Payton registered seven points (3-10 FG, 1-3 3Pt, 0-2 FT), nine assists, two rebounds, one steal, and five turnovers in 32 minutes in Saturday's summer league overtime victory over the Clippers.
Payton struggled with his shot and familiarity with new teammates. He's spent time with shooting coach Dave Love this offseason, but those reworked mechanics haven't beared immediate fruit.

Payton will be looking over his shoulder during his second year in the league after the Magic selected Mario Hezonja in the 2015 NBA Draft.
Payton had a strong finish to his rookie campaign and it would be very surprising if Hezonja supplants the incumbent point guard this coming season. In fact, Hezonja proved to be such a versatile player during his workouts that he may even shift down to small forward as his primary position. While Payton's spot as the Magic's starting point guard seems to be safe at the moment, the newest member of the team will be lurking in the shadows over the next couple of seasons as a more offensive-minded option for head coach Scott Skiles.

Payton is working with shooting coach Dave Love on his mechanics, the Orlando Sentinel reports.
Payton converted 33 percent of his shots outside of eight feet during his rookie season, including 26 percent on three-pointers. An improved jumper will help space the floor, and a boost in his free-throw percentage will make Payton a more palatable option in rotisserie leagues next season.

Payton concluded his rookie season fourth in Rookie of the Year voting by compiling 8.9 points, 6.5 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.7 steals in 30.4 minutes per game as the only Magic player to appear in all 82 games.
Payton predictably struggled with his shooting, converting 26 percent of his three-pointers and 55 percent of his free-throws. As the season progressed, Payton's stats and playing time increased, spiking when James Borrego replaced Jacque Vaughn and Evan Fournier missed time with a hip injury. He shot 73 percent from the free-throw line the final 14 games and a monthly low of 40 percent from the field in April. Even though his minutes increased, Payton only averaged 2.6 turnovers in 63 starts, displaying control and poise as the team's primary ballhandler. He plans on participating during summer league, and his role heading into next season may fluctuate depending on the coaching hire. Payton appears the prohibitive favorite to win the starting point guard role, but his percentages must undergo massive overhaul to be considered a top-flight fantasy asset. It is believed he'll work this summer with shooting coach Dave Love, the same Dave Love who helped Aaron Gordon improve his free-throw mark from 42 percent in college to 72 percent in the pros.

Payton will participate in the Orlando Pro Summer League, the Orlando Sentinel reports.
Payton was one of three rookies to play all 82 games. He led the class with 6.5 assists per game, but will need to improve his shooting mechanics this offseason. Payton will probably refrain from playing every summer league contest.

Payton stuffed the stat sheet Friday against the Raptors, posting six points, six rebounds, eight assists, four steals, and two blocks in 35 minutes of action.
Payton has been rather consistent over the past five games, averaging 11.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, 9.0 assists, 3.4 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game. His all-around production makes him a must-own player in most leagues, in spite of his low shooting percentages.

Payton scored 17 points (6-14 FG, 2-2 3Pt, 3-3 FT) with nine rebounds, nine assists and two steals in 40 minutes during Wednesday's win over the Bulls.
The rookie point guard continues to shine, averaging 14.1 points, 9.7 assists, 7.3 boards and 2.6 steals over his last nine games. Payton has even shot .481 (53-for-110) from the floor and .895 (17-for-19) from the free throw line over that stretch, turning from a liability into an asset in those categories.

Payton posted 10 points, six rebounds, 10 assists, and four steals in 40 minutes of action Friday against the Timberwolves.
Payton is averaging 12.6 points, 6.8 rebounds, 9.0 assists, and 2.4 steals over the last five games. He has been noticeably improving on his poor percentages as well, averaging 44 percent FG and 82 percent FT during that span. Although he had some early-season struggles, he's panning out to be a force to reckon with in fantasy.

Payton scored 14 points on 7-for-15 shooting with seven rebounds, seven assists, four steals and a block in 36 minutes during Wednesday's loss to the Spurs.
Not surprisingly given the opponent, it was a fairly quiet night by Payton's recent standards, as the point guard has become a near-nightly triple-double threat at the tail end of his rookie season. Look for him to turn in even better numbers on Friday against the banged-up Timberwolves.

Payton continued to dominate Friday against the Pistons, posting 14 points, four rebounds, and 13 assists in 39 minutes of action.
Payton has really emerged over the past month, and even more so over recent games. The rookie is averaging 15.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, 10.0 assists, and 2.0 steals over the last five games. Even more impressive is the fact that he's managed to average strong percentages during that span (53 percent FG, 85 percent FT). While the rule of averages would condemn his percentages to sink sometime or another, his contribution in counting categories makes him a must-own player in a wide variety of leagues.

Payton scored 19 points (7-19 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 5-7 FT) with nine rebounds, seven assists and a steal in 35 minutes during Wednesday's loss to the Hawks.
He's closing out his rookie campaign in style, averaging 14.7 points, 8.5 assists, 6.7 boards and 1.8 steals over his last 11 games. Payton figures to be a very interesting fantasy sleeper next season.

Payton posted his second consecutive triple-double Friday against the Blazers, contributing 22 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, and four steals in 37 minutes of action.
Payton also managed to shoot 77 percent from the field and 100 percent from the line Friday -- a feat that seems like a far off fantasy for the rookie. He's now averaging 16.0 points, 7.6 rebounds, 9.6 assists, and 22 steals over the last five games, and it doesn't appear like he'll slow down anytime soon. Continue to ride the up-and-rising star.

Payton recorded his first career triple-double, finishing with 15 points (6-10 FG, 1-2 3Pt, 2-2 FT), 12 assists, 10 rebounds, and two steals in 41 minutes Wednesday against the Mavericks.
Payton had been flirting with a triple-double of late and finally delivered. His minutes were inflated because the Magic has been without Willie Green (back) and Evan Fournier (hip). The most encouraging sign from this game is the efficiency. He knocked in two critical, pressure-packed free throws with a minute left, and he hit a three-pointer for the third time in the last four games.

Payton dominated Friday against the Celtics, posting 20 points (7-16 FG, 4-15 FT, 2-3 3Pt), five rebounds, nine assists, one steal and one block in 34 minutes of action.
Payton put up and exceptional performance Friday, though his free-throw woes have been sinking his owners in multiple-category leagues. By this point, it should no longer be a surprise: he posts strong counting stats while hurting percentages. Still, owners who can stomach the inefficient percentages should take joy in the fact that he's been playing excellently of late, averaging 15.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, 7.8 assists, and 1.2 steals over the last five games.

Payton recorded his third straight double-double in a win over the Celtics on Sunday, scoring 19 points (7-16 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 5-6 FT) and grabbing 10 boards in addition to dishing out seven assists in 42 minutes.
Payton's two other double-doubles came off of points and assists, but he's been known to post big rebounding games from time to time. In his past three games, he's scored a combined 38 points and has a combined 29 assists.

Payton scored nine points (4-11 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 1-2 FT) with 10 assists, five steals and four rebounds in 33 minutes during Wednesday's loss to the Suns.
The rookie continues to have solid value in leagues and formats where his lack of scoring and poor percentages can be tolerated, but Payton will need to put in a lot of work on his shot this offseason if he wants to become anything more than a poor man's Rajon Rondo.

Payton went scoreless (0-4 FG) in 14 minutes of action Sunday against the Hornets. He contributed just one rebound and one assist.
It's unclear why Payton didn't get much playing time Sunday, as there was no reported injury. He averaged 7.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 6.2 assists, and 1.7 steals per game in February, and is still worth holding onto, in spite of his poor percentages.

Payton won't get benched by coach James Borrego if opposing teams intentionally foul him, John Denton reports.
Payton was intentionally fouled at the end of Sunday's game against the Sixers, converting 4-of-8 free throws the final four minutes of the fourth quarter. This season, he's shooting 54 percent from the charity stripe, 52 percent during the fourth quarter, and 43 percent the final five minutes when the game is within five points. Coach Borrego has played Payton 32.9 minutes per game since assuming head coaching duties, similar to his playing time under Jacque Vaughn.

Payton put up 14 points (6-8 FG, 2-6 FT), six rebounds, nine assists and one steal in 40 minutes on Wednesday.
It's good to see him lead the team in minutes, and even better to see him shoot 6-of-8. He's shooting 54 percent from the free throw line, something he's likely to struggle with all season long. He averaged just 2.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists in 21 minutes in his two previous while dealing with some knee soreness. It seems that he is feeling fine after Wednesday's performance.

Payton played through any knee soreness he was having Sunday, putting up 10 points (4-8 FG, 2-5 FT), three rebounds, eight assists, and one steal in 31 minutes.
Payton left in the fourth quarter of Friday's game with knee soreness and was a game-time decision Sunday, but playing 30 minutes is a fairly good indicator that he should be safe to start with three games on the schedule for Week 14.
