Mon Feb 14 201109:23Guillen (knee) hopes to start running soon
Carlos Guillen says his surgically-repaired left knee "feels really good."
Guillen is currently working his way back from microfracture surgery. He's a major question mark for the early part of the season, but he hopes to begin running this week or next. Will Rhymes, Danny Worth, Scott Sizemore, Ramon Santiago, and Ryan Raburn could all factor in at second base if Guillen has to start the season on the disabled list.

Thu Jan 20 201101:03Carlos Guillen might miss start of season
When asked Wednesday night about Carlos Guillen's status for Opening Day, Manager Jim Leyland said, "I don't think he's going to be ready to start."
Interestingly, Leyland admitted that "out of all the positions, that's one where we're pretty comfortable." His named five players as potential replacements: Will Rhymes, Danny Worth, Scott Sizemore, Ramon Santiago, and Ryan Raburn. If you're a 35-year-old coming off microfracture surgery, your plate appearances have dropped each year since 2007, and your manager suggests you're the club's most easily replaceable player, then the season is not looking too bright at this point. You might take a chance on Guillen as a late-round flier in your fantasy league, but you'd be better off drafting another middle infielder with more upside.

Sat Jan 1 201112:44Carlos Guillen looking likely for opening day
Carlos Guillen (microfracture surgery) is looking "more and more likely" for opening day, according to Tigers MLB.com beat writer Jason Beck.
At the end of the season, GM Dave Dombrowski said he foresaw Scott Sizemore and Will Rhymes competing for playing time at second base, with Guillen also getting the occasional start there. However, with reports on Guillen's knee apparently better than expected, he's likely to be the starter there if healthy. But, given his injury history and the fact that, at 35, he's slated for full-time middle infield duty for the first time since 2007, that's a big "if."

Sat Sep 18 201012:27Guillen needs microfracture surgery on knee
Carlos Guillen's knee surgery Friday was of the microfracture variety.
Microfracture surgery is about the worst kind possible, and it will keep Guillen from performing any activities for four months. A return date hasn't officially been announced, but given Guillen's previous injury history, a return to his previous form certainly isn't a given. He's a risky fantasy proposition for 2011.

Fri Sep 10 201017:50Guillen set for surgery, out for rest of year
Carlos Guillen will have a "diagnostic surgical procedure" on his left knee and is officially out for the rest of the season.
Not surprising. He finishes up the year with a .273/.327/.419 batting line to go along with six home runs and 34 RBI. The 34-year-old Guillen is under contract for $13 million next season.

According to Jason Beck of MLB.com, a team trainer said that Carlos Guillen (knee) is likely done for the rest of the season.

Mon Sep 6 201011:56Guillen in danger of missing rest of season
Carlos Guillen (knee) is in danger of missing the rest of the season.
Guillen suffered a deep left knee contusion when Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner slid into his body three weeks ago. He spoke with MLB.com's Jason Beck on Monday and said the soreness is still lingering. "Maybe worse," he added. The clock is ticking and he can probably be dumped in playoff leagues.

Sun Sep 5 201009:44Leyland in the dark on Guillen
Tigers manager Jim Leyland isn't sure when Carlos Guillen (knee) will be ready to come off the disabled list.
When asked if Guillen could be activated Monday, Leyland said, "Haven't heard a word. There's not much rehabbing with something like that (deep left knee contusion). It's just a matter of getting the soreness out of there." Guillen has been out since mid-August, and we can probably assume that since his manager hasn't heard any updates on him, he must still be a little ways off from a return.

Mon Aug 23 201023:13Tigers' Guillen still feeling pain in knee
Carlos Guillen said he is still feeling "sharp pain" in his left knee.
"Right now, it's not good," said Guillen, who added that he'll likely need at least two more weeks before he resumes baseball activities. The veteran infielder was originally expected to miss 2-3 weeks with the injury, so it's hard to call this a setback. Will Rhymes will continue to fill in at second base and is worth pursuing in AL-only leagues.

Tigers placed 2B Carlos Guillen on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 17, with a deep bruise in his left knee.
As of this morning, it appeared that he would avoid the disabled list, however the Tigers apparently didn't want to go with 24 men for the next few days. This is Guillen's third trip to the disabled list this season. Look for him to return in September.

An MRI revealed no structural or ligament damage in Carlos Guillen's left knee.
"I was fine [Monday night]. Everything was normal," Guillen said Tuesday. "But this morning, when I woke up, I felt a little bit different. I knew there was going to be a little swelling, because he got me pretty good." Now that the MRI came back clean, it's safe to consider him day-to-day.

Mon Aug 9 201010:04Carlos Guillen activated from disabled list
Tigers activated 2B Carlos Guillen from the 15-day disabled list.
Guillen is expected to start at second base on Monday against the Rays and man the position for the rest of the season. He was placed on the disabled list in late July with a calf strain and a .280/.337/.427 batting line. With position flexibility and a little pop, he's not a bad fantasy option.
Thu Aug 5 201009:48Guillen close to rehab assignment
If Carlos Guillen (calf) feels good running the bases Thursday, he'll be close to a rehab assignment.
He'll likely be ready for the assignment this weekend if everything goes smoothly. Guillen is eligible to be activated from the DL on Monday, and it seems possible that that could happen.

Wed Aug 4 201019:32Guillen set for rehab assignment this weekend
Carlos Guillen (calf) is on track to begin a minor league rehab assignment this weekend.
Guillen ran the bases on Wednesday and has already taken batting practice. He was placed on the disabled list July 25 with a calf strain and is probably being rushed a bit, but the Tigers are confident that the veteran can handle it. "I think he'll be fine," Detroit's head athletic trainer, Kevin Rand, said Wednesday. "Everything went well. He [has] looked smooth."

Tigers placed 2B Carlos Guillen on the 15-day disabled list with a right calf strain.
Guillen re-aggravated the calf injury Saturday night in the loss to the Blue Jays. It's not clear at this point how much time he is expected to miss. Scott Sizemore should get the bulk of the time at second base while Guillen is out, and Will Rhymes was brought up to provide depth.
