Kyle Farnsworth blew a one-run lead on Saturday in the Rays' extra-innings loss to the Royals.
Farnsworth entered the game with the comfort of a 4-3 lead, but he issued a walk and allowed a game-tying RBI double to Alex Gordon. It was the first run that the Tampa Bay closer had allowed in the month of July. The Royals went on to win in the 10th inning courtesy of an Eric Hosmer walkoff RBI base hit.

Kyle Farnsworth recorded his 19th save in Thursday's win over the Yankees.
The Farns allowed a one-out single to Russell Martin but wound up getting Jorge Posada, Eduardo Nunez and Curtis Granderson to swing through strike three. He had blown two of his last four save opportunities but has converted 19 of 22 chances on the year. With a 1.82 ERA and 0.96 WHIP, Farnsworth has been one of the steadier ninth inning men in baseball this season.

He's certain to regress as the season goes along, but he's firmly entrenched at the top of the bullpen. Farnsworth has locked down 17 out of his first 19 save opportunities this season.

Kyle Farnsworth gave up a run on one hit in a non-save situation Thursday against the Red Sox.
In his defense, the run came off the bat of hot-hitting Adrian Gonzalez. Farnsworth retired the other three batters on fly outs to center field, though Darnell McDonald hit his pretty deep. The Rays' closer has yielded a run in each of his last two appearances, though his 1.78 ERA and 0.79 WHIP keep him firmly entrenched at the top of the bullpen.

In fact, he's blown only one opportunity all year. Tampa Bay's closer started hot, posting a 1.00 ERA in nine April innings, and hasn't cooled off. He's 1-0 and 4-for-4 in save conversions in May, posting a 2.84 ERA over eight appearances this month. Farnsworth isn't striking out as many batters as you'd like, whiffing nine batters in 15 1/3 innings, but he's walked just one hitter all season. The Rays signed Farnsworth to a one-year, $3.25 million contract over the winter with an option for 2012. It's looking like a brilliant move.

The Rays entered the season saying they would be using a closer by committee, but it's be obvious from the outset that the job is Farnsworth's to lose. He's performed well, boasting a 1.69 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 5/0 K/BB ratio while converting all three of his save chances. With Jake McGee struggling, The Farns' job security appears to be pretty safe at the moment.

The Rays rallied to take the lead with a five-run ninth and they turned to The Farns to retire the final three hitters. Most figured it would be Farnsworth to get the first shot in what is expected to be a committee approach at closer, but we still like Jake McGee over the long haul.

Kyle Farnsworth left Thursday's game against the Astros after bumping the same spot in his left knee that he hurt during Monday's game.
Farnsworth threw only one pitch and exited after fielding a grounder hit by Anderson Hernandez. Fortunately he left only for precautionary reasons and told teammates that he was OK.

Kyle Farnsworth hyperextended his left knee during Monday's game against the Yankees.
Farnsworth came up limping after fielding a bunt in the fifth inning, but stayed in the game and completed the inning. He said after the game that he feels OK and plans to take things "day by day." Farnsworth figures to play an important part in Joe Maddon's closer-by-committee this season.

Kyle Farnsworth gave up three runs in his inning Friday against the Pirates.
Farnsworth had been sharp this spring, striking out four in three scoreless innings. As long as he bounces back from this, he figures to enter the season as the favorite for saves in the weakened Tampa Bay bullpen.
