LHP Wei-Yin Chen (elbow) will not need surgery and should be ready for spring training. Chen has been a major Marlins disappointment for two years in a row, going a combined 7-6 in those two seasons. He has three years left on what was originally a five-season, $80 million contract.

LHP Wei-Yin Chen is finished for the season and plans to visit Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles to have his left elbow examined and determine the next step. "I really didn't count on him being back this year, honestly," manager Don Mattingly said. "And I'm not really sure if he's going to be able to get back next year." Signed to a five-year, $80 million contract before last year, Chen made just 22 starts in 2016 and five in the first month of this season before going on the disabled list in early May with what was termed left arm fatigue. He returned to the mound for the Marlins this month and made four relief appearances, the last on Friday. Afterward, Chen said he had more discomfort. "We know it's there," Mattingly said, referring to a tear in his left ulnar collateral ligament. "It keeps coming back every time he gets extended a little bit. ... It's hard to say this guy is going to go out and throw 200 innings next year." But Mattingly is hopeful Chen will return to pitch for the Marlins next season. "There are guys that have pitched with it," Mattingly said. "It's just a matter of how we're going to be able to manage it. Is it going to be a five-inning type thing, 70 pitches? You hope for the best. Hopefully, he just felt a little soreness and it's just part of the process and then (he) has a full winter to build and strengthen and really be a guy next year for us. LHP Wei-Yin Chen was activated from the disabled list on Monday and made his first career relief appearances after 144 starts. Chen, who hadn't pitched since May 1 due to elbow issues, tossed a perfect inning.

LHP Wei-Yin Chen (left arm fatigue) made a minor league rehab assignment for high Class-A Jupiter on Tuesday. He pitched at Lakeland and gave up two hits and no runs in 1 2/3 innings. His start Monday was rained out. He has now made two minor league rehab appearances.
