Mets designate RHP Ryota Igarashi for assignment. |
Sandy Alderson and company don't have to make excuses for the previous regime, so they ultimately felt like the $1.75 million left on his contract worth wasn't worth wasting a spot on the 40-man roster. The Japanese right-hander was a major disappointment in his first season stateside, posting a 7.12 ERA and 25/18 K/BB ratio over 30 1/3 innings. |

With his ERA sitting at 7.91 in 19 1/3 innings, Igarashi had fallen out of favor in the Mets pen. He'll probably spend 10 days at St. Lucie before the Mets decide whether to bring him back to the majors or to get him some work in Triple-A. It didn't make sense to send him to Triple-A Buffalo now since they have their All-Star break coming up as well. |

There had been talk that Igarashi's return would give the Mets a chance to send down Jenrry Mejia to Triple-A and groom him to be a starter, but that's not the case as Manny Acosta is the unlucky winner of a trip to Buffalo. Igarashi missed nearly a month with his hamstring injury, but the Mets are certainly glad to have him back as their overworked bullpen is tied for the league lead in innings pitched at 159 IP. |
