The Phillies have Mike Schmidt, who is in camp as a guest hitting instructor, working with Brown to adjust his swing, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Schmidt wants Brown to focus on a line drive approach toward the middle of the field rather than using an uppercut swing. Brown hit just .235/.285/.349 with 10 home runs last year after an All-Star 2013 season. The Phillies will give him a chance to return to form this season as their starting right fielder.
Fri Jan 16 201515:48Brown agreed to one-year
Brown agreed to a one-year, $2.5 million contract with the Phillies on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com reports.
Brown followed up his All-Star campaign in 2013 with a nightmare of a season in 2014, as he hit just .235/.285/.349 with 10 homers and 63 RBI in 144 games. His .269 BABIP and 7.9% HR/FB rate were below his career norms, but it's hard to imagine Brown rebounding to anywhere near his 2013 levels. Still, Brown should be afforded fairly consistent playing time in 2015, with a move to right field expected following the Marlon Byrd trade to Cincinnati.
