The Brewers are expected to talk to Yuniesky Betancourt's agent again at the winter meetings in Dallas.

The Brewers are interested in the possibility of bringing Betancourt back, but he's not the only shortstop on their radar. Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel says the Brew Crew is "checking in" on Jimmy Rollins, Alex Gonzalez and Rafael Furcal. Betancourt is a Type B free agent, so the Brewers would net a sandwich round draft pick if he signed elsewhere.

Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com speculates that the Brewers may attempt to bring Yuniesky Betancourt back as their regular shortstop next season.

Betancourt has good pop for a shortstop, but he's poor defensively and has a career on-base percentage of .292. It's possible they could look to bring him back on a lesser deal. If they don't the Brewers will have to look outside the organization for a solution at shortstop, as they don't have any real in-house options.

Simply put, it would be stunning if they exercised the option.

Heading into Game 4 of the NLDS, Betancourt had only one hit in 10 at-bats over three games. Since then, Yuni is 6-for-12 (.500) with two doubles, a home run, fives runs scored and three RBI over Milwaukee's last three games. Betancourt produced a typically horrendous .252/.271/.381 triple slash line in the regular season, but he's posted an eye-popping .500/.500/1.500 line over six postseason games in 2011.

Most impressively, Yuni also drew a walk. Betancourt has driven in 68 runs while lashing 43 extra-base hits this season, but is also sporting a typically horrendous .254/.273/.385 triple slash. It would be far from surprising if the Brewers decide to exercise their $2 million buyout on Betancourt this offseason.

His solo homer in the bottom of the second inning proved to be the difference in this one. Betancourt is now batting .382 with four homers and 21 RBI over his last 23 games. He'll likely soon return to being terrible, but feel free to ride out the hot streak if you need an injury fill-in for Hanley Ramirez, Stephen Drew or Jose Reyes at shortstop.

Yuniesky Betancourt had three singles in four at-bats in Thursday's loss to the Cardinals.

The much-maligned shortstop is suddenly swinging a hot bat, sporting a .380 batting average in 92 second-half at-bats. Though his .287 OBP for the season is still hideous, Betancourt does have his average up to a respectable .270 to go along with eight homers and 50 RBI, making him a viable middle infield option in fantasy.

It was the first multi-homer game of his career. Betancourt entered the game the owner of a ridiculously bad .239/.257/.344 triple slash through his first 89 games, prompting Milwaukee to hit the phones trying to find a shortstop upgrade via trade. Maybe all the rumors sparked something in him. He still isn't a viable fantasy player.

Betancourt had just four June RBI through 55 at-bats coming into this evening. For the season, his triple slash is now a typically horrific .228/.251/.328.

The multi-hit game was his sixth in 12 starts, upping his average from .189 all the way to .265. He's still drawn only five walks in 26 games, but he'll be doing what the Brewers hoped for if he can just keep hitting in the .260-to-.270 range.

Betancourt has made a nice first impression with the Brew Crew by hitting .375 this spring, and he's even drawn three walks, which is usually a couple months' worth for him. His 16 homers came out of nowhere last season and he's more likely to hit half that many in 2011.
