Fri Aug 24 201216:46Report: Joe Saunders clears waivers
John Gambadoro of 620 KTAR in Phoenix reports that Joe Saunders has cleared waivers.
This means Saunders can now be traded to any team. The Diamondbacks are still in the race, but could be motivated to move him in order to make room for some of their youngsters. The 31-year-old southpaw has a 4.22 ERA in 21 starts this year and will hit free agency this winter.

Tue Aug 21 201200:58Joe Saunders surrenders nine runs in loss
Joe Saunders was lit up for nine runs in 3 2/3 innings by the Marlins on Monday night.
Maybe Saunders should have taken a week off after injuring his pitching thumb on a comebacker last time out. It's the first time in his career that he's allowed nine earned runs. He gave up eight earned runs on three occasions, all while he was with the Angels. His ERA jumped from 3.70 to 4.22.

Joe Saunders (thumb) expects to make his next scheduled start.
Saunders injured the thumb on his pitching hand when he tried to field a comebacker Wednesday. "It's just a little black and blue; it's fine," Saunders said Thursday. "It feels a lot better than last night. Last night it was a little numb when I tried to throw that next inning. Now it feels much better." The lefty will throw his normal between-starts bullpen session Saturday before officially being cleared for his next outing.

Joe Saunders pitched seven innings and allowed three runs -- two earned -- in defeating the Pirates on Thursday.
Saunders hasn't received much run support lately, but Jason Kubel helped him out with a pair of two-run homers today. It's just the second time this season that he's allowed as many as three runs and won. He's 6-8 with a 3.52 ERA in 19 starts.

He'll bring a 3.62 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 76/28 K/BB ratio into his Saturday start in Philadelphia.

Joe Saunders pitched seven innings of two-run ball in a defeat of the Rockies on Tuesday.
He struck out nine and allowed just three hits and one walk. The only damage he sustained was a pair of solo homers off the bat of Michael Cuddyer. In three starts back from the disabled list, Saunders has allowed eight runs over 19 innings, roughly equivalent to his production prior to hitting the shelf. Saunders holds a 3.51 ERA through 16 starts this season and remains a mediocre option in mixed leagues.

Sat Jul 14 201215:58Saunders takes loss in return from DL
In his first start back from the disabled list, Joe Saunders allowed four runs (three earned) over six innings Saturday against the Cubs.
Saunders was decent in his return, giving up eight hits while striking out four and walking none. However, the Diamondbacks' offense simply couldn't get anything done against Ryan Dempster. Saunders holds a 3.52 ERA through 14 starts this season and remains a mediocre option in mixed fantasy leagues. He'll get the Reds next week.

Joe Saunders (shoulder) allowed five runs (three earned) in 4 1/3 innings Sunday in a rehab start with the Diamondbacks' Arizona League affiliate.
Saunders gave up three hits while walking five and striking out seven. While his line was pretty uneven, the good news is that he didn't have any issues with his shoulder. Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson expects him to return from the disabled list to start Saturday against the Cubs. Josh Collmenter is likely to be sent back to the bullpen.

Wed Jul 4 201221:33Joe Saunders to make rehab start Sunday
Joe Saunders (shoulder) will make a minor league rehab start Sunday.
Where he'll pitch is yet to be determined. Saunders thought he was ready after a 51-pitch simulated game Tuesday, but the D'Backs want to give him a chance to knock off some rust in the minors first. He'll rejoin the rotation just after the break if Sunday's outing goes well. "He's not real happy about it but I think that's the safe way to do it," manager Kirk Gibson said. "We want him back for the long term. We all want him back in the rotation but we think this is the way we're going to go."

Wed Jul 4 201208:58Saunders (shoulder) throws in simulated game
Joe Saunders (shoulder) declared himself ready to rejoin the Diamondbacks' rotation after throwing 51 pitches in a simulated game Tuesday.
Saunders has been sidelined for a little over two weeks due to a strained left shoulder. The Diamondbacks could have him throw a rehab start first, but his return isn't far off. Josh Collmenter or struggling rookie Trevor Bauer will be bumped from the rotation.

Fri Jun 29 201208:47Joe Saunders to return around All-Star break
Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers expects Joe Saunders (shoulder) to return "if not before then right after the All-Star break."
"He's feeling great," Towers said. "I think he must have slept on it wrong or had a little bit of a dead arm. He's responded well. The doctors said his strength tests are all good." It's not clear when Saunders will begin a rehab assignment, but it's clear that he's on the right track. The D'Backs had been considering trading him, but that might have gone out the window following Daniel Hudson's season-ending injury.

Sun Jun 24 201212:04Saunders lands on DL with strained shoulder
Diamondbacks placed LHP Joe Saunders on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 17, with a strained left shoulder.
Let the Trevor Bauer speculation begin. Saunders was a late scratch from Friday's start, with the D'Backs saying he was unable to get loose, but evidently the problem centered around his shoulder. It's poor timing, as Arizona would like to showcase the left-hander for a possible trade.

Sat Jun 23 201218:25Saunders wants to make his next start
Joe Saunders said he wants to make his next start.
Saunders, a last-minute scratch from Friday's scheduled start against the Cubs, hasn't talked to manager Kirk Gibson or GM Kevin Towers about the situation. Josh Collmenter started for him on Friday. Arizona may be inclined to play it conservatively with Saunders, because they are reportedly shopping him.

Joe Saunders held the A's to two runs (one earned) on seven hits in six innings Sunday, improving to 4-4 in Arizona's 4-3 win.
He struck out five and walked two. Quality just four times in eight starts since May 1, Saunders - as expected - has revealed himself to be little more than a streaming option in 12-14 team mixed leagues. He'll get the Angels in Anaheim next weekend.

Thu May 24 201201:29Joe Saunders picks up third win
Joe Saunders allowed four runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings of Wednesday's 11-4 win over the Dodgers, improving to 3-3 on the season.
He struck out seven and walked one. Not an awful outing, but Saunders has now allowed at least four runs in three of his past four starts, and watched his ERA explode from 1.24 on May 2 to 3.79. The real Joe Saunders is slowly but surely standing up. He'll bring a 1.30 WHIP and 36/14 K/BB ratio into his Tuesday start in San Francisco.
