Thu May 3 201815:05Jeter's Marlins encouraged to be less than terrible lately
MIAMI (AP) — The question for Phillies manager Gabe Kapler was posed politely, especially by Philadelphia standards, following a loss to the Miami Marlins."You're not going to beat every team every single time," a reporter said to Kapler. "But a team like the Marlins that's rebuilding, to get where you guys want to go, is it important to beat this team more often than not, considering where you guys are and where they are?"Translation: How in the world did you lose to them? That's a question for several teams of late.Derek Jeter's young Marlins were widely projected to be the worst team in the National League, and perhaps the majors, but they've won consecutive series from the Dodgers, Rockies and Phillies. And while they're still last in the NL East at 11-19, they're showing signs Jeter may be onto something with his rebuilding plan."Those are major league players over there with the capability of beating your butt," Kapler said.It didn't look that way 10 days ago, when Miami was 5-17 and... Sun Mar 25 201817:30Brinson, key piece in Yelich trade, makes Marlins' roster
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Lewis Brinson and Garrett Cooper, two players acquired during the Miami Marlins' offseason rebuilding trades, learned on Sunday they had made their first opening day rosters.A South Florida native, the 23-year-old Brinson was the key piece in the deal that sent Christian Yelich to Milwaukee. He will start in center field and hit leadoff when Miami opens its season on Thursday against the Chicago Cubs."It's going to be an emotional day, I think, for me and my parents and everybody that's kind of been with me through the ride, and everybody that saw me play Little League and grow up loving the Marlins," Brinson said. "I just wanted to play in the big leagues, but to get the opportunity to play in the big leagues for the Marlins, that's going to be pretty awesome."Cooper came to Miami in the deal that sent Giancarlo Stanton to the New York Yankees. He's expected to serve primarily as a utility player, manning left and right fields, along with first base."It's everyone's... [More]
Sat Mar 24 201815:39RHP Straily will go on disabled list for ailing Marlins
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Pitcher Dan Straily will begin the season on the disabled list, the latest setback for the depleted Miami Marlins.Straily was originally set to start the second game of the season, next weekend at home against the Cubs. But the right-hander exited Monday's minor league game early because of forearm tightness after throwing 60 pitches, and an MRI revealed inflammation."There could be nothing in there right now, no inflammation there right now, but if you wait the 10-day period, you are going to be assured that there's nothing in there," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said.Once Straily begins throwing again, he will once again have to build arm strength, making it unlikely Straily will appear in a major league game before the middle of April."There would be a buildup process," Mattingly said.Injuries incurred both before the start of spring and during Grapefruit League play could force nearly half of Miami's projected starting lineup to begin the season on rehab assignments... Thu Mar 22 201811:19Another uphill climb for Marlins as Jeter era begins
MIAMI (AP) — As the 25th anniversary of the Marlins' first game draws near, the franchise can look back on two World Series titles, a move into a new ballpark and eight seasons with prodigious slugger Giancarlo Stanton.Yet in South Florida, the baseball team inspires either apathy or antipathy."It's a complicated history, right?" Derek Jeter says.Yes, and even more so since Jeter's ownership group bought the downtrodden franchise in October. The former Yankees captain and new Marlins CEO traded away half the starting lineup, including Stanton, acquiring a passel of prospects to replenish the farm system and also reducing payroll to ensure a profit despite perennially awful attendance."This team hasn't been in the playoffs in 14 years," Jeter says. "That's the bottom line. And people weren't coming here. We need to fix that. People may disagree with some of the moves that we've made, but we're trying to fix something that has been broken."___With the franchise's latest reboot underway, here... [More]
Wed Feb 14 201817:09Mattingly begins sorting through Marlins pitching options
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Miami Marlins pitchers and catchers were still gathering in the midday sun to begin the first spring training workout Wednesday when someone asked manager Don Mattingly if he had decided on an opening day starter. After all, the Los Angeles Dodgers already announced Clayton Kershaw will start their opener."I didn't see any Kershaws on our roster," Mattingly said with a laugh. So no, Mattingly doesn't have a No. 1 pitcher yet. And three of the five jobs in the rotation are open, with more than a dozen pitchers having a shot to make the starting staff.Mattingly and his coaches will spend spring training evaluating the candidates, including several prospects acquired in trades during the Marlins' offseason payroll purge. Not among the rotation contenders to begin the season: injury-plagued left-hander Wei-Yin Chen, the Marlins' highest-paid pitcher as he enters the third season of an $80 million, five-year contract. He is not expected to be ready for opening day, but the... [More]

LHP Wei-Yin Chen (elbow) will not need surgery and should be ready for spring training. Chen has been a major Marlins disappointment for two years in a row, going a combined 7-6 in those two seasons. He has three years left on what was originally a five-season, $80 million contract.
Wed Sep 27 201705:57LHP Wei-Yin Chen finished for season and plans to visit Dr
LHP Wei-Yin Chen is finished for the season and plans to visit Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles to have his left elbow examined and determine the next step. "I really didn't count on him being back this year, honestly," manager Don Mattingly said. "And I'm not really sure if he's going to be able to get back next year." Signed to a five-year, $80 million contract before last year, Chen made just 22 starts in 2016 and five in the first month of this season before going on the disabled list in early May with what was termed left arm fatigue. He returned to the mound for the Marlins this month and made four relief appearances, the last on Friday. Afterward, Chen said he had more discomfort. "We know it's there," Mattingly said, referring to a tear in his left ulnar collateral ligament. "It keeps coming back every time he gets extended a little bit. ... It's hard to say this guy is going to go out and throw 200 innings next year." But Mattingly is hopeful Chen will return to pitch for the Marlins next season. "There are guys that have pitched with it," Mattingly said. "It's just a matter of how we're going to be able to manage it. Is it going to be a five-inning type thing, 70 pitches? You hope for the best. Hopefully, he just felt a little soreness and it's just part of the process and then (he) has a full winter to build and strengthen and really be a guy next year for us. That's what you hope for."
