Rubby De La Rosa topped out at 100 mph in Sunday's Grapefruit League appearance against the Cardinals.
The Red Sox are being cautious with De La Rosa in his first season back from Tommy John surgery, but he could force his way into the majors at some point in 2013. "Three pitches for strikes, confidence on the mound, a lot of good things out of him," said manager John Farrell. "When you profile that out, he's a starter. Time will tell what role he settles into."

De La Rosa had Tommy John surgery in August of 2011, so the Red Sox want to be careful with his workload. The hard-throwing 23-year-old will likely begin the season with Triple-A Pawtucket, but he could contribute in Boston's rotation at some point this summer.

Very interesting. Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times writes that De La Rosa was believed to be claimed on waivers by the Blue Jays, so sending him to the minors would allow the Dodgers to include him as a player to be named later if the club agrees to the blockbuster deal with the Red Sox.

Rubby De La Rosa (elbow) is throwing "free and easy" on flat ground from 60 feet, according to MLB.com's Ken Gurnick.

Rubby De La Rosa lasted just four innings and gave up three earned runs in a loss to the Diamondbacks Sunday.
De La Rosa was forced to throw 104 pitches and walked four during his short time on the mound. The walks are starting to really become a concern as the rookie now has 31 in 60 2/3 innings on the season.
