ARLINGTON, Texas -- Leonys Martin returned to Texas a happy man, his career having been given the change it seemed to so desperately need.He left even happier with big contributions to a season-opening series victory against his former teammates. "Getting off to a good start. Nice to see him get some momentum, too."Martin, who never met expectations in three full seasons in Texas, was traded to Seattle in November.Against the Rangers to start the season, he went 4-for-10 with three runs scored, two doubles and three RBIs.He acknowledged Monday that it felt a little weird coming back to Texas wearing a different uniform, but "it is what it is.""Just trying to stay focused in every single at-bat and try to hit the ball hard, that's it," Martin said. "I'm happy to wear a Seattle Mariners jersey."

CF Leonys Martin has been all but handed the starting job since the Mariners acquired him from Texas in November, but he's coming off a season in which he hit just .219 and lost his starting job with the Rangers. Martin's defense was a big reason why the Mariners traded for him, but he's still got a lot to prove with the bat.

OF Leonys Martin and RHP Anthony Bass were acquired by the Mariners from the Rangers on Tuesday in exchange for RHP Tom Wilhelmsen, OF James Jones and a player to be named."With Leonys Martin, I think we get one of the premier defensive center fielders in baseball," Seattle GM Jerry Dipoto said. "He's been among the best in the league over the last three years. This a guy we targeted from the get-go."Martin, 27, hit .219/.264/.313 with five homers, 25 RBIs and 14 stolen bases for Texas this year. Martin was sent to Arizona on Wednesday to gear up for instructional league action, Stefan Stevenson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Martin had his right hamate bone in his hand removed near the end of August, ending his season prematurely. With potentially stiff competition for the starting center field job coming in the form of the speedster Delino DeShields, Martin will need to show he's fully healthy in order to have a chance to compete for the spot come spring training.
Tue Aug 25 201519:26Leonys Martin: (Wrist) To Undergo Surgery Wednesday
Martin will have his right hamate bone removed Wednesday and will not be able to hit again this season, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Evan Grant reports.
The Rangers said Martin would be available as a pinch-runner/defender in two weeks, but it would be 4-to-6 weeks until he could return to being a full-time player, so his season is essentially over for fantasy purposes. Martin's long-term future with the team is tough to peg, as Delino DeShields and Lewis Brinson could each challenge him for playing time in center field next season.
Tue Aug 25 201517:26Leonys Martin: (Wrist) To Undergo Surgery Wednesday
Texas Rangers outfielder Leonys Martin will have the hamate bone removed from his right wrist Wednesday, and he will not be able to hit again this season, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Texas Rangers outfielder Leonys Martin will have the hamate bone removed from his right wrist Wednesday, and he will not be able to hit again this season, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Martin will reportedly still be able to serve as a pinch-runner or defensive replacement in two weeks, but he has been given a full recovery timetable of 4-to-6 weeks. Martin's role was murky even before the injury, as Delino DeShields had usurped the starting center field position due to his superior offensive production atop the lineup. Martin's stellar defense could eventually still earn him a call-up when rosters expand in September, but it is unclear what the team's plans will be. He is at least two weeks away from any sort of baseball activity, which will give the team a little more time to decide whether to bring him up or not.
Mon Aug 17 201518:09Martin (hand) moved to 7-day DL at Triple-A Round Rock
Martin (hand) has been moved to the 7-day DL at Triple-A Round Rock, TR Sullivan of MLB.com reports.
Maritn will have his hand reexamined Tuesday, and the team believes there's a chance he could have a broken bone. As such, he'll hit the DL, clearing a spot on the Round Rock roster for top prospect Nomar Mazara, who was called up Monday.

Martin will visit a hand specialist, and may have a broken hamate bone in his right hand.
If Martin does indeed have a broken hamate bone, it will likely end his 2015 campaign. If it turns out to be something less, there's still a chance he'll be back before the season ends, and the 27-year-old could be a candidate for a September recall if healthy.
Tue Aug 4 201516:46Leonys Martin: Optioned To Triple-A
Martin was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Playing time had largely dried up for Martin -- he started just three of the team's last 16 games -- with Delino DeShields serving as the everyday center fielder for the Rangers. Ryan Strasborger was recalled in a corresponding move and will serve as the team's fifth outfielder for now, while Martin will look to get back on track in the minors and salvage what's been a very disappointing campaign.

Sun Jul 19 201511:34Martin out of lineup Sunday against Astros
Martin is out of the lineup Sunday against the Astros.
Martin is sitting out a second straight game Sunday with lefty Dallas Keuchel on the mound. With the outfielder holding down a measly .261 on-base percentage for the season, it appears manager Jeff Banister may have finally lost his patience. Unless Martin suddenly turns things around, look for him to remain little more than a part-time player for the Rangers to begin the second half, with Delino DeShields set to pick up the larger portion of the at-bats in center field.
Sat Jul 18 201516:30Martin out of lineup for Saturday's game against Houston
Martin is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against Houston.
With a right-hander in Scott Feldman on the mound for Houston, Martin will take a seat Saturday. Martin is batting just .198 against right-handed starting pitching this season and has nearly as many strikeouts (33) as he does hits (34) against them. The Rangers will reinsert Shin-Soo Choo back into right field and move Josh Hamilton to the other corner outfield spot.
Sat Jul 11 201516:54Martin not in lineup for Saturday's game against Padres
Martin is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Padres, John Blake of the Rangers' official site reports.
Delino DeShields has taken over as the regular center fielder, leaving Martin as one of baseball's better fourth outfielders. Martin may still have a long-term future with the team as an everyday player, as his glove and speed largely make up for his mediocre bat.
Wed Jul 8 201516:25Martin remains out of lineup Wednesday against Diamondbacks
Martin remains out of the lineup Wednesday against the Diamondbacks.
With Delino DeShields back from the disabled list, Martin's starts in center field will likely drop dramatically moving forward. He's now out of the lineup for a third straight day, and could continue to sit, especially when lefties are scheduled. However, it appears to be a soft platoon that favors DeShields, as he'll start Wednesday against the right-handed Jeremy Hellickson.
Tue Jul 7 201516:52Martin not in lineup for Tuesday's game against Diamondbacks
Martin is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks, John Blake of the Rangers' official site reports.
With Josh Hamilton (groin) returning to the lineup, the Rangers don't have room for both Martin and Delino DeShields in the outfield. The two platooned in center field earlier this season, but DeShields has already made a strong case to take some of Martin's playing time against right-handers. With Martin still struggling badly at the plate, DeShields may have a shot to become an everyday starter.
Sun Jul 5 201516:22Martin out of lineup Sunday against Angels
Martin was out of the lineup Sunday against the Angels, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Martin is faring similarly against same-handed pitching this season (.586 OPS vs. lefties, .597 vs. righties), but neither mark is close to the .689 OPS he posted in 2015. The disappointing performance could result in Martin losing at-bats in the weeks to come, especially now that promising rookie Delino DeShields (hamstring) is back from the DL.

Martin is out of Saturday;s lineup against the Blue Jays, per the Rangers VP of Communications John Blake.
Martin's playing time was already a concern due to his bat, but the Rangers are now plugging in large person Joey Gallo to fill in for him. This shows just how much Martin has to worry about when Josh Hamilton and Delino Deshields.
