Mahtook went 1-for-4 with the game-winning home run Sunday against the Mariners.

The 25-year-old has started four of the past six games for the Rays, but is still hitting just .118 with a pair of home runs on the season and holds little fantasy value at the moment.

Mahtook was recalled from Triple-A Durham on Tuesday.

The Rays designated Ernesto Frieri for assignment, and they'll replace the reliever with an extra outfielder. Mahtook has one home run in four big-league plate appearances, but his .242/.292/.357 slash line for Triple-A Durham isn't particularly encouraging.

Mahtook was optioned to Triple-A Durham on Thursday.

Mahtook's demotion to the minors comes as a result of the impending activation of Drew Smyly and James Loney off the disabled list. He's made four appearances with the Rays this season, going 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, but will head back to the minors and await his next opportunities to contribute for the club.

There isn't any obvious avenue to playing time for Mahtook, but with John Jaso on the DL, David DeJesus will be getting some starts there. This leaves just Brandon Guyer as a backup outfielder, so Mahtook's call-up will add depth.

Mahtook was recalled on April 9 and has appeared in four games for the Rays, notching one hit, a home run, in four at-bats. He'll head back down to Triple-A, where he hit .292/.362/.458 with 12 home runs and 68 RBI in 132 games last season.

Mahtook made his first career hit a home run in Wednesday's loss to the Jays.

He got the chance to take over for Kevin Kiermaier with the Jays getting routed, and Mahtook got to show off his power. Although Mahtook's minor-league numbers aren't impressive, he broke out to some degree in Triple-A last year, and could at least hep out in AL-only leagues if he gets more at-bats.

Mahtook has gone just 1-for-12 with seven strikeouts so far this spring.

Mahtook, the Rays' No. 18 prospect according to MLB.com, came into spring training with the possibility to break camp as a platoon or fourth outfielder for the Rays heading into the regular season. However, after coming up with just one hit over a dozen at bats and posting a 7-to-0 K/BB ratio, it seems more-and-more likely that the 25 year old will begin his 2015 campaign with Triple-A Durham.
