Danny Farquhar blew his first save opportunity since becoming the Mariners' closer, giving up two runs against the Rays on Wednesday.
Farquhar closed out the Rays on Tuesday with ease but didn't record an out this time around, surrendering four hits and a walk. He'd been a perfect 5-for-5 with eight strikeouts in his previous five save opportunities before Wednesday. Despite the hiccup, he's been good enough in the role that the Mariners should keep coming back to him to secure victories going forward.

Sun Aug 4 201318:30New closer Farquhar earns 2nd save in 2 days
Danny Farquhar earned his second save in as many days as the Mariners bested the Orioles on Sunday.
And for the second consecutive day, Farquhar earned a save without allowing a base runner. It's been a fascinating ride for the native Floridian. On July 19, Farquhar's roster spot was in jeopardy with a 7.61 ERA. He's hurled seven consecutive scoreless appearances since, covering 10 2/3 innings. Tom Wilhelmsen was yanked from the closer's job Thursday, when he surrendered four runs without recording an out against Boston. Farquhar will continue to operate the ninth inning in Seattle until he fails. Despite a still-terrible 5.09 ERA, the right-hander owns a spectacular 53/14 K/BB rate over 35 1/3 frames. He needs to be owned in all formats.

Fri Aug 2 201311:20Farquhar credits Blanco for new approach
Danny Farquhar credits his new approach to a pep talk from 41-year-old catcher Henry Blanco.
"He was like, 'Man, with your stuff you need to start pounding hitters in," said Farquhar. "And I really took it to heart and started applying it. I think a lot of my success is due to Henry talking to me." The right-hander owned an embarrassing 7.61 ERA on July 19, but he's looked spectacular over his last five relief appearances, tossing 9 1/3 shutout innings with a 15/4 K/BB rate. He's allowed two hits and a .245 opponent's OPS in that time.
