Fri Aug 3 201800:20Ziegler becomes first Arizona player to use bullpen cart
PHOENIX (AP) — The Diamondbacks brought back an old tradition this season with a bullpen cart. One problem: None of the Diamondbacks wanted to use it.Brad Ziegler changed that when he entered a game against the San Francisco Giants in the seventh inning Thursday night, drawing cheers from the hometown fans.Only a handful of opposing players used the cart during games, though Jake Diekman used it to switch clubhouses after being traded from the Texas Rangers to Arizona in the middle of a two-game series this week.Ziegler, Arizona's one-time closer, returned to the team at the trade deadline in a deal with the Miami Marlins.
Wed Aug 1 201801:59Nationals set team scoring record, rout Reyes, Mets 25-4
WASHINGTON (AP) — In the highest-scoring game in franchise history, Daniel Murphy hit two early home runs and the Washington Nationals kept pouring it on against emergency reliever Jose Reyes and the New York Mets in a 25-4 rout Tuesday night.Trea Turner, who apologized before the game to his teammates for homophobic and racially insensitive tweets he sent several years ago, had four of Washington's 26 hits. Pitcher Tanner Roark (5-12) hit a three-run double during a seven-run first inning. The Nationals set the team scoring mark dating to their days as the Montreal Expos in 1969. It was the Mets' most-lopsided loss in their 57-season history, worse than a 26-7 pounding by Philadelphia in 1985.Reyes made the first pitching appearance of his career, and the 35-year-old infielder got tagged for home runs by Matt Adams and Mark Reynolds in a six-run eighth. Throwing a fastball in the mid-80s mph and a curve in the upper 40s, Reyes gave up five hits and walked two.Reyes also plunked Ryan Zimmerman... [More]
Tue Jul 31 201820:39Trade tornado: Dozier, Archer among 15 swaps on deadline day
For Brian Dozier, getting traded meant a dash to the airport and a long trip to Dodger Stadium. For Jake Diekman, it was a lot easier — he simply rode the bullpen cart from one clubhouse to the other at Chase Field.Chris Archer, Jonathan Schoop and a bunch of relievers moved on deadline day, a flurry of 15 swaps Tuesday before time ran out to make deals without waivers. The trade market kept spinning at a dizzying pace. Every team except San Francisco made at least one deal since the All-Star Game, with Tampa Bay swinging seven.Archer, a two-time All-Star, hugged teammates at Tropicana Field before heading to Pittsburgh. He is 3-5 with a 4.31 ERA in 17 starts this season, and joins a Pirates club that has pushed back into the playoff race even after trading away Gerrit Cole and Andrew McCutchen in the offseason."They're super-hot right now, and they want me," Archer said. "I'm excited to be part of the organization that wants me, part of a rich baseball history, a hard-working community.... [More]
Tue Jul 31 201820:09D-backs look to bolster bullpen with pair of deadline deals
PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks brought back a familiar sidearm right-hander and acquired a left-hander who happened to be just down the hall in a pair of trade deadline moves designed to bolster the bullpen.Brad Ziegler, who pitched for Arizona from 2011 to 2016 and holds several club relief records, was traded back to the Diamondbacks by Miami in exchange for minor league right-hander Tommy Eveld.Arizona also picked up left-hander Jake Diekman from the Texas Ranger for minor league pitcher Wei-Chieh Huang. It didn't take long for Diekman to show up at his new locker. He gathered his belongings from the visitor's clubhouse and accepted a Diamondbacks offer to give him a ride in the bullpen cart to his new home."They asked," he said, "and I was like 'Yeah, I don't want to carry all of my stuff."Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said the moves were made to supplement the bullpen but would not change the roles of the "big three" of Yoshihisa Hirano, Archie Bradley and closer Brad Boxberger.The... Wed Jul 25 201820:53Rangers' Hamels struggling at time he could be trade target
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Cole Hamels was coming off a no-hitter when he got traded to the Texas Rangers three years ago. With Tuesday's non-waiver trade deadline approaching and the Rangers now at the bottom of the AL West and far out of contention, the left-hander would seem to be a target for contending teams.Except the 2008 World Series MVP is in a stretch that he calls "probably the worst of my career so far."In his last home start for Texas before the deadline, Hamels (5-9) allowed seven runs on Monday night against Oakland. It was the third time in four July games he allowed seven runs, including at Baltimore when he got only two outs on 41 pitches on a day four runs were unearned."He's a competitor, man, and I think the way everything's happened this year, it's affecting him. He's a guy that his whole career he's been in contention," Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus said Wednesday. "I think he's kind of like thinking too much out there while he's pitching right now."Along with the extended... [More]
