LHP Wei-Yin Chen (left arm fatigue) was slated to make a minor league rehab assignment for Class A Jupiter on Monday. But the Florida State League game was postponed due to bad weather.

LHP Wei-Yin Chen threw 12 pitches during a rehab assignment in the Marlins' Gulf Coast League affiliate game Friday in Jupiter, Fla. Chen has been sidelined with fatigue in his pitching elbow since early May.

Chen also had his first hit as a major leaguer in the fourth inning when he beat out an infield single. The hit snapped an 0-for-51 skid for Chen dating to his rookie season with the Baltimore Orioles in 2012. It was the fourth-longest hitless streak to open a career since 1900.

Chen does not have a hit in his Major League career. He was 0-for-44 last season with the Marlins and is 0-for-50 overall, including six at-bats with the Baltimore Orioles from 2012-15. "That is pretty amazing he hasn't thrown one out there somehow," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. "I think it will happen. He worked hard in spring. He handles the bat well. Hopefully he will get it. He actually has a pretty good swing. I don't know if he grew up (in Taiwan) getting a chance to hit. He has had a few (balls) that have just missed down the line."

LHP Wei-Yin Chen signed a five-year, $80 million contract in January and has been a complete flop as a starting pitcher. His contract is back-loaded, so if he continues to struggle, it will be impossible to trade him without virtually buying out the entire deal. Chen was a successful starting pitcher with the Baltimore Orioles. The Marlins thought that in the NL, without a designated hitter, and in Marlins Park, a known pitcher-friendly stadium, Chen's numbers would get even better. But that didn't happen, and the soft-tossing Chen -- who went 5-5 with a 4.96 ERA in 2016 -- must make some needed adjustments. The Marlins badly need him to rebound next year.

LHP Wei-Yin Chen gave up six hits and two runs in five innings on Saturday in taking the loss in his last start of the year. He was also hitless in two at-bats and was 0-for-44 at the plate this year. Manager Don Mattingly was glad that Chen could make three starts after returning from the DL to pitch Sept. 19. "Hopefully, it helps him," Mattingly said.

LHP Wei-Yin Chen will start Saturday against the Nationals. Since returning from the disabled list, he has given up five runs in 8 1/3 innings in his last two starts. He missed nearly two months with a left elbow sprain. He is 5-4 with a 5.02 ERA in 21 starts and is 0-1 with a 4.76 ERA in two starts in his career against Washington.
