Sat Mar 7 201510:52Shane Victorino: Battling General Soreness
Victorino is battling some general soreness and will be out a couple days, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Victorino was scratched from his scheduled appearance in one of Saturday's split-squad games and will be given a couple more days to let the soreness subside, but the report notes that it's not believed to be anything serious. The 34-year-old's ability to take batting practice on the field Saturday would seem to suggest as much. That said, Victorino has had problems staying on the field in recent years and this is a somewhat troubling sign at this stage of spring training.

Victorino had been on a list of participants scheduled to play in one of Boston's split-squad games Saturday, but is not in the starting lineup, the Providence Journal reports.
We'll be waiting to see if there's more to this than just a random day off for Victorino, who had back surgery in 2014.

Victorino will start in right field Tuesday when Boston kicks off its spring training with a game against Northeastern University, the Providence Journal reports.
Manager John Farrell said earlier in camp that a healthy Victorino will be his starting right fielder and so far, he's handled the training without restriction. The starting lineup also includes Mookie Betts, not Rusney Castillo, in center field.
Sat Feb 28 201509:26Victorino candidate to hit leadoff
Victorino is a candidate to hit leadoff, WEEI.com reports. Red Sox manager John Farrell was discussing leadoff options Friday, mentioning Victorino as a possibility along with Brock Holt and Mookie Betts.
Betts appears to be the best-suited option, but Farrell threw some uncertainty on that notion earlier this week when he said Victorino, if healthy, would be the starting right fielder. In that event, Betts would likely come off the bench. Farrell added the leadoff hitter is "going to be dependent on the opposing pitcher on a given day." We expect the starting right field / leadoff hitter jobs to play itself out over the course of spring training.
Thu Feb 26 201518:46Victorino will return to switch-hitting in 2015
Victorino will return to switch-hitting in 2015, WEEI.com reports.
Victorino has almost exclusively hit from the right side since late in the 2013 season, but he seems to have trouble hitting right-handers from both sides of the plate. While the Red Sox expect Victorino to serve as the starting right fielder this season, it wouldn't be surprising to see the veteran lose a significant number of at-bats when the team faces right-handed pitching. The Red Sox have excellent depth in the outfield, including righty-mashing Daniel Nava.
Tue Feb 24 201512:54Victorino (back) full-go for Wednesday's full-squad workout
Victorino (back) is a full-go for Wednesday's full-squad workout, The Boston Globe's Pete Abraham reports.
The Red Sox already said that, health permitting, Victorino will start in right field. Still, it wouldn't be surprising to see the 34-year-old lose at-bats against right-handed pitching, with Boston sporting a remarkably deep group in the outfield.
Fri Feb 20 201512:44Victorino will start in right field for Boston if he's healthy
Victorino will start in right field for Boston if he's healthy, Tim Britton of the Providence Journal reports.
As a bonus, Farrell also said Victorino would likely bat lead-off if he's in the lineup, unless Mookie Betts finds a starting spot somewhere else. Victorino excelled in the second spot for the Red Sox in 2013, but you have to wonder if his age (34) could begin to catch up to him in health or production.
Thu Feb 19 201508:20Victorino (back) arrived at training camp Wednesday
Victorino (back) arrived at training camp Wednesday, one week before he was scheduled to report, ESPN Boston reports.
Victorino is coming off back surgery and understands the situation he's facing. There's a log-jam in Boston's outfield and he'll need to win the starting right field job. His main competition at this point is Mookie Betts, a converted infielder who started just eight games in right field last season, but is the team's best choice to lead off. Victorino says he's been working out, taking live batting practice and running without any setbacks.

Victorino (back) reports his offseason training program is going according to plan, WEEI.com reports. "So far full go. Picking up swinging this week. Throwing every day, and lifting, etc. So far, so good," said Victorino.
We'll get to see more of Victorino once spring training ramps up. It will be during the spring when we get an idea of Boston's plan for its outfield. Is Victorino going to start? Where does he fit in the mix of Hanley Ramirez, Rusney Castillo and Mookie Betts? As it stands right now, Victorino is unlikely to get a full season of at-bats.
Fri Oct 31 201414:24Victorino (back) reinstated from 60-day disabled list Friday
Victorino (back) was reinstated from the 60-day disabled list Friday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
Victorino was expected to be ready for the start of spring training, and his activation all but guarantees that will be the case. He had only 123 at-bats in 2014, collecting just two home runs and 12 RBI.
Mon Sep 29 201413:57Victorino (back) progressing as expected
Victorino (back) is progressing as expected.
Victorino is on track to being fully recovered once spring training begins. The right fielder missed much of the 2014 season, seeing only 123 at-bats with two home runs and 12 RBI. With months of rehab ahead of him, he has some ways to go before becoming an effective everyday player once again.
Mon Sep 8 201415:51Victorino (back) transferred to 60-day DL on Monday
Victorino (back) was transferred to the 60-day DL on Monday.
With Triple-A pitching prospect Matt Barnes joining the big league club Monday, the Sox will move Victorino to the 60-day DL to clear room on the 40-man roster. Victorino, who underwent surgery last week, is expected to be ready for spring training.

Victorino had successful back surgery Tuesday and is expected to be ready for spring training, the Boston Herald's Michael Silverman reports.
He will need 3-to-4 months of rehab to recover from the surgery, but the team is optimistic that he'll be fully recovered by next spring. It will be interesting to see what the Red Sox do in the offseason, with a variety of outfield pieces on the books for the 2015 season, in addition to talented youngsters who will need somewhere to play.
Tue Aug 5 201412:46Victorino (back) will undergo surgery in Los Angeles on Tuesday
Victorino (back) will undergo surgery in Los Angeles on Tuesday, the Boston Herald reports.
The surgery will mean the end of Victorino's injury-plagued season, during which he's played only 30 games while battling hamstring and back ailments. In 123 at-bats, Victorino slashed .268/.303/.382 with two home runs and 12 RBI. His absence over the remaining two month of the season should clear the way for Yoenes Cespedes to be the everyday right fielder.
Sat Aug 2 201413:39Shane Victorino: Set To Visit Spine Specialist
Victorino will visit a spine specialist in Los Angeles next week for a second opinion, Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com reports.
Victorino's removal from Wednesday's game was initially deemed precautionary, but it seems the issue is far more serious than first thought. Apparently, Victorino's dealing with a slipped disk in his back, and while he will seek a second opinion, McAdam notes that Victorino "seems resigned to the fact that surgery [is] likely." If surgery is indeed required, Victorino will almost certainly miss the rest of the season. Yoenis Cespedes is expected to take on the everyday role in right with Allen Craig (ankle) in left.
Fri Aug 1 201416:11Victorino (back) will be placed on disabled list
Victorino (back) will be placed on the disabled list, the Providence Journal reports.
Victorino was removed from Wednesday's game for precautionary reasons, and it appears he's dealing with a nagging back injury. He'll head back to the disabled list, enabling recent acquisitions Yoenis Cespedes and Allen Craig to log plenty of time in right and left field, respectively.
Thu Jul 31 201418:39Victorino expected to miss "some time" with minor back issue
Victorino is expected to miss "some time" with a minor back issue, WEEI.com reports.
Victorino was removed from Wednesday's contest after the third inning, and GM Ben Cherington confirmed Thursday that he'll likely miss at least a few contests. While his removal from Wednesday's game was largely precautionary, back injuries are among the most easily aggravated, so the Red Sox certainly won't rush him back. Victorino's absence will allow newly acquired Yoenis Cespedes to adjust to right field, while Allen Craig will start in left.
Thu Jul 31 201406:08Victorino removed for pinch hitter as precaution Wednesday night
Victorino was removed for a pinch hitter as a precaution Wednesday night, ESPN Boston reports.
Red Sox manager John Farrell said he noticed a change in Victorino's gait when he went out the field following his final at-bat of the night. Farrell has been managing Victorino's playing time since he was activated from the disabled list.
Sat Jul 26 201415:22Shane Victorino not in Saturday's lineup
Shane Victorino not in the Red Sox starting lineup on Saturday.
Victorino is getting a breather after playing in four consecutive games. The Red Sox want to give him a rest here and there in order to keep him healthy for the remainder of the season. Expect him to return on Sunday.

Fri Jul 25 201422:54Victorino homers, drives in two Friday
Shane Victorino went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI against the Rays on Friday.
Victorino hit a solo homer in the second inning -- his first home run since May 21 -- and later added an RBI single in the sixth. The 33-year-old is now hitting .435 (10-for-23) over six games since coming off the disabled list. It's been a long wait, but he's worth owning in most mixed leagues now that he's finally healthy.
