RHP Shelby Miller (right index finger) is schedule to make his second rehab start Tuesday at Class A Visalia before a possible return to the starting rotation, manager Chip Hale said. Miller retired the first 15 batters he faced, giving up two hits in six shutout innings of a rehab start for Class A Visalia last Thursday. "Facing A ball guys, so you can't really base too much off of what you do," Miller said, "but more so past the numbers, more of how I felt. I felt good mechanically. I threw a lot of strikes and got ahead in the count. That was really the main thing. Everything felt a little bit smoother." Miller is likely to make his second rehab start with Visalia, also, while getting his pitch count up to about 100. "Just keep refining everything, making sure his stuff is crisp," Hale said. "Get his pitch count up again to where we want it.

RHP Shelby Miller (right index finger) is scheduled to make a rehab start Thursday for Class A Visalia, his first rehab start since going on the disabled list retroactive to May 25. He threw 60 pitches in an extended spring training game Saturday. "I'm ready to make that start, then see where I'm at, and be ready to get back here," Miller said. "In a high-A league, when hitters are taking serious at-bats, that will show me more how I am doing more than the last one." Arizona special assistant Dave Duncan watched Miller's bullpen session last week. The two have known each other from their time in the St. Louis Cardinals' organization. "He gave me some tips, but nothing dramatic that I had to change big time," Miller said. "It was nice to have him there, someone who has seen me since 2009. Miller is scheduled to throw about 85 pitches Thursday and is likely to need another rehab start before returning, manager Chip Hale said. "I'm sure we want to try to get him to 100" pitches during his rehab time, Hale said. Miller 1-6 with a 7.09 ERA in 10 starts.

RHP Shelby Miller (sprained finger) was placed on the disabled list Friday because of the injury that cropped up when he scraped his hand on the mound during several deliveries in an April 16 start at San Diego. He has made seven starts since. "It is time to get him 100 percent," manager Chip Hale said. "His feel for the ball has not been as good as he want it. We need to get him right and back into the number two hole for us. We still believe he can be that after this injury is healed. We need to get it to full resolution is what I'm saying. He's obviously pitched with it and thrown hard with it, but he hasn't had the control that he needs." Miller is 1-6 with a 7.09 ERA and a 1.88 WHIP.

RHP Shelby Miller apologized to manager Chip Hale immediately afterward about his quickish exit from the mound during a pitching change in sixth inning on Friday. Miller left the mound before Hale came to the rubber to take him out in a 3-1 game, three batters after Miller gave up a three-run homer to Giants 2B Joe Panik. "We talked right after," Hale said. His character as a teammate and as player through the tough times he has had at the start of this year, that (quick exit) is not who he is. I know that." RHP Shelby Miller pitched five scoreless innings while inducing a career-high three double play grounders before giving up three runs on a three-run homer on a 3-0 pitch to Giants 2B Joe Panik in the sixth inning. "The last thing I'm thinking is he was going to be swinging three-oh," Miller said. "I was just trying to get back in the count. Just throw a strike there and left it down the middle." Miller was replaced with two outs in the sixth, and he left the mound just as manager Chip Hale was arriving. "You don't like to see it, because for me it is almost like you are getting shown up," Hale said. "But I understand he is upset about giving up the home run." Miller: "Just frustrated about giving up three runs in one inning," said Miller, who induced a career-high three double play grounders. Miller has given up 21 earned runs and seven homers in 25 1-3 innings in five starts at Chase Field this season, losing four. He tripled and scored in the last of the fifth for the D-backs' only run.
