Fri Jul 23 201016:54Cubs' Wells combines on shutout of Cards
Randy Wells pitched the first seven innings Friday as the Cubs shut out the Cardinals 6-0.
Sean Marshall finished up with hitless eighth and ninth innings. Wells has turned in five straight quality starts since his ERA peaked at 5.21 after his final interleague outing. He's now 5-7 with a 4.07 ERA.
Sat Jul 17 201016:29Wells takes tough-no decision vs. Phils
Randy Wells hurled seven shutout innings in a tough-luck no-decision against the Phillies on Saturday afternoon.
He was in line for his fifth win until Carlos Marmol blew a one-run lead in the ninth. Wells was excellent, allowing seven hits -- six of them singles -- while striking out five and walking two. He has allowed a total of four runs over his last three starts, lowering his ERA from 5.21 to 4.33. While it appeared that Wells pitched poorly during the first half, he was actually rather unlucky. Go ahead and pick him up for the second half, as he is still unowned in most mixed formats.
Sat Jul 3 201016:03Wells takes no-hitter into seventh vs. Reds
Randy Wells tossed 7 2/3 innings of one-run ball in a 3-1 win over the Reds on Saturday afternoon.
He didn't allow his first hit until a single by Chris Heisey to lead off the top of the seventh inning. Wells went on to allow five hits, with the lone run scoring on an RBI groundout by Orlando Cabrera in the top of the eighth. He fanned five and walked one in the win, improving his K/BB ratio to 76/27 over 98 1/3 innings. Sure, Wells has a 4.67 ERA through 17 starts, but his secondary stats suggest that he has deserved much better. He's one to target for the second half.
Thu Jun 24 201001:00Cubs' Wells allows six runs in loss
Randy Wells gave up six runs over six innings Wednesday in a loss to the Mariners.
Whether this has anything to do with him throwing 130 pitches last time out is anyone's guess. He was given an extra day off in between starts, and it's not as if this qualifies as his worst showing of the year or anything. On merit, he'd have been stashed in the bullpen a month ago. Wells is currently 3-6 with a 5.21 ERA.
Thu Jun 17 201017:19Cubs' Wells goes seven versus A's
Randy Wells threw a whopping 130 pitches while giving up two runs over seven innings Thursday against the A's.
It certainly figured that Wells was done after six, but manager Lou Piniella sent him back out for the seventh and he gave up a go-ahead run before leaving down 2-1. Fortunately for Piniella, the Cubs came back and won in the ninth. We'll see if big pitch count has any lasting effect on Wells. The right-hander had been struggling, giving up 16 runs over 15 1/3 innings in his previous four starts.
Fri Jun 11 201018:03Cubs' Wells gives up five runs in loss
Randy Wells surrendered five runs and 10 hits over five innings Friday in a loss to the White Sox.
Wells had far and away the highest ERA of the Cubs' starters when the decision was made to shift Tom Gorzelanny to the pen last month. Since then, he's allowed 11 runs in 15 1/3 innings, taking him up to 5.15 now. He better turn things around next time out.
Sun Jun 6 201017:10Wells struggles in loss to Astros
Randy Wells was touched up for six runs on nine hits over 5 1/3 innings in a loss to the Astros on Sunday.
After putting together a fantastic rookie campaign last year, Wells is experiencing some hiccups here in his sophomore season. He went 0-3 with a 5.40 ERA in May and is now off to a bad start in June with this rough outing against last-place Houston.
Mon May 31 201016:31Cubs' Wells goes five scoreless
Randy Wells, who was pulled from his start Friday in the first inning, pitched five scoreless innings against the Pirates on Monday.
If judged by this year's performance alone, Wells would have been removed from the rotation to make room for Carlos Zambrano. However, the Cubs showed faith in him by picking Tom Gorzelanny to be sent to the pen instead. Wells came through with the scoreless outing today, but because he's on such an odd schedule, the Cubs chose to limit his pitches. He threw 90 to get his 15 outs.
Fri May 28 201014:40Cubs' Wells can't get an out versus Cards
Randy Wells was pulled from his start Friday after giving up six straight hits and five runs to start the game against the Cardinals.
Wells, who recorded 25 outs against the Rangers on Saturday, couldn't get a one today, and his ERA jumped to 4.79. That's far and away the worst mark of the five guys to start regularly for the Cubs this season, and he might now be in danger of being dropped from the rotation in favor of Carlos Zambrano.
Sat May 22 201022:33Wells fans six batters in win over Rangers
Randy Wells struck out six batters over 8 1/3 innings Saturday as the Cubs grabbed an extra-innings victory from the Rangers.
Wells held a hot Rangers lineup to less than a hit per inning and surrendered only three earned runs. He's now strung together a handful of impressive starts and is worth owning in mixed leagues.
Thu May 6 201021:44Wells allows six earned in loss to Pirates
Randy Wells surrendered seven runs -- six earned -- over just two innings Thursday in a blowout loss to the Pirates.
The Bucs got to Wells early, plating five runs in the first inning and another two in the second. The right-hander was pulled soon after. Now 3-1 on the year with a 4.86 ERA, he's still worth owning in most leagues, but he needs to be better next week against the Marlins.
Sun Apr 25 201017:20Cubs' Wells tosses another quality start
Randy Wells held the Brewers to two runs in seven innings to record a win on Sunday.
Wells looked excellent while striking out six and walking none. Wells gave up four runs on 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings two starts ago against these same Brewers, but he had their number today. The right-hander has three quality starts and a 2.49 ERA in four outings thus far, in large part because he's yet to allow a homer. That trend shouldn't continue, and Wells has quickly become a sell-high candidate.
Mon Apr 19 201022:24Wellis goes six in no-decision vs. Mets
Randy Wells tossed six innings of one-run ball as part of a no-decision in a loss to the Mets on Monday night.
Wells didn't get any help from his offense. He certainly deserved better, scattering six hits while striking out five and walking two. He even notched two of the Cubs' nine hits himself. He may have taken a no-decision in this one, but the 27-year-old righty sports an impressive 2.45 ERA over his first three starts. Don't count on it staying that way, however.
Thu Apr 8 201022:06Wells picks up win with six scoreless innings
Randy Wells picked up a win in his 2010 debut Thursday, holding the Braves scoreless over six innings in a 2-0 victory.
Wells was helped to the victory by Tyler Colvin and Marlon Byrd homers, but he did most of the work himself. The sophomore fanned only one hitter and allowed two walks and got 13 outs via groundballs. Not a bad start for a guy that needs to be a reliable source of quality outings for the Cubs. Carlos Marmol picked up his first save with a shaky but effective ninth.
