Sun Jun 15 2014 | 10:00 | Erik Johnson really struggling at Triple-A |
Erik Johnson has posted a 6.46 ERA and allowed 27 hits and 15 walks over 23 2/3 innings since being demoted to Triple-A Charlotte. |
The White Sox were hopeful that Johnson could make a quick fix of things in the minors before rejoining the rotation, but obviously it hasn't worked out that way. "I don't see the games; you see the numbers,'' manager Robin Ventura said. ``You have people that are watching, and you get reports on him, but when you just see the numbers, it does make you scratch your head because you know he has talent. We've seen it. We've seen it up here, so to get that combination back where he has the confidence, the location, the ability to do it, that's when you get that call back up." |

Erik Johnson allowed just one hit but two runs -- one earned -- over his five innings of work in Sunday's win over the Rangers. |
It was one of the stranger lines you'll see, as Johnson gave up more runs than hits in the outing. That was largely due to the five free passes issued on the day. Johnson also brought in another run with a wild pitch. The win was Johnson's first of the year. He'll look for his second win Friday against the Rays. |

Johnson's only mistake came on a fourth-inning solo homer to Daniel Nava. Overall, Johnson allowed three hits, walked two, and struck out nine. He had shaky results in his first two starts of the season, so it was a welcome sight to see him dominate the Red Sox. Johnson will face the Rangers next. |

Sun Jan 26 2014 | 13:47 | Johnson 'penciled in' to White Sox rotation |
White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper said Sunday that Erik Johnson is "penciled in pretty firmly" into the club's rotation. |
Johnson had some ups and downs in his cup of coffee with the White Sox last season, posting a 3.25 ERA but also a 1.55 WHIP over five starts. However, the 24-year-old is the team's top pitching prospect, having put up a pristine 1.96 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in 24 outings between Double- and Triple-A in 2013. Johnson's ceiling isn't super high, but he could be a solid mid-rotation starter for the Pale Hose as soon as this season. |

Erik Johnson pitched decently in Saturday's victory over the Royals, allowing three runs on five hits over his 5 1/3 innings. |
The 23-year-old rookie right-hander walked three and struck out four on the evening. All of the damage against him came via the long ball, with Mike Moustakas and Billy Butler each swatting one over the wall. Johnson fared pretty well in his five start audition with the White Sox at the end of the season, compiling a 3.25 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 18/11 K/BB ratio over 27 2/3 innings. With his strong minor league track record and strikeout potential, Johnson could develop as a popular sleeper option in next spring's drafts. |

Tue Sep 10 2013 | 23:52 | Johnson beaten again as Sox fall to Tigers |
Erik Johnson allowed six runs -- two earned -- over 3 2/3 innings in a loss to the Tigers on Tuesday. |
Johnson gave up seven hits and three walks but he didn't get any help from his defense, either, as two errors and a passed ball meant only two of the six runs were earned. In two starts, the right-hander has now allowed six unearned runs. He's got more promise than he's shown thus far, but it's tough to bet on him at this point. He'll face the Indians on Sunday. |
