Sat Aug 13 201115:00Report: D'Backs interested in Lyle Overbay
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Diamondbacks are considering signing Lyle Overbay in the wake of Xavier Nady's injury.
Overbay, who was released by the Pirates earlier this week, would be used in a backup role, as Paul Goldschmidt should continue to handle first base. He was drafted by the D'Backs and spent parts of his first three big-league seasons with Arizona before being dealt to the Brewers.

Tue Aug 9 201117:03Pirates release 1B Lyle Overbay
Pirates released 1B Lyle Overbay.
Overbay unsurprisingly passed through waivers after being designated for assignment following the trade deadline. While he can now be signed at the major league minimum, the Pirates are responsible for the remainder of his $5 million contract this season.

Mon Aug 1 201113:13Pirates DFA Overbay
Pirates designated 1B Lyle Overbay for assignment.
The Bucs acquired Derrek Lee from the Orioles before Sunday's trade deadline and intend to start him at first base down the stretch. That move, of course, made Overbay expendable. The 34-year-old first baseman hit just .227/.300/.349 in 103 games with Pittsburgh.

Sun Jul 31 201117:36Overbay homers in loss
Lyle Overbay hit a two-run homer in Pittsburgh's 6-5, 10-inning loss to the Phillies on Sunday.
Of course, he also struck out three times in what was his final start as the Pirates' everyday first baseman. With Derrek Lee now in tow in Pittsburgh, Overbay will be just about out of NL-only league value.

Fri Jul 29 201111:08Lyle Overbay running out of time
Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Thursday that Lyle Overbay must start producing soon or will lose his starting job.
Overbay has a woeful .646 OPS for the year. "That's where we are right now [at the point where a decision needs to be made]," Hurdle said. "Lyle's had a large volume of at-bats. We had a heart-to-heart conversation a while ago, back when he took three days off. He has enough experience in this game to understand there is a need now. Is there time to catch a spark? Yes, but we need to get something done sooner rather than later." Hurdle should have made the declaration about two months ago, but better late than never, we suppose. Steve Pearce would be in line for more playing time if Overbay is benched, though the Pirates could seek a trade.

Tue Jul 19 201100:46Overbay continues to struggle
Lyle Overbay went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in Pittsburgh's 2-0 win over the Reds on Monday.
Overbay is now the owner of an anemic .238/.307/.362 triple slash through his first 349 plate appearances this season, and with the Pirates appearing as if they fully intend to "go for it," the odds are quite high they're trying to find up an upgrade at first base heading into the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.

Wed Jun 1 201122:39Overbay, Pirates bring home bizarre win
Lyle Overbay contributed RBI singles in both the seventh and eighth innings on Wednesday evening, helping the Pirates turn a 2-0 deficit into a 9-3 win over the Mets.
It was a very bizarre two innings for the Bucs tonight, who plated nine runs despite turning in just one extra-base hit. Overbay has now driven in four runs in his past four games, and 21 on the season.

Sun May 29 201119:46Overbay has two-RBI day in loss
Lyle Overbay doubled home the Pirates' only two runs in the first inning of their loss to the Cubs on Sunday.
The two-RBI day was Overbay's first since April 23 (29 games). Through his first 173 at-bats in a Pirates uniform, he now owns a .237/5/19 triple-crown slash. Interest in him ahead of this summer's non-waiver trade deadline should be pretty limited.

Sun Apr 10 201116:42Overbay picks up two RBI in loss
Lyle Overbay ripped a two-run double off of Jhoulys Chacin in the third inning on Sunday, but it wasn't enough for the Pirates in their loss to the Rockies.
The RBI were his fifth and sixth. Overbay is hitting just .237 through his first 10 games in a Bucs uniform, and may not be long for the cleanup spot.

Sat Mar 19 201116:36Overbay knocks in two for Pirates
Lyle Overbay went 2-for-3 with a two-run double Saturday in the Pirates' 7-5 win over the Red Sox.
Manager Clint Hurdle is still experimenting with his lineup, and Overbay was hitting cleanup in between Andrew McCutchen and Pedro Alvarez today. He's far from an ideal option in that spot, but it'd help his fantasy value if he stays there against right-handers.

Sat Mar 5 201115:59Overbay goes 3-for-3 from cleanup spot
Lyle Overbay went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored in the Pirates' 4-3 defeat of the Phillies on Saturday.
Overbay had been hitting fifth or sixth for the Pirates, but he was moved into the cleanup spot as manager Clint Hurdle juggled the lineup today. He's 6-for-16 with a homer this spring. It looks like the current plan is for him to follow Pedro Alvarez in the lineup against righties and bat sixth when he starts against lefties.

Mon Feb 28 201116:52Pirates' Overbay hits first homer
Lyle Overbay took lefty specialist Clay Rapada deep Monday in the loss to the Orioles.
Overbay hit .222/.295/.405 against lefties last season and considerably worse the previous two years, but the Pirates say they signed him to be their everyday first baseman and it figures that he'll get to start versus southpaws initially. A couple of more homers off guys like Rapada would certainly further his case.
Tue Dec 14 201014:54Bucs finalize $5M contract with 1B Overbay
Pirates signed 1B Lyle Overbay to a one-year, $5 million contract.
Overbay had lunch on Tuesday afternoon with new Bucs manager Clint Hurdle and was apparently sold immediately on the idea of heading to Pittsburgh. He should have a fairly productive year if he swings the bat like he did in 2010 for the Blue Jays, amassing 20 homers and 67 RBI. The Pirates are going to start him at first base and push Garrett Jones to the outfield.

Tue Dec 14 201013:24Pirates, Overbay come to one-year agreement
MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports that the Pirates have reached agreement on a one-year contract with first baseman Lyle Overbay.
It's not a bad signing, not for the Pirates. They have to pull off the scrap heap because of budgetary constraints and Overbay was pretty productive in a tough AL East division last year, slugging 20 homers with 67 RBI. He'll start at first base in Pittsburgh and should be a factor in NL-only leagues. The exact financial terms of the deal have not yet been released.

Tue Dec 14 201012:46Pirates moving close to deal with 1B Overbay
Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that the Pirates and free agent first baseman Lyle Overbay are "moving close" to an agreement.
The Pirates are likely to stat Overbay at first base next season. He was far from a top free agent, but the 33-year-old managed to slug 20 home runs and collect 67 RBI over 534 at-bats in 2010 for the Blue Jays. Given that he's moving from the ever-tough AL East to the far easier NL Central, Overbay may be someone worth monitoring in NL-only fantasy leagues.

Tue Dec 14 201008:49Pirates in discussions for Lyle Overbay
The Pirates have been in discussions with free agent Lyle Overbay.
Overbay participated in the Blue Jays' big power surge last season, posting 20 home runs and 67 RBI over 534 at-bats despite a mediocre .243/.329/.433 overall batting line. The 33-year-old would definitely be able to find playing time in Pittsburgh, but he probably wouldn't fare too well.

Sat Sep 25 201017:45Overbay's walkoff pushes Jays past O's
Lyle Overbay blasted a walk-off solo home run in a 5-4 win over the Orioles in 11 innings on Saturday afternoon.
Aaron Hill, Travis Snider and Edwin Encarnacion also went deep in this one. The Blue Jays continue to lead the major leagues with 241 home runs over 154 games this season. With eight games left on the docket, they have a very good chance to surpass the Yankees' major league-leading total of 244 home runs from last season.
Sat Sep 4 201017:02Overbay homers in loss to Yanks
Lyle Overbay went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and three RBI in a loss to the Yankees on Saturday.
With three extra-base hits over the past two days, it looks like his concussion-like symptoms are behind him. Overbay slugged his 17th home run of the season in the second inning and a two-run double off Dustin Moseley in the seventh. The veteran first baseman hasn't hit more than 16 homers in a season since his first season in Toronto in 2006.
Sat Sep 4 201003:15Lyle Overbay returned to action on Friday September 3
Lyle Overbay returned to action on Friday September 3.
Tue Aug 31 201016:56Overbay (head) not in Tuesday's lineup
Lyle Overbay (head) is out of the lineup for the fourth straight day Tuesday.
And it has nothing to do with a trade. Overbay collided with teammate Brian Tallet near the mound last Tuesday and began feeling some symptoms on Friday. He described his condition as having a "heavy head," but said he hasn't experienced any headaches or dizziness. He'll hit Tuesday and hopes to return to the lineup as soon as Wednesday. Adam Lind will play first base in his place Tuesday.
