Sat Jul 20 201300:13Gregg avoids damage, earns 18th save
Kevin Gregg danced around a double and a walk in tossing a scoreless ninth inning and earning his 18th save Friday against the Rockies.
Nobody was more relieved than Chicago's front office. Gregg entered the game having allowed nine runs over his last 10 appearances, spiking his ERA from 0.77 to 2.97 and damaging his trade value. Gregg never was going to sustain that level of success, and his struggles may end up a blessing for fantasy owners; Gregg's regression toward the mean may end up keeping him on Chicago's roster and in the ninth inning.

Sat Jul 13 201322:52Kevin Gregg notches 17th save of the season
Kevin Gregg allowed a run on a pair of walks and a single against the Cardinals on Saturday, but managed to escape with his 17th save of the season.
What many would've deemed unthinkable at the beginning of the season, Kevin Gregg has once again established himself as a reliable closer. He has now converted 17 of his 19 save opportunities on the season while posting a stellar 1.95 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 35/13 K/BB ratio in 32 1/3 innings. Unfortunately for fantasy owners, being as dominant as he has been has done nothing but increase his trade value, making in increasingly likely that he'll be dealt before the trade deadline, and most likely to a team where he would serve in a setup role.

He walked a batter and struck out another. Gregg, 16-for-18 in save conversions, boasts a spectacular 1.72 ERA and 34/11 K/BB rate in 31 1/3 total innings this season. He has complete job security, but may be dealt later this month.

Sun Jul 7 201320:39Gregg blows second save of the season
Kevin Gregg blew his second save of the season on Sunday against the Pirates.
Nursing a 3-2 lead in the ninth inning, Gregg coughed up a solo homer to Starling Marte. Gregg also walked a batter and struck out two, escaping the frame with no further damage inflicted. Chicago went on to win in the 11th inning. Gregg, 15-for-17 in save conversions, still owns a spectacular 1.78 ERA and 33/10 K/BB rate in 30 1/3 total innings this season and is not in danger of losing his job as the Cubs' closer.

Sat Jun 29 201323:05Gregg blows first save Saturday vs. Mariners
Kevin Gregg blew his first save of the season on Saturday night against the Mariners.
Gregg had been a perfect 12-for-12 in save opportunities. Tasked with protecting a one-run lead, the veteran right-hander yielded a walk to Henry Blanco and then a game-tying RBI base hit to Endy Chavez. Gregg still has a cool 1.71 ERA in 26 1/3 total innings this season and is not in danger of losing his job as the Cubs' closer.

Gregg, 35, has posted a promising 1.42 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 26/7 K/BB ratio in 25 1/3 innings this season for the Cubs. He should draw interest from multiple teams as the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline approaches.

Tue Jun 25 201318:36Cubs getting 'multiple hits' on Kevin Gregg
ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Cubs have received "multiple hits" on Kevin Gregg.
It's no surprise that the Cubs want to take advantage of Gregg's surprising year to see what they can get for him via trade. The veteran reliever has converted all 11 of his save chances this season and boasts a 1.11 ERA and 0.95 WHIP. Contenders are likely viewing him as a seventh or possibly eighth inning guy.

Tue Jun 18 201323:16Kevin Gregg gets save No. 10 Tuesday
Kevin Gregg nailed down his 10th save of the season in Tuesday's win over the Cardinals.
Gregg came on in relief of Jeff Samardzija with one out and two on in the ninth and allowed an RBI single to Yadier Molina. He then induced what turned out to be the game-ending double play when pinch-runner Shane Robinson was called out for interference. He's capable of blowing up at any time, but Gregg has plenty of job security with a 0.81 ERA and 0.99 WHIP while going 10-for-10 in save chances.

Mon May 27 201302:14Gregg continues perfect season, earns victory
Kevin Gregg earned the win by tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings in Sunday's 10-inning victory in Cincinnati.
The veteran right-hander is a perfect 6-for-6 in save opportunities and hasn't allowed a run in 13 1/3 innings this season. This is a guy who was released by the Dodgers in early-April and didn't have a job on April 13. The much-maligned Gregg has risen to fantasy relevance once again and figures to remain there, as Chicago doesn't have many alternative options if the 34-year-old runs into problems down the road.

Wed May 8 201311:34Sveum names Kevin Gregg as Cubs' closer
Cubs manager Dale Sveum confirmed Wednesday that Kevin Gregg will serve as the team's closer.
Sveum has declined to make anything official until now, but he finally acknowledged Wednesday that Gregg has earned the opportunity. The veteran right-hander is a perfect 5-for-5 in save opportunities and has now allowed a run in 7 1/3 innings this season. We don't think his run of success will last long, but he should be owned in all fantasy formats. Kyuji Fujikawa will serve as a set-up man when he returns from the disabled list.

Tue May 7 201322:53Gregg nails down fifth save, Cubs beat Cards
Kevin Gregg tallied his fifth save of the season Tuesday in the Cubs' defeat of the Cardinals.
Gregg struck out Pete Kozma, induced a pop-up from Matt Adams and got Matt Carpenter to line out. The veteran right-hander has not allowed a run in 7 1/3 innings this season and obviously needs to be owned in all fantasy leagues.

Mon Apr 29 201323:52Kevin Gregg picks up fourth save
Kevin Gregg made it 4-for-4 in save opportunities after getting four outs against the Padres on Monday.
Gregg struck out two. He's gone four straight outings now without walking a batter, which is quite unusual for him. It's unusual enough for him to go four straight without allowing a run. The Cubs and fantasy owners might as well enjoy it while it lasts.

Sat Apr 27 201322:14Gregg collects third save, Cubs defeat Fish
Kevin Gregg tallied his third save of the season Saturday as the Cubs topped the Marlins 3-2.
Gregg retired all three batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth inning, fanning one. The 34-year-old right-hander has not allowed a run in five appearances with the Cubs and is 3-for-3 in save opportunities. While the good times are doubtful to last, he needs to be owned right now in all standard mixed fantasy leagues.

Fri Apr 26 201322:15Kevin Gregg notches second save for Cubs
Kevin Gregg retired the Marlins in order in the ninth inning on Friday, preserving a two-run lead and notching his second save of the season.
Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, this in no way means that Kevin Gregg is now the closer for the Cubs. Carlos Marmol wasn't available after working three of the previous four days. With Kyuji Fujikawa expected back from the disabled list soon, don't go wasting too much of your free agent budget on Gregg.

Tue Apr 23 201323:01Gregg converts 1st save opportunity for Cubs
Kevin Gregg recorded his first save for the Cubs on Tuesday, striking out two Reds to preserve a 4-2 victory in 10 innings.
Two weeks ago Gregg didn't have a job, but now he's closing out games for the North Siders. With Carlos Marmol still struggling and Kyuji Fujikawa sidelined, Gregg will likely be given the next opportunity as well. If he shows some flashes of his former ability -- Gregg saved 37 games as recently as 2010 -- he has a chance to lock down the gig for the near future. In deep mixed leagues, he's definitely worth a flyer.

Tue Apr 16 201316:44Cubs add Kevin Gregg to MLB bullpen
Cubs purchased the contract of RHP Kevin Gregg from Triple-A Iowa.
Gregg was signed to a minor league contract just two days ago but is being rushed to the major leagues to assist the Cubs' battered bullpen. The 34-year-old seems unlikely to get save opportunities in Chicago, but anything can happen given the lack of talent in that 'pen.

Sun Apr 14 201311:55Cubs ink Kevin Gregg to minor league deal
Cubs signed RHP Kevin Gregg to a minor league contract.
He'll report to extended spring training initially but should be ready to be added to the Cubs' bullpen before long. He would surely be used in low-leverage situations initially, but with the mess that is the Cubs' bullpen, Gregg could eventually work his way into the later innings.
