Sabathia opened the game with three no-hit innings before allowing a run apiece in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Opposing hitters are batting .187 against Sabathia the first time through the order this season but .293 thereafter. Sabathia has failed to author a quality start in eight of his last nine starts, a stretch in which he is 1-5 with a 6.62 ERA as his overall ERA has risen from 2.20 to 4.18. He is 6-9 in 20 starts.

LHP CC Sabathia will look to snap out of a nearly two-month slump Saturday afternoon, when he takes the mound for the Yankees in the middle game of a three-game series against the Cleveland Indians at Yankee Stadium. Sabathia didn't factor into the decision last Monday, when he gave up five runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out five over 5 2/3 innings as the Yankees edged the New York Mets, 6-5, in 10 innings. It was the seventh time in his last eight starts Sabathia has failed to author a quality start, a stretch in which he has gone 1-4 with a 6.85 ERA as his overall ERA has risen from 2.20 to 4.15 -- the highest it has been since April. Sabathia is 4-2 with a 3.55 ERA in 10 career starts against the Indians, with whom he spent the first seven-plus seasons of his career from 2001 through 2008.

LHP CC Sabathia recorded his first quality start and first victory since June 16 against the Twins. He had allowed at least four runs in six consecutive starts, which tied the longest such streak in his career (also July 3-Aug. 1, 2001). He moved into sole possession of seventh place on the club strikeout list with 1,262, surpassing Mel Stottlemyre (1,257). Mike Mussina (1,278) is sixth.

Sabathia is 19-7 with a 3.28 ERA in 35 starts against the Orioles, including 14-7 with a 3.61 ERA in 26 outings vs. Baltimore with the Yankees.

LHP CC Sabathia is 0-3 with a 7.94 ERA in his last five starts after allowing five runs (four earned) and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. He has allowed five home runs in his last five outings after allowing just two in his first 11 starts. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said those home runs are mistakes with his cut fastball.

LHP CC Sabathia (5-6) struck out a season-high nine Monday, but allowed five runs on eight hits over six innings in a loss to the White Sox. He is 0-2 with an 8.31 ERA in his past three starts. "It's frustrating," Sabathia said. "Stuff is good, stuff is there, I'm just not executing pitches when I need to."

LHP CC Sabathia was pushed back to Monday's start in Chicago. RHP Chad Green will start Sunday in San Diego and the Yankees made the move to protect Sabathia from possibly having to run the bases in a National League ballpark.

"I was a little concerned about that, but I think he understands," Girardi said of the discussion with Sabathia about not hitting.

LHP CC Sabathia threw a bullpen session Saturday and remains on track to start Tuesday against Texas. Sabathia twisted his right ankle covering home plate during Wednesday's win over Colorado and has been wearing a wrap on his ankle since.
