The Rays designated Ernesto Frieri for assignment, and they'll replace the reliever with an extra outfielder. Mahtook has one home run in four big-league plate appearances, but his .242/.292/.357 slash line for Triple-A Durham isn't particularly encouraging.

The 25-year-old Mahtook entered camp as a candidate for a short-end platoon or fourth outfielder role, but a 1-for-14 mark (seven strikeouts) in spring action has put an early end to his bid. Mahtook has gone just 1-for-12 with seven strikeouts so far this spring.
Mahtook, the Rays' No. 18 prospect according to MLB.com, came into spring training with the possibility to break camp as a platoon or fourth outfielder for the Rays heading into the regular season. However, after coming up with just one hit over a dozen at bats and posting a 7-to-0 K/BB ratio, it seems more-and-more likely that the 25 year old will begin his 2015 campaign with Triple-A Durham.
