RHP Mike Pelfrey collected his second victory of the season on Tuesday despite allowing four runs on 12 hits in 5 1/3 innings. He got a key double play with the bases loaded during the second inning to minimize the damage. Pelfrey had gone winless in his previous four starts. He has a 5.02 ERA but remains the No. 4 starter because the Tigers don't have many options to replace him.

RHP Mike Pelfrey remains a candidate to start Tuesday against Miami although he worked 4 1/3 innings of relief Friday night against Cleveland. "I want to wait and see how everything goes (with RHP Anibal Sanchez on Saturday). Right now he's scheduled to go Tuesday. If for some reason he can't go, he could always go Wednesday." "We haven't discussed it but we have a lot of flexibility because of the starters we have up here," Ausmus said. "We can manipulate (who starts) pretty easily. We can manipulate Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, so to speak. (Daniel) Norris could come back, we could slot him in before Pelfrey or in between Pelfrey and Zimmermann. There's a lot of things we could do." There was no uptick in Pelfrey's velocity coming out of the bullpen over him starting. He was 91-93 with his fastball.

RHP Mike Pelfrey is having his next start pushed back to Tuesday but will pitch out of the bullpen as soon as he's able. Pelfrey started Monday night. "We'll probably use him out of the 'pen for a couple days," manager Brad Ausmus said. "An inning here or there just as an emergency. He is 0-1 with an ERA of 8.62 in his last three starts, and gave up five runs in five-plus innings in his last start against the Texas Rangers on Saturday. He is 0-4 with an ERA of 6.23 this year.

Pelfrey drew heavy boos after allowing home runs to the first two batters he faced, Rougned Odor and Nomar Mazara. Pelfrey, who signed a two-year, $16-million contract this offseason, is holding onto his starting spot mainly due to a lack of other options. "I'm embarrassed," he said. "I'm going to go back and watch video and figure something out," Pelfrey said. "But I need to be a lot better than I have been. It's frustrating on my part. It is two games in a row that should have been a lot worse, I think, with all that traffic on the basepaths." Pelfrey is winless over his past 16 road starts since winning May 14, 2015, at Detroit while with the Twins. He is 0-7 with a 5.54 ERA over his past 11 starts.

RHP Mike Pelfrey will start the series finale at Kauffman Stadium. He is 1-1 with a 4.74 ERA in five career starts at Kansas City. In three 2015 starts against the Royals, Pelfrey went 1-0 with a 2.20 ERA while with the Twins.
