Kiermaier broke two bones in his hand and will be out indefinitely. "When you sit down and think about it," manager Kevin Cash said, "we're going to play the guys who produce." Mahtook pinch-hit in the seventh and grounded out to short.

Mahtook was 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in a losing effort against Toronto on Friday night.

Mahtook, a first round draft choice in 2011, has now homered in four of his last eight starts. He is hitting a solid .290, and his ability to play all three outfield spots makes him an intriguing roster option for the Rays going forward. His performance over the last month of the season has certainly helped boost his value for next season.

Mahtook also has a 5-for-5 performance during the month, and looks like a completely different hitter than the one who trudged through a .154 August. His recent surge offers considerable reason for optimism for both the Rays and fantasy owners heading into 2016.

The Rays are evaluating a lot of players right now, including a flock of outfielders, and Mahtook is doing his best to make an impression. He had a pair of doubles among his five hits, and he has jumped his average up to .301 on the season.

Mahtook started the last four games, but with Steven Souza back in action, he was squeezed out of the lineup Saturday, and is looking at a part-time role moving forward.
