Mets optioned OF Collin Cowgill to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Cowgill hit a grand slam on Opening Day, but he batted just .130/.149/.196 over 18 games since then. Andrew Brown has replaced him on the roster.

Cowgill, 26, appeared in 38 games last season as a part-time outfielder and batted .269/.336/.317 over 116 plate appearances. He should be used in a similar role with the Mets. The trade also clears a spot on Oakland's 40-man roster for the recently-signed Hiroyuki Nakajima.

Cowgill appeared in 32 games with Oakland before losing his roster spot to injury in mid-July. He could push for a platoon behind Josh Reddick, but his role in September doesn't figure to be prominent.
