Wed Jul 4 201219:11Kyle Farnsworth takes loss to Yankees
Kyle Farnsworth walked four and was charged with three runs in one-third of an inning Wednesday in a loss to the Yankees.
It was simply shocking that manager Joe Maddon let Farnsworth continue even after he had walked the bases loaded in a 3-1 game. He was pulled until after the fourth walk forced in a run. It was just Farnsworth's second appearance back from his elbow injury. He was really good last year, but the Rays obviously erred in letting him return to high-leverage situations right away.

It's a little longer than we were anticipating, but it could be worse. Rays manager Joe Maddon said he'll use a committee at closer until Farnsworth returns, unless someone steps up. Joel Peralta would be the best guess to claim the job outright, but Fernando Rodney and J.P. Howell are among the other possibilities.

Farnsworth isn't sure how long he'll be sidelined, but it doesn't sound like a serious injury. Either way, he will begin the season on the 15-day disabled list. Rays manager Joe Maddon is likely to go with a closer-by-committee with the closer role, but Joel Peralta is the one to target in mixed leagues. Fernando Rodney and J.P. Howell are among the other possibilities.
