... [ More] |

Washington Nationals outfielder Kyle Schwarber (hamstring) is drawing trade interest, despite being on the injured list, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network. Schwarber has been on the injured list since July 3 with a right hamstring strain but that hasn't stopped teams from inquiring about him. He was on fire at the plate before getting injured and has a rock-solid .253/.340/.570 batting line to go along with 25 home runs, 53 RBI, and 42 runs scored across 265 at-bats this season. Sat Jul 3 2021 | 18:07 | Nats' hot-hitting Schwarber out with hamstring strain |
WASHINGTON (AP) — Kyle Schwarber limped into the Washington Nationals' dugout on Saturday with a heavy wrap poking out of the right side of his shorts. Schwarber was in shower shoes and trying to be upbeat when meeting with reporters after being placed on the 10-day injured list because of a right hamstring strain. There is no timetable for his return. “It’s not the best, but not the worst,” Schwarber said. “Just got to take it for what it is.” He was among the hottest hitters in the majors, bashing 16 home runs in June, seven of them leading off games. All were critical for the Nationals, who went 19-9 in the month to turn their season around. Schwarber said he does not need a procedure to repair damage to his hamstring. Instead, he will use compression treatment to reduce swelling. Rest and strengthening exercises will follow. He has not had a hamstring injury previously. Schwarber tore two ligaments in his left knee in 2016. But a furious recovery pace allowed him to rejoin the Chicago... [ More] |

A look at what's happening around the majors today: HOT, THEN HURT After a historic June homer binge, Kyle Schwarber’s July got off to a less promising start. The Washington Nationals slugger exited Friday night’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers because of an injured right hamstring. Schwarber grimaced rounding first on a single, grabbed the hamstring and immediately left the field. Schwarber was set for an MRI. “When you see a guy grab his leg like that, you’ve got to get him out of the game,” manager Dave Martinez said. “You hope he can come out of it and be OK,” he said. Schwarber’s mashing from the leadoff spot revived the Nationals’ season in June. He became the third player in major league history to hit 16 homers in 18 games and was chosen NL Player of the Month.
