Mon May 21 201210:50Garrett Jones doubles in loss
Garrett Jones doubled in Sunday's loss to the Tigers.
Jones has six doubles, four home runs and 25 strikeouts in 95 plate appearances this season, and is sporting a rough .231/.253/.429 batting line. He has some pop still, but the 31-year-old first baseman and outfielder is a fringe fantasy option in standard mixed leagues.

Sun Apr 15 201219:33Garrett Jones homers in win
Garrett Jones hit a solo home run in Sunday's win over the Giants.
Jones' first bomb of the season came against Ryan Vogelsong in the second inning. In a strict platoon with Casey McGehee at first base, Jones' NL-only league prospects aren't looking good for the time being.

Wed Mar 14 201216:59Garrett Jones reaches three times in win
Garrett Jones went 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI and a walk Wednesday in the Pirates' 11-5 win over the Orioles.
The current plan appears to be for Jones and Casey McGehee to platoon at first base, with Jones starting against all of the righties. He's been the definition of mediocre since his big debut with the Pirates in 2009, but he does have 20- to 25-homer power. NL-only leagues would still be smart to go in a different direction.

Wed Feb 15 201217:34Pirates, Jones have arbitration hearing
The Pirates engaged in an arbitration hearing on Wednesday afternoon with Garrett Jones.
Jones requested $2.5 million and was offered $2.25 million from the Pirates when arbitration numbers were exchanged last month. Despite the small difference between the figures, the two sides were unable to reach a compromise and will now wait for a decision from an independent arbitrator. Jones, 39, batted .243/.321/.433 with 16 home runs and 58 RBI last season and is expected to start at first base for the Bucs in 2012.

Thu Feb 9 201218:24Yanks want Bucs' Garrett Jones for Burnett
According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Yankees want Garrett Jones from the Pirates in return for A.J. Burnett.
The Bucs are said to like the idea of bringing Burnett aboard, but Olney says they won't trade Jones to make it happen and thus there is "no traction" for a deal at this time. Jones, 30, posted a .243/.321/.433 slash line with 16 home runs and 58 RBI last season and is expected to start at first base for Pittsburgh in 2012. The Yankees seem doubtful to find a legitimate suitor for Burnett.

Tue Jan 17 201223:27Garrett Jones requests $2.5M via arbitration
Garrett Jones requested $2.5 million and was offered $2.25 million from the Pirates when arbitration figures were exchanged Tuesday.
Jones, who is arbitration-eligible for the first time, batted .243/.321/.433 with 16 home runs, 58 RBI and a .753 OPS last season. With only a very small gap between the filings, we expect a deal will get done eventually.

Garrett Jones hit a two-run homer in Pittsburgh's win over the Reds on Friday.

Tue Aug 16 201123:10Garrett Jones sends Pirates to walk-off win
Garrett Jones provided the Pirates with a walk-off win Tuesday, launching a mammoth blast off the Cardinals' Arthur Rhodes in the 10th inning that landed in the Allegheny River.
He also singled on the night. Jones is swinging a hot bat in August, hitting .333 with four homers over 54 at-bats, so the Pirates haven't really suffered much from Derrek Lee's absence.

Tue Aug 9 201101:07Garrett Jones has big night in 5-0 win
Garrett Jones went 4-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and a stolen base in Pittsburgh's 5-0 win over the Giants on Monday.
The four-hit night was Jones' first of the season, though the multi-hit effort was his fourth in seven August starts after he hit just .183 in July. For the year, he's now hitting .249/.332/.451.

Tue Aug 2 201122:22Garrett Jones hits a pair out
Garrett Jones homered twice and drove in four runs in Tuesday's loss to the Cubs.
Jones batted a meager .183/.256/.352 in July but has picked up three hits in his first six August at-bats. Despite tonight's heroics, he still sports an ugly .236/.319/.428 line for the season and will be out of a starting job when Jose Tabata returns from the DL.

Fri Jul 22 201122:21Garrett Jones drives in a pair
Garrett Jones doubled and singled in two runs in Friday's loss to the Cardinals.
His two-RBI single was pretty lucky, as he got jammed but blooped one in front of left fielder Matt Holliday. The two base knocks are Jones' first two in a starting role since back on July 4. If the Pirates have their druthers, he won't be their right field after the trade deadline.

Wed Jul 20 201115:23Garrett Jones in 0-for-13 slump
Garrett Jones went hitless Wednesday and is 0-for-13 during the second half.
Jones was almost traded to the Angels for Jeff Mathis earlier this month and now there's talk that he might go to the A's in a Josh Willingham deal, so maybe he's a little distracted. His average is down to .234.

Mon Jul 11 201122:01Angels talked with Bucs about Garrett Jones
According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, the Angels were engaged in "serious talks" with the Pirates earlier this season about a trade that would have sent outfielder-first baseman Garrett Jones to Anaheim and catcher Jeff Mathis to Pittsburgh.
The discussions ultimately fell apart after Pirates' officials decided they couldn't part with Jones' power bat. However, the failed deal does shine a light on each team's area of need. The Pirates are currently relying on a tandem of Michael McKenry and Eric Fryer behind the plate while the Angels are on the market for a left-handed bat to complement rookie slugger Mark Trumbo.

Garrett Jones and Andrew McCutchen hit back-to-back solo homers in the eighth inning to lead the Pirates to a 5-3 win over the Nationals in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday.
Jones took Sean Burnett deep for his first home run off a left-handed pitcher since August 7 of last season. He finished the day 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. He's now hitting .319 since the start of June, pulling his batting average up to .255 for the year.

Thu Jun 16 201117:28Garrett Jones hits three-run homer in win
Garrett Jones hit a three-run homer Thursday as the Pirates beat the Astros 5-4 to extend their winning streak to four games.
The Pirates are now 35-33 on the season. Jones homered off Jordan Lyles in the first and was at the plate when the Pirates went ahead for good in the sixth, hitting a fly to center that resulted in an error for Michael Bourn and one run scoring. Jones, who has seen his role reduced as of late, is 10-for-25 with seven RBI this month. He'll probably get more playing time with the Pirates having the DH available in Cleveland this weekend.

Tue May 31 201121:34Garrett Jones in danger of losing spot
Garrett Jones could be in danger of losing his starting spot.
Jones has been in a terrible funk at the plate, batting .161 with a .266 OBP since May 3. "You want to get your lineup out that you feel can be the most effective," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "I think an effective bat from Garrett Jones would put our lineup in a much better place, but at the same time, there comes a point in time when you try to find a Plan B or another answer to spark some things for your offense as a whole." Matt Diaz and Xavier Paul would figure to get more playing time at the expense of Jones, though they haven't really swung the bat well, either.

Fri Apr 29 201123:58Garrett Jones homers in 3-0 win
Garrett Jones went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the Pirates' 3-0 win over the Rockies on Friday.
The bomb was his second in four games, and fifth of the year. After getting off to a very slow start this season, Jones has gotten on track of late, and should prove to be a worthy own in most deeper mixed leagues.

Wed Apr 20 201121:46Garrett Jones finally cools off
Garrett Jones saw his four-game hitting streak snapped in a shutout loss to the Marlins on Wednesday.
Jones entered the game seven for his last 12, and had reached base an impressive 12 times in Pittsburgh's past four games. He had been hitting just .172 with a .273 on-base percentage before his recent eruption, so he picked a good time to show the Pirates something. The Bucs will face righty Chris Volstad on Thursday, someone Jones is 0-for-5 lifetime against.
