Wed Aug 12 202001:34Shaw, Blue Jays beat Marlins 5-4 in MLB's return to Buffalo
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — In the first major league game in Buffalo since 1915, Travis Shaw hit an RBI single in the 10th inning and the Toronto Blue Jays settled into their new nest with a 5-4 win over the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night.Barred from playing in Toronto by the Canadian government over concerns about the coronavirus, the Blue Jays spent nearly three weeks on the road before moving into the ballpark of their Triple-A affiliate as their temporary home this year.Francisco Cervelli’s three-run homer with two outs in the Miami ninth made it 4-all. Logan Forsythe then nearly put the Marlins ahead with a long drive in the 10th that originally was ruled a two-run homer, then reversed to a foul ball on review — the replay cameras were among the upgrades made at the park to get it up to big league standards. The Blue Jays loaded the bases with one out in the 10th and Shaw singled to right field for his first RBI in 25 at-bats with Toronto.Bo Bichette hit a three-run homer in the sixth and... [More]

Mon Jul 20 202021:52Orioles face prospect of opening without Means, Smith
The Baltimore Orioles placed outfielder Dwight Smith Jr. on the 10-day injured list Monday, and manager Brandon Hyde isn't sure if left-hander John Means will be able to start the opener at Boston on Friday night.Baltimore will start the season without outfielder Stevie Wilkerson, who fractured a finger on his left hand in an exhibition game at Philadelphia on Sunday night and will miss “significant time," Hyde said Monday night after the Orioles' 4-2 exhibition loss to Washington. The loss of Wilkerson and Smith's uncertain status leaves the Orioles lacking outfield depth. Smith recently returned to the team after testing positive for the coronavirus and still needs time to get into baseball shape.Hyde said the Orioles have the option of activating Smith “at any time” and that he could still be on the opening day roster. But at this point, Smith is trying to work his way back.“He just hasn’t participated in a full-squad workout,” Hyde said.Means developed a sore arm late last week and missed... [More]

Wed Mar 4 202013:09Orioles' John Means hopes that 2019 success was no fluke
SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — John Means was a long shot to even make the Baltimore Orioles' roster a year ago. Each time the Orioles added a player to the 40-man roster, Means thought he'd be the one to lose his spot. Means not only survived spring training with the Orioles, he became their most dependable pitcher and the team's All-Star representative. The 26-year-old left-hander, who never made any of the Orioles' top prospect lists, had a solid season, with a 12-11 record and 3.60 ERA. Means finished second in American League rookie of the year voting. This year, Means not only has a spot on the club, he could be the Orioles' opening day starter on March 26. However, he said that's not something he's thinking about.“I actually haven’t looked that far ahead,” Means said. “I’m sure some people have, but I’m just focused on the next outing, to be honest.”Manager Brandon Hyde has, but hasn't decided whether Means will face the New York Yankees in Baltimore's opener. However, with the Orioles playing... [More]
Sat Feb 15 202015:08Alex Cobb hopes to justify Orioles' huge investment in him
SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — This is not the kind of start Alex Cobb envisioned when he signed a four-year, $57 million contract with Baltimore Orioles during the latter stages of spring training in 2018.That first year was awful for the Orioles and not a very good one for Cobb, either, who struggled to a 5-15 record and a 4.90 ERA while the team lost a franchise-record 115 games. Last season was even worse for the 32-year-old right-hander. He made only three starts for the Orioles before he needed season-ending hip surgery, winding up 0-2 with a 10.95 ERA. He also had a knee procedure. Halfway into the contract, Cobb and his teammate first baseman Chris Davis, who still has three years left on his seven-year, $161 million deal, are by far the two highest-paid players on the Orioles, and the only two players for whom money is guaranteed beyond this season. “You sign going into that season with such high expectations not only for yourself but for the team and it’s been everything but that,” Cobb... Tue Feb 11 202016:43Orioles begin hopeful spring training in Year 2 of rebuild
SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — A year ago, Mike Elias and Brandon Hyde were in their first spring training together as Baltimore Orioles general manager and manager. After a season of 108 losses, they're back for Year 2. The Orioles have 67 players on their spring roster, and Elias said that he likes the group that the Orioles have. “Going over the 40-man roster and looking at the players that are here, we’ve got hopes for all of them, and they’re all talented, and they have things to like about them, so we definitely feel like it’s coming together," Elias said. “It’s a part of a longer process, but it’s moving in the right direction.”Baltimore's biggest issue is trying to construct a starting rotation. Last season, 18 pitchers started for the Orioles, and they had a horrifying 5.57 ERA. In December, Baltimore traded right-hander Dylan Bundy to the Los Angeles Angels for four minor league pitchers. Bundy was one of the Orioles' most accomplished starters. In the rotation so far, Baltimore has left-hander... [More]
