Sun Jun 29 201411:52Masterson (knee) cleared to return Tuesday
Justin Masterson (knee) has been cleared to rejoin the Indians' rotation on Tuesday against the Dodgers after throwing a bullpen session Saturday.
Masterson had a start pushed back a couple days due to a sore right knee issue, an issue that's been bothering him since his second outing of the season. However, he's been given the go-ahead to rejoin the rotation. "He's all set for Tuesday," said manager Terry Francona. Added pitching coach Mickey Callaway: "He felt good and let the ball go. His command was good and his velo was good. The action on his pitches was good."

Fri Jun 27 201410:25Masterson has had knee issue since 2nd start
Justin Masterson revealed Wednesday that the right knee issue that will force him to miss his start Sunday has been a problem since his second outing of the season.
It could help explain why Masterson's velocity has been down and his ERA is up to 5.03. "I don't know," said Masterson. "It's just been a little nagging. Maybe it's taken (away) a little of the power and consistency?" The Indians might be best off shutting Masterson down for a while, but the hope is that he'll feel well enough to start Tuesday or Wednesday. T.J. House is likely to be called up to start Sunday.

Wed Jun 25 201419:46Masterson to miss next start with sore knee
Justin Masterson will miss Sunday's start with a sore right knee.
It could partially explain why he lasted just four innings in Tuesday's start against the Diamondbacks. The right-hander will only be pushed back two days due to the ailment, so at this point it doesn't appear Masterson will need a trip to the disabled list. The Indians will need to find a spot starter for Sunday's game in the meantime.

Wed Jun 25 201403:15Masterson hits showers early in defeat vs. AZ
Justin Masterson was chased out of Tuesday's against the Diamondbacks after giving up five runs over four innings.
Masterson was looking to build upon Thursday's strong start (7 IP, 1 ER) but instead penned another chapter of a disappointing 2014 campaign. He walked four and gave up seven hits in tonight's no-decision to push his ERA to 5.03. Masterson entered this evening with a 3.32 ERA in June, but the tall right-hander isn't showing enough consistency yet to be trustworthy in mixed leagues. Masterson gets the ball in Seattle on Sunday.

Thu Jun 19 201415:51Masterson throws seven solid innings vs. ANA
Justin Masterson yielded just one run across seven innings Thursday in the Indians' win over the Angels.
Masterson was pitching on an extra day of rest following Wednesday's rainout and looked refreshed, limiting the Halos to four hits and three walks while striking out five. He was left with a no-decision because the Indians didn't win the game until the bottom of the 10th. Masterson still has an ugly 4.75 ERA and 1.48 WHIP on the year, but he'll try to stay hot next time out in Arizona.

Fri Jun 13 201423:16Masterson has short night against Red Sox
Justin Masterson was chased after giving up five runs over two-plus innings Friday against the Red Sox.
It was his shortest start of the season. Masterson was pulled after giving up back-to-back walks to begin the third inning. All told, he allowed three hits and four walks while throwing just 28 out of 59 pitches for strikes. While Masterson showed signs of progress with his last two starts, he took another step back with this one. His ERA now sits at a disappointing 5.05 for the year.

Sun Jun 8 201419:40Masterson picks up second straight win Sunday
Justin Masterson earned his second straight win on Sunday, limiting the Rangers to two runs over 5 2/3 innings in the victory.
It wasn't as dominant as his 10-strikeout performance his last time out, but the win was still his second good outing in a row after a rough stretch in May. Masterson gave up five hits and two walks while striking out six in the game, lowering his ERA to 4.61. He's got another tough test Friday when he takes on the Red Sox, his former club, at Fenway.

Mon Jun 2 201421:57Justin Masteron fans 10 in beating Boston
Justin Masterson blanked the Red Sox for seven innings, striking out 10, in a win Monday.
That's as many strikeouts as he had in his previous four starts combined. It was also his longest outing in a month. Masterson's ERA had been all of the way up to 5.21. He still doesn't look as strong as he did last year, though the Red Sox had no answer for him tonight. He'll be a risky play against this weekend in Texas.

Thu May 22 201423:42Masterson allows 5 ER to pick up no-decision
Justin Masterson got the no-decision, allowing five runs in 5 2/3 innings as the Indians defeated the Orioles 8-7 in 13 innings on Thursday.
Masterson's ERA continues to climb, allowing five or more runs in his third consecutive start and for the sixth time in 11 starts. The right-hander allowed eight hits, walked three, and struck out only two. Masterson and his 5.32 ERA and 1.52 WHIP will seek deflation in next week's start against the White Sox on the road.

Sun May 18 201417:03Justin Masterson gives up seven runs in loss
Justin Masterson surrendered seven runs and walked five in 4 1/3 innings Sunday in a loss to the A's.
Masterson's walk rate was down a bit earlier, but now he's issued 12 free passes over his last three starts, recording just 12 strikeouts in the process. With his velocity still down, he just doesn't have the stuff to work around those free passes right now. He should be treated as a spot starter in mixed leagues, and he's not a very good play with a road start against the Orioles next on the schedule.

Tue May 13 201421:53Masteron's rough sixth inning leads to loss
Justin Masterson picked up the loss in Tuesday's start against the Blue Jays, surrendering five runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Masterson's mediocre 2014 continues. The right-hander allowed six hits and three walks while striking out four, leaving him with five quality starts in nine outings and a 4.31 ERA. The sixth inning proved fateful as he gave up a two-run double to Adam Lind and another RBI double to Juan Francisco. Masterson will look to rebound in his next start at home against the Athletics.

Thu May 8 201415:42Justin Masterson strikes out seven in win
Justin Masterson allowed four runs -- two earned -- and struck out seven in 6 1/3 innings Thursday against the Twins.
More unearned runs. He gave up just one in 29 starts and 193 innings last year. This year, he's given up one in five of his eight starts (and he allowed no runs at all in two of the other three). After a sluggish start with his velocity down, Masterson is now 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA for the year.

Sat May 3 201420:51Masterson throws 7 1/3 scoreless for first W
Justin Masterson tossed 7 1/3 innings of shutout ball in the Indians' defeat of the White Sox on Saturday.
That's more like it. Masterson entered the outing with an ugly 4.84 ERA, but that mark was down to 4.01 by the end of the day. He struck out six Chicago batters, issued just one walk, and yielded only four hits en route to his first victory of the 2014 season. He should be able to stay hot in his next start at home against the Twins.

Tue Apr 29 201400:57Masterson works 7 1/3 innings in defeat
Justin Masterson served up six runs -- five earned -- on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings in a loss against the Angels on Monday.
He struck out five and walked two. Masterson entered the eighth inning in a 3-3 game with a pitch count below 100, but he probably felt taxed watching leadoff hitter J.B. Shuck reach on Nick Swisher's error. That started a sequence which ended in Raul Ibanez's two-run triple four batters later. Terry Francona had seen enough at that point. The right-hander has now allowed exactly five earned runs in three of his last five starts, which shows in his 4.84 ERA. Masterson desires progress this weekend against the White Sox in Cleveland.

Fri Apr 18 201423:21Masterson gives up two runs in no-decision
Justin Masterson gave up two runs in 6 1/3 innings against the Blue Jays on Friday.
Masterson left with the lead with one on and one out in the top of the seventh inning. However, the Blue Jays got to Marc Rzepczynski and Cody Allen to pull ahead for good. Masterson walked two and struck out a season-high nine in the no-decision. After back-to-back shaky starts, he appears to be moving in the right direction. He'll square off against the Royals next week.

Sat Apr 12 201417:42Justin Masterson hit hard by White Sox
Justin Masterson was hit extremely hard in a no-decision against the White Sox on Saturday, surrendering six runs (five earned) on seven hits in just 4 2/3 innings.
Masterson also issued five free passes while striking out seven on the afternoon. Twice the Indians offense handed him leads in the game that he was unable to hold onto. After an incredible 2013 campaign, Masterson has failed to live up to expectations in the early going, posting a 5.87 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 15/9 K/BB ratio in his first 15 1/3 innings. He'll again look for his first victory when he takes on the Tigers in Detroit on Thursday.

Tue Apr 1 201409:52Masterson spins seven scoreless frames
Justin Masterson spun seven scoreless innings in a no-decision on Opening Day against the Athletics.
Masterson was brilliant, allowing just three hits and one walk while fanning four batters. However, he didn't get any help from his offense and Sonny Gray nearly matched him. Coming off a 3.45 ERA with 195 strikeouts over 193 innings in 2013, the 29-year-old could find a huge contract in free agency this winter if he can come close to matching those numbers this year.

Justin Masterson pitched well in his start against the Brewers on Wednesday, allowing one run in 5 2/3 innings.
Masterson allowed only three hits and walked two while striking out five. The right-hander has had a fantastic spring, carrying a 1.09 ERA with 25 strikeouts and six walks in 24 2/3 innings overall. Masterson will oppose Sonny Gray of the Athletics on Opening Day.
