Wed Sep 12 201201:27Blevins saves the day in victory over Angels
Jerry Blevins was mighty impressive, pitching out of a major jam to preserve a one-run victory over the Angels on Tuesday.
The A's entered the ninth with a 6-3 lead, but Grant Balfour allowed a pair of runs to score and left runners at first and third with nobody out. Blevins inherited the dicey situation, and immediately got Kendrys Morales to strike out on four pitches. He then got Howie Kendrick to hit into a game-ending double play ground out. While he's unlikely to take over the reigns of the closer's job anytime soon, he gets to be the hero for at least one evening.

It's the third time this season he's been designated, as a 3.93 ERA but 1.69 WHIP simply haven't been good enough for him to retain his roster spot. He cleared waivers and remained in the organization the first two times, so it stands to reason he'll be able to do so again.

Athletics designated LHP Jerry Blevins for assignment.
Doing so opens a roster spot for the recently-recalled Josh Outman. Blevins has battled control issues all season but was recalled a few days ago because Oakland's bullpen took a beating on Thursday. The 27-year-old southpaw appeared in 15 games for the A's this year, posting a 13/13 K/BB ratio and 4.40 ERA in 14 1/3 innings. Blevins, however, had a 3.70 ERA over 63 appearances last year and has handled lefties well over the course of his career. We'd expect Oakland to find a trade partner for him over the next 10 days.
