Diamondbacks reassigned RHP Nelson Figueroa and C Tuffy Gosewisch to minor league camp. |
Figueroa missed the majority of spring training due to the World Baseball Classic. He was never a realistic candidate for the Opening Day roster. Gosewisch, 29, could push Wil Nieves for the backup catcher job this season and will likely open 2013 at Triple-A Reno. |

Fri Mar 15 2013 | 22:40 | Team USA eliminated from WBC by Puerto Rico |
Nelson Figueroa helped pitch Puerto Rico past Team USA in Friday's World Baseball Classic matchup by tossing six shutout innings as part of a 4-3 victory. |
Figueroa wasn't bringing much velocity, but he kept Team USA guessing by working both sides of the plate with precision. The 38-year-old journeyman gave up just two hits and a walk while striking out two. Team USA had plenty of chances after Figueroa left the game, but they failed to capitalize. With the win, Puerto Rico has clinched a spot in the WBC semifinals in San Francisco while Team USA has been eliminated from the tournament. |

Astros designated RHP Nelson Figueroa for assignment. |
Figueroa was removed from the starting rotation at the end of April and hasn't been much better out of the bullpen. He gets the boot after posting an ugly 8.89 ERA and 14/14 K/BB ratio over 27 1/3 innings. He's had some success in the past, so it will be interesting to see if another team makes a claim. |

Thu Apr 28 2011 | 23:39 | Nelson Figueroa knocked around again |
Nelson Figueroa was battered again Thursday, giving up four runs on six hits and three walks over five innings in the loss to the Cardinals. |
Figueroa even tried pitching exclusively from the stretch in this one, something he's had plenty of experience in this season with his 8.28 ERA and 2.00 WHIP over five starts. Astros manager Brad Mills gave Figueroa a vote of confidence earlier this week, but they simply can't keep running him out there. Assuming he's still in the rotation, he'll face the Reds in Cincy. |

Sun Apr 24 2011 | 11:58 | Nelson Figueroa will remain in rotation |
Astros manager Brad Mills said Nelson Figueroa will remain in the rotation after his most recent poor outing. |
Figueroa was pounded for six runs over four innings Friday and now holds an 8.55 ERA and 2.05 WHIP on the year. "I don't know if it's fair to him to hold a gun to his head after (Friday's) performance," Mills said. "He's still in there." Unfortunately, the Astros don't really have any good options to replace Figueroa right now other than top prospect Jordan Lyles, who is off to a rough start at Triple-A. |

Sat Apr 23 2011 | 00:05 | Nelson Figueroa blasted again |
Nelson Figueroa was knocked around again Friday, giving up six runs on six hits and five walks over just four innings in the loss to the Brewers. |
Figueroa was solid his last time out, but he's now been horrid in three of four outings this season and sports an 8.55 ERA and 2.05 WHIP on the year. The Astros have to think about replacing him, but with Jordan Lyles off to a slow start at Triple-A, there's no obvious choice to take his place. Assuming he's still in the rotation, his next outing will come against the Cardinals. |

A nice bounceback outing for the veteran righty, who wound up with a no-decision. He entered the start with a 10.61 ERA and 2.36 WHIP, and he left the outing with a 7.31 ERA and 1.88 WHIP. Figueroa will take on the Brewers next. |

Mon Apr 11 2011 | 23:43 | Figueroa again ineffective |
Nelson Figueroa was again ineffective on Monday, getting tagged for eight hits and five runs in just four innings of Houston's loss to the Cubs. |
He struck out three and walked two while watching his ERA balloon to 10.61. Figueroa was a tenuous own to begin with for NL-only league players, so if there's someone on the wire you're wanting to pick up, do not hesitate to drop the 36-year-old righty. |

Wed Apr 6 2011 | 23:00 | Figueroa implodes as Houston crumbles |
Nelson Figueroa came apart after being staked to a 4-0 lead on Wednesday evening, allowing 11 hits and 10 runs (six earned) in just 5 1/3 innings of work as Houston lost to the Reds. |
Figueroa never allowed more than five runs in any of his 10 2010 starts. Thanks to Houston's iffy pitching depth, he should be on a fairly long leash this season, but you'll really be pushing it if you're relying on him in your NL-only league. |
