Fri Aug 28 201519:08Chris Heston: Will Start Sunday
Heston was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Friday and will start Sunday against the Cardinals.
With Matt Cain (elbow) landing on the DL, Heston will return following a brief demotion to Sacramento. His assignment to Triple-A was primarily for rest purposes, and after a bullpen session Wednesday, Heston said he feels good and that the rest should prove beneficial down the stretch. The 27-year-old has gone 11-7 with a 3.34 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 110:48 K:BB in 145.2 innings with the big club so far this season.

Fri Aug 21 201518:01Chris Heston: Optioned To Triple-A
Heston was optioned to Triple-A Fresno on Friday, Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area reports.
Heston's demotion isn't really the result of poor performance as much as a lack of room on the roster and in the rotation. The 27-year-old has posted a 3.34 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with 110 strikeouts in 145.2 innings. He'll return to Triple-A Fresno for now, but could rejoin the club in September with the roster expansion.

Heston took a no decision Monday against the Cardinals, as he allowed one run on four hits and five walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out four.
Heston's wildness found him trouble often, and he needed 104 pitches to get through less than five innings. He managed to hold the Cardinals to 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and the only extra-base hit he allowed was a solo home run from Yadier Molina, which allowed him to limit the damage. Heston still has a 3.34 ERA, but his 15:16 K:BB over his past five starts is somewhat unnerving.

Heston (11-7) limited the Astros to one run on three hits and four walks Wednesday, but was stuck with a hard-luck loss.
Heston's had a couple of four-walk outings this year, but the other one was more than a month ago, so he's not making a habit of issuing too many free passes. Still, he's seen generally reduced effectiveness lately -- over his last four outings, Heston owns an ugly 11:11 K:BB in 22 innings. The Giants need him to be better than that down the stretch, but it seems the league may be making progress toward figuring Heston out. He'll have to adjust in kind.

Heston (11-6) gave up five runs, five hits and two walks in four innings against the Cubs on Thursday.
Heston, tops among major league rookies in wins, went four innings and took the loss after going 5-0 in his previous eight starts for the Giants. The 27-year-old has now failed to pitch past the fifth inning in each of his past two starts after having had six straight quality starts. Heston's record now stands at 11-6 on the season, and he'll take a 3.48 ERA into Wednesday's start against the Astros.

Heston (11-5) lasted just 4.2 innings Saturday against the Rangers, allowing three runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts in a no-decision.
Manager Bruce Bochy opted to pull Heston after 93 pitches with two outs in the fifth and a runner on second in a tie game. The 27-year-old right-hander didn't have his best stuff in this outing after going 5-0 with a 2.11 ERA in his previous seven starts. All of Heston's subpar performances like this one tend to fall on the road, as his home ERA is a sparkling 2.57. His next outing will in Chicago on Friday against the Cubs.

Heston's next start will be pushed up to Saturday against Texas, Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area reports.
The Giants will have the newly-acquired Mike Leake pitch Sunday to keep him in line with his regular pitching schedule. With Thursday's off day, Heston will be pitching on regular rest as well. He will look to continue his current three-game winning streak.

Heston pitched seven innings and allowed two runs on five hits and three walks to earn the win Monday against Milwaukee. He struck out four.
Heston now has thrown six straight quality starts and has allowed just 26 hits in 41.1 innings (5.7 H/9) over that span. Heston hasn't allowed a home run since serving up three to the Rockies in Colorado on May 23; Monday's outing extended his homerless streak to 11 starts, a stretch in which his ERA has dropped from 4.33 to 3.14.

Heston allowed just one hit over 7.1 shutout innings in his 10th win Tuesday against San Diego. He struck out six and walked two.
Heston was a ground ball machine again Tuesday night, as he induced 12 grounders against just four fly balls as part of the dominant outing. The 3-to-1 groundball-flyball ratio was typical of his season to date and a big reason why his ERA is a sparkling 3.18.

Heston picked up his ninth win of the season Sunday, holding the Phillies to one run on seven hits over 6.2 innings. He walked none and struck out seven.
Heston was cruising through six innings when the Phillies strung together three consecutive hits and forced the Giants to go to the bullpen. He only needed 78 pitches to earn his club-leading ninth win. Despite not being a highly touted prospect, Heston has really held his own at the major league level. His 7.17 K/9 and 2.42 BB/9 are solid, and he uses his heavy sinker to induce ground balls (56.3 GB%). Other than a lack of a track record, there are no indications that Heston is getting lucky or that a major regression is on the horizon.

Heston struck out two and walked four while holding the Mets to three hits over 7.1 scoreless innings a no-decison Monday night.
Unfortunately for Heston, Jon Niese tossed eight scoreless frames on the other side of the pitching matchup Monday. Heston struggled with his command through the start (13-for-29 first-pitch strikes), but the struggling Mets offense pounded the ball into the ground regularly (12 grounders) and failed to generate much of a threat against him. Heston will start the Giants' final game before the All-Star break Sunday against the Phillies.

Heston went six innings, giving up three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out one Wednesday against the Marlins.
Heston picked up a no-decision after having won five of his previous seven starts, one of which was a no-hitter against the Mets. The 27-year-old has allowed three or fewer runs in his past five starts, and he'll go against the Mets in his next scheduled start Monday.

Heston (8-5) gave up two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out six in seven innings Thursday against the Padres.
Heston, who pitched a no-hitter at the New York Mets on June 9, won for the third time in four starts. The 27-year-old had command of the strike zone and was able to work both sides of the plate in an impressive showing. Heston will go for win number nine in his next scheduled start Wednesday at Miami.

Heston earned his seventh win of he season Friday against the Dodgers, allowing three runs through 5.2 innings. He struck out one and did not walk a batter.
While he was able to limit base runners for the most part, the rookie allowed multiple men to reach base in the second and third innings when he gave up all three of the Dodgers' runs on the night. Heston is now 7-5 on the season and will carry a 3.83 ERA into Thursday's scheduled start against the Padres.

Heston was handed his fifth loss of the season Sunday against the Diamondbacks, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and four walks through five innings. He struck out six batters in defeat.
The 27-year-old rookie didn't quite match the no-hitter from his previous appearance, but cruised after allowing an early unearned run before getting into trouble in the fifth and sixth innings, when he put men on base and allowed a pair of runs. Heston's record now stands at 6-5 on the season and he will take a 3.76 ERA into Friday's start against the Dodgers.

Heston no-hit the Mets on Tuesday night and was only three hit batsmen away from a perfect game. He struck out 11 and moved to 6-4 with the win.
Heston struck out the side looking in the bottom of the ninth inning (and had a bit of help from the home plate umpire) to close out a 110-pitch effort. Heston now has two complete game efforts with at least 10 strikeouts, the other coming May 12th against Houston. He owns a 3.77 ERA and an excellent 3.7 K/BB on the season.

Heston allowed four hits and a walk while striking out six in 7.1 scoreless innings against the Braves on Thursday.
Prior to Thursday's shutout, Heston had allowed 11 runs in his previous 7.2 innings. Thursday was another story. Heston (5-3) retired 16 of the first 18 Braves he faced and ultimately outdueled Shelby Miller to pick up his fifth victory of the season. His next start is scheduled for Tuesday against Pittsburgh.

Heston gave up six runs on eight hits -- including three home runs -- and two walks, with two strikeouts over 5.2 innings, but still earned the win over Colorado in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader.
The three home runs allowed by Heston matched his number from his first eight starts combined. Heston has now allowed 11 runs in his last two starts and five or more runs in four of his last six outings, resulting in a 4.33 ERA and 1.35 WHIP over 54 frames. As things currently line up, his next start will come Thursday at home against the Braves.
