Tropeano was scratched from his scheduled start for Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday, Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports.

The Angels are in need of a starter for Friday's series opener against Texas with Jered Weaver (hip) still not 100 percent, and this would suggest Tropeano will draw the assignment. The 24-year-old Tropeano threw six scoreless innings in his Angels debut back in April, but he's managed only modest numbers in 11 starts for Salt Lake (4.43 ERA, 1.30 WHIP) despite averaging better than a strikeout per inning.

Tropeano was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday.

Starting in place of Matt Shoemaker (personal), Tropeano held the A's to just five hits over six scoreless innings to earn his first win as a member of the Angels. He'll head back down with Shoemaker expected back for his next turn, but Tropeano could return if C.J. Wilson experiences any more elbow issues.

Tropeano gave up five hits and one walk while striking out five in six shutout innings to pick up the win over the A's on Thursday.

Tropeano was effective in his spot start, yielding one walk and striking out five less than 48 hours after learning he was headed to the majors. Manager Mike Scioscia isn't sure what the Angels will do with Tropeano after his second major-league victory, since their rotation is full. However, Scioscia hinted that Tropeano may be moved to the bullpen.

Tropeano will start Thursday against the Athletics, Joe Stiglich of CSN California reports.

Tropeano was recalled by the Angels on Wednesday to replace Matt Shoemaker, who is on the bereavement list. He'll instead toe the rubber a bit sooner than expected, filling in for C.J. Wilson (elbow). If Wilson's absence ends up being more than one start, Tropeano's performance Thursday will likely determine whether or not he gets the vacant rotation spot.

Tropeano's addition to the big league roster comes as a corresponding move as Matt Shoemaker was placed on the bereavement list Wednesday. His stay with the big league team could be a brief one, but he'll serve as another option out of the bullpen.

Drew Rucinski will take the ball as the fifth starter Tuesday against the Rangers, but there has been no indication that this is a permanent situation, as he threw 33 pitches out of the bullpen Saturday.

The Angels are expected to open the season with a four-man rotation, but they may still need Tropeano or Andrew Heaney at some point in April, as Garrett Richards (knee) isn't quite a sure thing to be ready by the middle of the month. Optimism regarding Tropeano should still be tempered, with Richards seemingly on track for a mid-April debut.

The Angels will "most likely" open the season with a four-man rotation, which could mean that Tropeano will begin the season in the minor leagues, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.

Tropeano started strong, retiring nine of the first 10 batters he faced before a fielding error and some spotty control caught up with him in the fourth. Tropeano had a chance to separate himself from Andrew Heaney in the race for a rotation spot with a solid outing Wednesday, but the fact that neither man has performed well this spring leaves some question regarding which two from the group of Heaney, Tropeano and Hector Santiago will open the year as a member of the starting five.

Tropeano will throw in the "B" game against the Rangers on Tuesday, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.

Tropeano will throw in the back field for the second time in as many rotations Tuesday, while Andrew Heaney takes the hill for the official contest. While Tropeano and Heaney entered camp competing for a rotation spot, The fact that Tropeano has been relegated to the "B" game once again, combined with his struggles this spring, may be a solid indication that Heaney will edge him out for a place in the starting five to begin the season.

Tropeano struggled in a "B" Game against the Cubs on Thursday, allowing five runs (three earned) in 3.1 innings.

The fact that Tropeano was on the backfield while his primary competition for a roster spot, Andrew Heaney, threw in the official contest was likely already a sign that that he was losing ground, and the poor performance could not have helped matters. Two pitchers from the group of Heaney, Tropeano, and Hector Santiago will enter into the rotation to begin the season due to injuries, but it looks as though Tropeano would be the odd man out of if the season began tomorrow.

Tropeano was hit hard in a Cactus League outing against the Reds on Monday, allowing three runs (two home runs) on three hits in three innings.

Meanwhile, Tropeano's primary competition for a rotation spot, Andrew Heaney allowed just one run over three innings. Backed with a sterling minor-league resume, Heaney was likely considered the favorite to take the spot heading into camp, meaning Tropeano will need to get on track in order to have a shot at a permanent place in the starting five. While he could potentially emerge as a contender for the spot left open while Garrett Richards recovers from knee surgery, it's worth noting that Hector Santiago threw two scoreless innings of work in the Cactus League opener against the Brewers on Thursday.

Angels GM Jerry Dipoto said Wednesday that Tropeano will compete for a rotation spot in spring training, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.

Dipoto acquired a couple arms Wednesday, Tropeano from Houston and lefty reliever Cesar Ramos from Tampa as well. Tropeano put together an outstanding season at Triple-A Omaha in 2014, posting a 3.03 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 8.7 K/9 over 124.2 innings, and at worst he's a strong insurance policy for Garrett Richards (knee).

Tropeano was acquired by the Angels along with Carlos Perez in exchange for Hank Conger.

Tropeano made his major league debut last season, striking out 13 with a 4.57 ERA in four games. He had a strong season in Triple-A before getting called up, going 9-5 with a 3.03 ERA and 120 strikeouts to just 33 walks, so he could compete for a big league roster spot in spring training.

Tropeano (1-3) took the loss in Sunday's 2014 finale, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks with one strikeout over five innings against the Mets.

Tropeano will take the start from Brett Oberholtzer that day, but what will happen after that remains unclear. The likely scenario is that the Astros will go with a six-man rotation for the remainder of the season, but they also may just be giving the other starters an extra day of rest this turn through.
