Cardinals released RHP Kyle McClellan. |
McClellan was expected to be non-tendered, so the Cardinals just got the move out of the way early. The 28-year-old right-hander was limited to just 18 2/3 innings this season prior to undergoing shoulder surgery, but he shouldn't have a problem finding a new opportunity. |

Kyle McClellan (elbow) has begun a throwing program. |
McClellan was placed on the disabled list in mid-May with a partially-torn ulnar collateral ligament. The right-hander has already been told by Dr. James Andrews that he doesn't need Tommy John surgery. He should return at some point in August if he can avoid setbacks. |

Sat Jun 30 2012 | 10:25 | Cardinals transfer McClellan to 60-day DL |
Cardinals transferred RHP Kyle McClellan from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list. |
It's just a procedural move, as McClellan isn't expected back until August and the Cardinals needed a spot on the 40-man roster for Barret Browning. McClellan is currently on pace to begin a throwing program in early July. |

Mon Jun 18 2012 | 09:15 | McClellan on track for early-July throwing |
Kyle McClellan (elbow) is currently on pace to begin a throwing program in early July. |
McClellan was diagnosed in mid-May with a small tear of his ulnar collateral ligament. He paid a visit to Dr. James Andrews and was told that he does not need Tommy John elbow surgery, so rest and rehab is the route that the right-handed setup man is taking. McClellan could be back in the major leagues at some point in August. |

Tue May 22 2012 | 17:12 | McClellan (elbow) doesn't need Tommy John |
Kyle McClellan (elbow) won't throw for 6-8 weeks. |
McClellan was told this week by Dr. James Andrews that he does not need a second Tommy John reconstructive elbow procedure, but that doesn't mean the right-hander is guaranteed to return this year. He's been diagnosed with a strained flexor pronator and a small tear of his UCL. It's going to be a long road of rehab. |

Fri May 18 2012 | 18:05 | Kyle McClellan has small tear of UCL in elbow |
Kyle McClellan has been diagnosed with a strained flexor pronator and a small tear of his ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. |
McClellan left Thursday's game due to the injury and was examined by Cardinals' head team physician Dr. George Paletta on Friday. The tear is small enough where he'll attempt to rehab the elbow for a couple weeks in hopes of avoiding a second Tommy John surgery. Either way, he'll be out of action indefinitely. |

Fri May 18 2012 | 08:12 | Kyle McClellan injury could be serious |
The Cardinals are worried that Kyle McClellan's elbow injury might be serious. |
McClellan admitted after leaving Thursday's game that he's dealt with "persistent discomfort and swelling" in his elbow for a couple weeks, which made "performing even routine household activities cause throbbing in the area." The righty has already had one Tommy John surgery, and it sounds like another may be coming. Stay tuned. |

Tue Mar 13 2012 | 11:43 | Cards, O's discussed Kyle McClellan trade |
FOX Sports' Jon Paul Morosi has confirmed that the Cardinals and Orioles discussed a trade involving right-hander Kyle McClellan at one point this spring. |
That was back when the Cardinals were trying to clear payroll room for free agent Roy Oswalt. But no swap was ever finalized, and it's doubtful St. Louis will want to give up potential rotation depth now with Chris Carpenter (bulging disc) still ailing. McClellan, 27, posted a 4.19 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 141 2/3 innings last season. It's not clear whether discussions are still active. |

Sun Jan 29 2012 | 16:45 | Cards working with O's to free payroll space |
ESPN's Jim Bowden reports that the Cardinals and Orioles continue to hammer out terms of a deal that would open enough payroll for St. Louis to sign Roy Oswalt. |
This jives with a Sunday report by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the Cardinals are aggressively shopping right-hander Kyle McClellan. McClellan agreed to a $2.5 million contract earlier this month after posting a 4.19 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 141 2/3 innings last year. The 27-year-old can function as either a starter or reliever. In Baltimore, he'd likely take a rotation spot. |

Sun Jan 29 2012 | 15:49 | Kyle McClellan on the trade block |
Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Cardinals are "actively shopping" right-hander Kyle McClellan. |
The Cards want to sign veteran Roy Oswalt and are trying to clear payroll space in order to make it happen. Strauss lists the Orioles, Padres and Diamondbacks as having interest in McClellan, who avoided arbitration with the club by agreeing to a $2.5 million contract earlier this month. He could be used as a starter or a reliever with his new team. |

Tue Jan 17 2012 | 14:06 | Cardinals avoid arb. with McClellan |
The Cardinals and RHP Kyle McClellan avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract. |
The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed. McClellan, 27, posted a 4.19 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 141 2/3 innings last year, serving as both a starter and reliever. He's expected to work in long relief in 2012. |

Tue Oct 18 2011 | 16:49 | McClellan will not be on World Series roster |
Kyle McClellan told B.J. Rains of FOXSportsMidwest.com that he will not be on the Cardinals' roster for the World Series. |
McClellan, who was left off the NLDS roster, allowed one run on two hits over one-third of an inning in his only appearance during the NLCS against the Brewers. It's not clear who will replace him on the roster for the World Series, but Jake Westbrook sounds like a natural candidate. |

Sun Oct 9 2011 | 11:53 | Cardinals add McClellan, Lynn to roster |
The Cardinals have dropped Skip Schumaker (oblique) and Jake Westbrook from their NLCS roster and replaced them with Kyle McClellan and Lance Lynn. |
McClellan was left off the NLDS roster due to a "dead arm," but he's been throwing bullpen sessions and evidently feels well enough that the Cardinals think he can contribute. Lynn has been out since early August with a strained oblique but has been throwing pain-free for a couple weeks. Though he could be rusty, Lynn could also be a factor in the bullpen, having posted a 2.22 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 32/8 K/BB ratio over 24 1/3 innings out of the bullpen for the Cards. |

Fri Oct 7 2011 | 09:42 | Kyle McClellan hopes to be on NLCS roster |
Kyle McClellan (dead arm) hopes to be added to the NLCS roster if the Cardinals make it. |
McClellan has been throwing bullpen sessions in hopes that he'll have improved his health and strength enough to be part of the next round's roster. It's no guarantee that it will happen, but he gives the Cards another option. McClellan posted a 7.71 ERA in September while allowing five home runs over his last 11 2/3 innings. |

Sat Oct 1 2011 | 09:39 | Kyle McClellan left off NLDS roster |
Kyle McClellan has been left off the Cardinals' NLDS roster due to what GM John Mozeliak refers to as a "dead arm." |
McClellan admitted to being fatigued after he escaped a bases-loaded jam in Monday's outing. The right-hander has really struggled down the stretch, posting a 7.71 ERA in September while allowing five home runs in his last 11 2/3 innings. He's given up at least one earned run in three of his last four appearances. McClellan, in effect, will be replaced by Jake Westbrook, who will be moved to the bullpen and used as a long reliever. |

Fri Sep 30 2011 | 16:42 | McClellan could be left off NLDS roster |
Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said Friday that Kyle McClellan could be left off the NLDS roster against the Phillies. |
McClellan is dealing with arm fatigue, which is perhaps an explanation why he posted a 7.71 ERA and 6/6 K/BB ratio over 11 2/3 innings this month. We should learn the full composition of the roster soon, but Jake Westbrook is expected to pitch out of the bullpen. |

Wed Aug 3 2011 | 09:18 | McClellan rolls ankle in win over Brewers |
Kyle McClellan was removed from Tuesday's game against the Brewers in the 11th inning after rolling his right ankle. |
After tossing a scoreless 10th inning, McClellan struck out Prince Fielder and allowed a single to Casey McGehee before being replaced by Octavio Dotel, who recorded the final two outs of the ballgame. Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said that McClellan was being removed from the game regardless of the condition of his ankle. However, he can be considered day-to-day. |
