LHP Wei-Yin Chen (left elbow) threw a two-inning simulated game Friday. It was the second simulated game for Chen, who threw an inning on Tuesday. The progression has him on pace to rejoin the Marlins this season, barring any setbacks. Chen, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list May 5 (retroactive to May 2) with what was first described as a tired left arm, is trying to pitch through a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow. He is 2-1 with a 4.33 ERA in five starts this season.

LHP Wei-Yin Chen, on the disabled list due to elbow discomfort, is expected to return on Tuesday. Chen, a 31-year-old native of Taiwan, is 2-1 with a 4.33 ERA this season. He is just 7-6 since the Marlins signed him to a five-year, $80 million contract to start the 2016 season.

LHP Wei-Yin Chen (left arm fatigue) is on pace to return to the Marlins' roster and their rotation May 12, the first day he can return from the 10-day disabled list. Chen was placed on the disabled list Friday, retroactive to Tuesday, after he complained of dead arm symptoms during his bullpen session Thursday. Manager Don Mattingly said an MRI exam administered to Chen on Friday showed no damage and that the team is planning for him to make his next start as scheduled on Friday. Chen is 2-1 with a 4.33 ERA in five starts this season.

LHP Wei-Yin Chen (left arm fatigue) was placed on the 10-day disabled list Friday, retroactive to Tuesday. Marlins manager Don Mattingly said Chen threw a bullpen on Thursday, during which he " ... kind of felt like (his arm) was dead." Mattingly is hopeful that Chen, who has yet to undergo an MRI, will miss just one start and return to the rotation once he's eligible to come off the disabled list on May 12. Chen is 2-1 with a 4.33 ERA in five starts this season.

LHP Wei-Yin Chen allowed seven hits and six runs in three innings against the Mets on Thursday, escaping with a no-decision. After a promising first start this season, Chen's ERA is now 7.00, and the Marlins' five-year, $80 million investment in him continues to look dubious.

LHP Wei-Yin Chen succeeded both on the mound and at the plate Friday night when he picked up the win by allowing one run, seven hits and one walk while striking out five in six innings in the Marlins' 7-2 victory over the Mets. Chen also had his first hit as a major leaguer in the fourth inning when he beat out an infield single. The hit snapped an 0-for-51 skid for Chen dating to his rookie season with the Baltimore Orioles in 2012. It was the fourth-longest hitless streak to open a career since 1900.

LHP Wei-Yin Chen will make his first start of the year on Friday against the Mets in New York. He was 5-5 last year in 22 starts and had a 4.96 ERA for the Marlins, while allowing 22 homers. Chen does not have a hit in his Major League career. He was 0-for-44 last season with the Marlins and is 0-for-50 overall, including six at-bats with the Baltimore Orioles from 2012-15. "That is pretty amazing he hasn't thrown one out there somehow," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. "I think it will happen. He worked hard in spring. He handles the bat well. Hopefully he will get it. He actually has a pretty good swing. I don't know if he grew up (in Taiwan) getting a chance to hit. He has had a few (balls) that have just missed down the line."

LHP Wei-Yin Chen signed a five-year, $80 million contract in January and has been a complete flop as a starting pitcher. His contract is back-loaded, so if he continues to struggle, it will be impossible to trade him without virtually buying out the entire deal. Chen was a successful starting pitcher with the Baltimore Orioles. The Marlins thought that in the NL, without a designated hitter, and in Marlins Park, a known pitcher-friendly stadium, Chen's numbers would get even better. But that didn't happen, and the soft-tossing Chen -- who went 5-5 with a 4.96 ERA in 2016 -- must make some needed adjustments. The Marlins badly need him to rebound next year.

LHP Wei-Yin Chen gave up six hits and two runs in five innings on Saturday in taking the loss in his last start of the year. He was also hitless in two at-bats and was 0-for-44 at the plate this year. Manager Don Mattingly was glad that Chen could make three starts after returning from the DL to pitch Sept. 19. "Hopefully, it helps him," Mattingly said.

LHP Wei-Yin Chen (left elbow) pitched a simulated game on Tuesday, lasting three innings. The 31-year-old Chen, a Taiwan native who hopes to return to action this month, has been a disappointment after signing an $80 million contract with Miami prior to this season. He is 5-4 with a 4.99 ERA. He hasn't had any month this season with an ERA lower than 4.25. His ERA is worse at home (5.51), but it's bad on the road, too (4.55). And he has been ever worse in the second half of the season (6.35 ERA).
