C Roberto Perez, who is sharing the catching chores with C Chris Gimenez since C Yan Gomes went on the disabled list, continues to struggle offensively. With runners at first and second and one out and the Indians trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the ninth inning Wednesday, Perez grounded into a game-ending double play. Perez missed much of the season with a torn ligament in his thumb, but in 10 games since his return he is hitting .045 (1-for-22).

The lightly-used Perez reached base three times on the evening, providing two singles and a hit by pitch. Perez has supplied a .351 on-base percentage on the season, but he's not a serious threat to cut into Yan Gomes' playing time behind the dish.

Perez is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Tigers, MLB.com's Jordan Bastian reports.

Perez started the last three games in place of the injured Yan Gomes, but he will return to the bench Wednesday with Gomes returning to the lineup. Expect Perez's playing time to be sporadic if Gomes remains healthy moving forward.

Perez, who homered and drove in three runs Monday, will alternate starts with stater Yan Gomes for the next five or six days, MLB.com reports.

Perez has shown some power in his limited role as Monday's blast was his fourth homer in 82 at-bats this season but doesn't figure to have much of a role once Gomes is back to full speed by the end of the week.
