SEATTLE (AP) — Spencer Turnbull pitched the fifth no-hitter in the majors this season, sending the Detroit Tigers to a 5-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night. Turnbull, who led the big leagues with 17 losses two years ago, had never gone more than seven innings in any of his previous 49 starts over three seasons. The five no-hitters through May 18 match the 1917 season for the most in baseball history by that date. Turnbull’s no-hitter was the eighth in Tigers history and their first since Justin Verlander’s in Toronto on May 7, 2011. The 28-year-old right-hander got a great defensive play from third baseman Jeimer Candelario in the seventh inning and then struck out Mitch Haniger in the ninth to end it. Turnbull (3-2) struck out nine and walked two. Turnbull threw 117 pitches, 77 for strikes. Haniger was the only batter to hit the ball hard enough to threaten a base hit. Wed May 19 202100:18Hunter gets key hit as Mets beat Braves 4-3
ATLANTA (AP) — The New York Mets got homers from Jonathan Villar and Tomás Nido, an unlikely hit from Tommy Hunter and strong performances by a string of relievers to beat the Atlanta Braves 4-3 Tuesday night. Villar hit a two-run shot in the third inning, and Nido won it for the Mets in the ninth with a tiebreaking drive into the left-field seats off struggling Braves closer Will Smith (0-4). One night after being struck in the face by a 95 mph fastball, Kevin Pillar brought New York’s lineup card to home plate before the game, a gesture that brought a huge sigh of relief to both teams. With his face swollen and badly bruised, Pillar still managed a smile as he shook hands with the four umpires and Braves coach Walt Weiss, who gave him a warm pat on the shoulder. Austin Riley and Freddie Freeman homered for Atlanta. Marcell Ozuna tied it for the Braves with a two-out, broken-bat single in the eighth off Jeurys Familia (2-0). Mon May 17 202102:58LEADING OFF: Lester returns to Wrigley, Phils cool off
A look at what’s happening around the majors today: ___ WELCOME BACK Jon Lester is set to start for the Washington Nationals at Wrigley Field after spending the past six seasons with the Chicago Cubs. The 37-year-old lefty is 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA in three starts for his new team. Lester was a two-time All-Star for the Cubs and went 3-1 in the 2016 postseason as they won a most elusive championship. Lester pitched in relief in Game 7 of the World Series and his catcher was David Ross, now the Cubs manager. “Our guys are excited and I’m sure Jon is excited,” Ross said. “You are always excited to see a guy you made history with, plus there will be some bragging rights on the line.” TIMEOUT A day off might give the Phillies a break to cool off following a dugout confrontation between manager Joe Girardi and second baseman Jean Segura. Segura made two errors in Sunday’s 10-8 loss to Toronto. At one point, Segura had to be restrained by coach Dusty Wathan. “I didn’t actually see it,” Philadelphia... [More]

It was Ohtani’s second homer of the series and stopped Boston’s three-game winning streak. Raisel Iglesias (2-2) pitched a scoreless eighth and Mike Mayers got his second save. BLUE JAYS 10, PHILLIES 8 DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) — Television cameras showed a confrontation in the dugout between Phillies manager Joe Girardi and second baseman Jean Segura, who committed two errors. Sat May 8 202101:55Miley pitches MLB's 4th no-hitter of season, 2nd in 3 days
CLEVELAND (AP) — Wade Miley pitched baseball’s second no-hitter in three days — and fourth already this season — leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 3-0 win Friday night over the Cleveland Indians, who were no-hit for the second time in a month. Miley (4-2) relied on breaking pitches and his experience of 11-plus major league seasons to baffle the Indians and throw Cincinnati’s first no-hitter since Homer Bailey in 2013. The left-hander shook off an 83-minute rain delay to start the game and followed Baltimore’s John Means, who no-hit Seattle on Wednesday,. Joe Musgrove threw San Diego's first no-hotter on April 9. Five days later, Chicago White Sox left-hander Carlos Rodón blanked the Indians. Arizona’s Madison Bumgarner pitched a seven-inning no-hitter against Atlanta on April 25, but that one isn’t recognized as official because it didn’t go nine innings. This is the earliest in a calendar year there have been four no-hitters since 1917, when the fourth was thrown on May 5 and the fifth... [More]

Fri May 7 202123:05Nats use 6-run inning to beat Yankees 11-4
NEW YORK (AP) — Washington burst ahead in a six-run eighth inning that included three errors and Josh Harrison’s three-run homer, and the Nationals stopped a three-game skid by beating the New York Yankees 11-4. With the score tied at 3 on a chilly night, Yadiel Hernández lined a single against Jonathan Loaisiga (3-2) that right fielder Aaron Judge allowed to bounced off his glove for his first error since Sept. 30, 2018. Third baseman DJ LeMahieu made a throwing error on Victor Robles' sacrifice, Trea Turner hit a go-ahead single and Harrison homered for a 7-3 lead. Kyle Schwarber hit a run-scoring single off Luis Cessa and shortstop Gleyber Torres allowed Yan Gomes’ grounder to bounced past his glove for a run-scoring error. Kyle Finnegan (2-0) pitched a scoreless seventh for the win. Fri May 7 202117:25Harper, Segura return for Phillies to start against Braves
ATLANTA (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies got a boost with Jean Segura coming off the 10-day injured list and Bryce Harper returning from a sore left wrist. Harper and Segura are starting in Friday night's NL East matchup against the Atlanta Braves. Segura is starting at second base in his return from a right quad strain. Harper missed four consecutive games with a sore left wrist. The Phillies are in first place after a four-game sweep of Milwaukee. Manager Joe Girardi said he hopes the healthy lineup adds to the team's momentum. “I’m excited to have them both back,” Girardi said before Friday night's game. “They both before they went down were swinging the bat great. Obviously they’re staples in our lineup that we’ve been missing.” Girardi said Harper “felt comfortable enough that he was ready to go” but couldn't say the right fielder has fully recovered from his wrist injury. “I think it feels pretty good but it’s like what happens if he takes a swing and it’s funny,” Girardi said, adding “Just hope he doesn’t fall backward again.” Outfielder Mickey Moniak, who was hitting .120, was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley to clear a roster spot for Segura. ___ More AP baseball: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Fri Apr 30 202123:23Phils top Mets 2-1 in bench-clearing, trash-talking opener
Phillies reliever José Alvarado thumped his glove and gestured at Dominic Smith after a strikeout ended a rally. Smith pulled off his helmet and the Mets left fielder seemed ready to fight back against the jabbering pitcher until both teams spilled out of the dugout and broke up the dust up before punches were thrown. Miguel Castro responded with a pair of inside heaters that had Phillies slugger Rhys Hoskins momentarily steamed. The Mets and Phillies turned the eighth inning into a bench-emptying, trash-talking, finger-pointing commotion that spiced up a routine game -- and could ignite more sparks this weekend -- in the Phillies’ 2-1 win on Friday night. “He made a big pitch, he got me out and he wanted to express his emotions,” Smith said. Mets manager Luis Rojas said Alvarado — who hit Michael Conforto and riled up Smith and the Mets with gestures earlier this month — was to blame. “You could tell that it was instigating. he was trying to get his attention, trying to start things,"... Fri Apr 30 202122:53Phils top Mets 2-1 in bench-clearing, trash-talking opener
The Mets and Phillies turned the eighth inning into a bench-emptying, trash-talking, finger-pointing commotion that spiced up a routine game -- and could ignite more sparks this weekend -- in the Phillies’ 2-1 win on Friday night. The benches cleared in the eighth inning when Phillies reliever José Alvarado jawed at Dominic Smith after he struck him out to end a rally. Alvarado -- who riled up the Mets with gestures earlier this month -- mixed it up with New York but nothing came of the heated words. Mets reliever Miguel Castro then chased Rhys Hoskins down the line in the bottom of the inning and the benches again emptied. The fireworks fizzled faster than a Mets’ rally: New York has scored an MLB-low 58 runs, including two or fewer in nine of 20 games this season. Sam Coonrod worked a scoreless ninth for his first save. Chase Anderson swung and missed at a passed ball on a third strike that let two runs score, and he tossed five solid innings to lead the Phillies. Odúbel Herrera received... [More]
Mon Apr 19 202123:09Belt, Gausman lead Giants and Kapler over Phillies 2-0
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Brandon Belt and Kevin Gausman made sure Gabe Kapler could raise a glass in his return to Philadelphia. Belt hit a two-run homer, Gausman niftily pitched out of trouble in six innings and the San Francisco Giants beat the Phillies 2-0 Monday night. Kapler became the first manager in major league baseball history to start his career 200-200. Kapler, who was 161-163 as Philadelphia’s manager in 2018-19, was booed when he brought out the lineup card. “My feelings are I’m just focused on doing a good job with the San Francisco Giants," Kapler said. His coaches and a few players, including Gausman, came into his office and had a drink together to celebrate his 200th win. “Hopefully it was a good win for him coming back to Philly,” Gausman said. Gausman (1-0) allowed six hits, walked four and struck out five. He lowered his ERA to 2.45. “This was a battle for Gaus,” Kapler said. “This was one of the more impressive starts I’ve seen from him because he had to grind through... [More]

Wed Apr 14 202101:50Red Sox top Twins in snowy game delayed after Minn. shooting
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Rafael Devers homered for the fourth straight game and the streaking Boston Red Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 4-2 on a snowy Tuesday in a series opener moved back following the fatal police shooting of a Black man in a nearby suburb. Hunter Renfroe hit a solo homer and Bobby Dalbec added a pair of RBI doubles as Boston won its seventh in a row after losing its first three games of the season. Monday’s game was postponed due to safety and sensitivity concerns in the Twin Cities after the police shooting a day earlier of Daunte Wright during a traffic stop. The Twins held a moment of silence for Wright prior to Tuesday’s game. Snow flurries fell for most of the game and it was 33 degrees for the first pitch. That made for the third-coldest start at Target Field, the record being 27 degrees on April 7, 2018. Adam Ottavino (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief.
