Sun Oct 21 201200:20Mike Aviles heading to Jays for John Farrell
WEEI's Rob Bradford reports that Mike Aviles is headed to the Blue Jays in exchange for manager John Farrell.
The Red Sox will get a player or cash along with their new skipper, who has already agreed to a three-year contract. Aviles, 31, batted .250/.282/.381 with 13 home runs, 14 stolen bases and 60 RBI in 136 games this past season for the Red Sox. It's a decent get for Toronto, all things considered. Farrell was 154-170 with the Jays.

Wed Aug 1 201215:51Aviles (toe) out again Wednesday
Mike Aviles (toe) is out of the starting lineup again Wednesday.
Aviles hasn't played since Saturday due to turf toe. He was given a pain-killing injection on Tuesday, so his timetable will depend on how the injury responds. Pedro Ciriaco will continue to hold down the shortstop gig for now.

Mon Jul 30 201219:58Aviles misses 2nd straight game with turf toe
Mike Aviles was out of Monday's lineup for the second straight day with turf toe.
Pedro Ciriaco started in place of Aviles. "It's not a life-threatening situation, but it sure is an encumbrance and we're just trying to see what we can do to get that feeling out of there," said manager Bobby Valentine. "It's not fun to deal with, and so the less he strains it in the athletic motions of playing the better it can calm down. If it calms down, we'll have 100 percent Mike back." Ciriaco has earned additional playing time, even outside Aviles' health issues. While the veteran is mired in a slump, the rookie Ciriaco is batting .349 with eight RBI in 18 games.

Wed Jun 20 201223:08Mike Aviles hits three-run bomb in win
Mike Aviles went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer in Wednesday's 15-5 rout of the Marlins.
Aviles' second-inning bomb off of Ricky Nolasco was his first in 26 games. The multi-hit night was his fourth in six starts, however, while he's now driven in 40 runs. Aviles is hitting .268/.289/.430 through Boston's first 68 games.

Sun May 20 201217:12Mike Aviles homers for third straight game
Mike Aviles went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI in Sunday's win over the Phillies.
Aviles' first inning solo shot off of Cliff Lee was his third in three games. One of the game's streakiest hitters, Aviles added an RBI single in the second. Bringing a .275/.303/.497 triple slash into one of his patented hot streaks, there's no reason to bench Aviles until he shows signs of cooling.

Thu May 17 201221:36Aviles ejected for arguing third strike
Mike Aviles was ejected from Thursday's game against the Rays for arguing a called third strike.
Aviles went 1-for-4 with a run scored before getting the boot from home plate umpire Dan Bellino in the top of the seventh. It was the first ejection of his career. Nick Punto entered the game to replace him at shortstop.

Tue May 15 201219:06Mike Aviles doubles twice for Red Sox
Mike Aviles doubled twice and knocked in two runs against the Mariners on Tuesday.
Manager Bobby Valentine has taken to batting Aviles ninth against righties and first against lefties. It's not ideal for his fantasy value, but it likely is the smart way to play it. Aviles has nice power numbers for a shortstop, but his OBP currently sits at .292.

Fri May 11 201217:06Aviles not in Friday's lineup
Mike Aviles is not in Friday's lineup against the Indians.
We're assuming he's just getting the night off. Nick Punto will start in his place at shortstop and bat ninth against right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez.

Tue May 1 201223:33Aviles drives home two in Red Sox loss
Mike Aviles continued his roll against the A's on Tuesday, driving home two of Boston's three runs in a loss.
Aviles finished the game 1-for-5 including a two-run single off of Grant Balfour in the ninth inning. He's done an amazing job as a table setter and run producer out of the leadoff spot in the Red Sox lineup and is now hitting .286 with five homers, 18 runs scored and 19 RBI on the season. Those who invested in Aviles in fantasy leagues have been handsomely rewarded so far.

Tue Apr 24 201223:38Aviles has four hits, homer to lead Red Sox
Mike Aviles continued his hot hitting ways, going 4-for-5 with a homer in Boston's 11-2 thrashing of the Twins on Tuesday.
Aviles scored three runs and drove home two in the game. He's been on an absolute tear since taking over the leadoff spot in the wake of Jacoby Ellsbury's injury and is now hitting .333 with three homers and 10 RBI on the season. Those who gambled on Aviles late in drafts as a shortstop or middle infielder are certainly reaping the rewards.

Sat Apr 14 201212:12Mike Aviles batting leadoff Saturday
Mike Aviles is batting leadoff in Saturday's game against the Rays.
There was some talk about Aviles as a leadoff hitter in spring training, and he'll have an opportunity to see regular at-bats there with Jacoby Ellsbury (shoulder) sidelined. Cody Ross is starting in center field and batting sixth. Darnell McDonald is batting ninth.

Mike Aviles twisted his left ankle Monday.
It's why Nick Punto got the start at shortstop on Tuesday night against the Blue Jays. Aviles is day-to-day.

Tue Apr 10 201215:20Aviles not in Tuesday's lineup
Mike Aviles is not in the starting lineup Tuesday against the Blue Jays.
Nick Punto will make the start at shortstop and bat ninth against right-hander Kyle Drabek. Aviles should continue to play on a pretty regular basis, but Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine has already shown that he's not afraid to play Punto, as well.

Sun Apr 8 201218:04Aviles breaks out in wild loss
Batting eighth in Sunday's wild loss to the Tigers, Mike Aviles went 3-for-5 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored.
Aviles entered the game 0-for-6, and had yet to take an at-bat outside the nine hole. Even if manager Bobby Valentine keeps his position-versatile shortstop buried at the bottom of the order, he should rack up enough counting stats to be worth owning in a large majority of mixed leagues.

Tue Mar 27 201217:48Red Sox could use Aviles out of leadoff spot
Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine indicated Tuesday that he is thinking about using starting shortstop Mike Aviles out of the leadoff spot.
"Maybe, yeah," said Valentine. "Trying to warm up to it, see if I can see it. He quickly strikes fear into a pitcher's heart, I'll tell you that." We're afraid Valentine is exaggerating a bit here, as Aviles owns an underwhelming .318 career on-base percentage. One possible option is having him leadoff against southpaws, where he has a .348 career on-base percentage and a .924 OPS. Bobby V does like to mix things up, so we wouldn't rule it out. Either way, the 31-year-old is suddenly an intriguing fantasy option in AL-only and deeper mixed leagues.

Tue Mar 27 201210:01Aviles to open 2012 as Boston's starting SS
Mike Aviles will open the 2012 regular season as Boston's starting shortstop.
Aviles won the job by default, but he makes for an intriguing fantasy sleeper given the talent surrounding him in the Red Sox lineup and his own offensive potential. The 31-year-old holds a useful .288/.318/.419 career batting line and stole 14 bases in 91 games last year.
