Clippard now has a 6.98 ERA in his last 20 appearances dating to Sept. 6.

Clippard, who allowed three runs in the eighth to tie the game but picked up the win when the Mets scored twice in the ninth Saturday, will get the day off Sunday, ESPN New York reports.

Clippard has been used heavily by the Mets, pitching in four of the past five and seven of the past 11 games. Manager Terry Collins believes Clippard is tired which is why he will not be used Sunday.

Clippard, who pitched the last two games against the Nationals and has seen action in four of the past five contests, will not be available Thursday against the Braves, ESPN New York reports.

Jeurys Familia is also unavailable, meaning that Addison Reed might close if a save opportunity arises. Clippard should be ready to go Friday.

Clippard tossed another scoreless eighth inning, striking out two, Saturday against the Rockies.

Clippard has allowed three earned runs in 13.1 innings in 14 appearances since coming to the Mets. His 8:5 K:BB ratio leave a love to be desired, but he and Jeurys Familia have been the only two consistent performers in the Mets' bullpen. Look for manager Terry Collins to use Clippard heavily down the stretch.

Clippard could be a candidate to pick up a save Sunday if Jeurys Familia is unavailable, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports.

Clippard hasn't pitched since Friday, whereas Familia has been used on three straight days, throwing 44 pitches over that span. The 30-year-old Clippard collected 17 saves with the Athletics before being shipped to New York, so he's certainly no stranger to the closer's role. The status would only be temporary, however, as Familia is expected to retain that job despite blowing three save chances in a row before Saturday.

Clippard, who was acquired by the Mets on Monday, will work in a setup role in front of closer Jeurys Familia, Marc Carig of Newsday reports.

Clippard proved dependable as the ninth-inning man for the Athletics in the first half of the season, producing a 2.79 ERA and 1.19 WHIP while notching 17 saves, but his ratios pale in comparison to those of Familia, who also possesses more heat on his fastball. The arrival of Clippard may put some more pressure on Familia to perform well, but the Mets don't seem particularly motivated to create a closer controversy, given that Clippard has been at his best while working the eighth inning during his last several seasons with the Nationals. For now, he'll simply be tasked with preserve leads for the Mets' stellar starting pitching staff.
