Sat Jun 15 201301:15Oliver Perez works scoreless ninth
Oliver Perez pitched a scoreless ninth in a 3-2 game for his first career save Friday against the A's.
Perez was manager Eric Wedge's choice for the ninth even though the A's had two righties up to start the inning. But there may have been a little strategy there, too; had Wedge gone to righty Carter Capps instead, Brandon Moss and John Jaso likely would have entered as pinch-hitters. Since Perez got the job done, allowing just a soft single in the process, consider him the short-term favorite for saves in Seattle's pen. Tom Wilhelmsen still figures to get a chance to reclaim the job within the next 7-14 days.

Sun May 19 201304:00Perez slapped with first loss of the season
Oliver Perez took the loss in Saturday's game against the Indians after he allowed a run on two hits and a walk without recording an out.
Perez had been lights out prior to last night and this is the first update we've done on him in 2013. Such is life as a middle reliever. Those of us that snickered when Seattle signed Ollie in 2012 -- each and every one of us, in other words -- have been silenced. The formerly maligned left-hander from Mexico put up a 2.12 ERA in 2012 and currently sits at 1.62 in 2013. After years spent as an overpaid source of angst for Mets fans, Perez has proved a great bargain in the Northwest.

Sat Nov 3 201222:07Oliver Perez agrees to one-year deal with M's
Mariners re-signed LHP Oliver Perez to a one-year contract.
Terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed. The 31-year-old left-hander was a pleasant surprise for the Mariners in 2012, posting a 2.12 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 24/10 K/BB ratio over 29 2/3 innings.

Sat Jun 16 201218:18Mariners recall Oliver Perez from Triple-A
Mariners purchased the contract of LHP Oliver Perez from Triple-A Tacoma.
Welcome back to the show, Ollie! He hasn't appeared in a big league game since going 0-5 with a 6.80 ERA for the Mets in 2010. And he's struggled in a relief role at Triple-A this year, with a 4.65 ERA over 22 appearances. The Mariners aren't likely to trust him in high-leverage situations.

Wed Jan 18 201218:39Mariners sign Oliver Perez to minors contract
Mariners signed LHP Oliver Perez to a minor league contract.
The deal includes an invitation to major league spring training. Perez showed some signs of life last year at Double-A Harrisburg, registering a 3.09 ERA and 58/27 K/BB ratio in 75 2/3 innings, but he's highly unlikely to land a spot on the Mariners' Opening Day roster.

Thu Jun 16 201112:43Ollie on DL in minors with lat injury
Oliver Perez is on the disabled list with Double-A Harrisburg due to a lat injury.
Perez signed a minor league deal with the Nationals after being released by the Mets during spring training. While he has a 2.22 ERA and 21/3 K/BB ratio over five starts with Double-A Harrisburg, the Nationals don't sound very impressed. "I don't think we'll be seeing him in the big leagues any time soon," said one Nationals' official.

Tue May 17 201112:31Nats assign Ollie to Double-A
The Nationals have assigned left-hander Oliver Perez to Double-A Harrisburg.
Perez inked a minor league contract with the Nationals near the end of spring training after getting his release from the Mets. He's been working out for the past six weeks at extended spring training. We're not hopeful for anything, though it's worth noting that he'll be sharing a clubhouse with Bryce Harper.

Mon Apr 4 201112:37Ollie working out at Nats' spring complex
Oliver Perez is working on mechanical changes at the Nationals' spring training complex.
Ollie inked a minor league contract with the Nationals soon after he was released by the Mets in late March. He has been working out daily with Nats pitching coordinator Spin Williams. "He's in a good place," Nationals director of player development Doug Harris said Monday. "He's been great. His attitude has been wonderful. He's eager to learn and change."

Wed Mar 23 201115:19Nationals sign Oliver Perez to minors deal
Nationals signed LHP Oliver Perez to a minor league contract.
Well, that was fast. It's just a minor league deal, so it's hard to blame them, but fixing Perez is no small task. The 29-year-old left-hander has always struggled with his command, so he won't have any chance of success unless he can find his velocity again.

Wed Mar 23 201115:13Report: Nationals in talks with Oliver Perez
According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the Nationals are in talks with free agent left-hander Oliver Perez.
It would be a minor league deal. Perez is left-handed and still only 29 years old, so we fully expect him to latch on somewhere, but whoever picks him up will have to have a lot of patience. The erratic left-hander has a 6.81 ERA and 99/100 K/BB ratio over the past two seasons.

Tue Mar 22 201120:59D-Backs not interested in Oliver Perez
According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, the Diamondbacks are not interested in Oliver Perez.
Scratch another potential suitor off the list. The D-Backs were floated as a possibility because of Perez's history with Kevin Towers in San Diego, but it doesn't sound like they will reunite in Arizona.

Tue Mar 22 201116:51Yankees have no interest in Oliver Perez
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Tuesday that he has no interest in free agent left-hander Oliver Perez.
"It's not something that makes sense for us," said Cashman, shooting down a report by Jon Heyman of SI.com. The Yankees could certainly use some starting pitching help, but Perez is more of a headache than anything else. The erratic left-hander is sure to latch on somewhere, but he's going to earn his way back to the big leagues.

Mon Mar 21 201118:28Yankees interested in Oliver Perez?
Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that "Yankees people" have discussed signing Oliver Perez.
We'll believe it when we see it, especially when Heyman notes that Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is "not that enthused" about the idea. Many believe the best fit could be in Arizona, where he could be reunited with Kevin Towers, who signed him to his first contract as general manager of the Padres in 1999.

Mon Mar 21 201108:33Mets finally release left-hander Oliver Perez
Mets released LHP Oliver Perez.
The move was finally made on Monday morning. Perez entered spring camp this year with his roster spot up in the air and he did nothing to earn himself an extended opportunity, allowing nine earned runs in 9 2/3 innings of Grapefruit League work. The Mets are still on the hook for his remaining $12 million in salary.

Sun Mar 20 201113:12Perez leaves Mets' complex, still on roster
Oliver Perez left the Mets' complex Sunday but is still on the roster.
Perez said no one has told him what to expect about his role for the coming season. He's currently battling Mike O'Connor for the spot as the Mets' second lefty reliever. Brian Costa of The Wall Street Journal writes that a decision is expected on Perez Monday. He's a likely candidate to be released.

Tue Mar 15 201122:24Perez has latest audition in bullpen Tuesday
Oliver Perez tossed two-thirds of an inning against the Nationals on Tuesday night, walking one and striking out one.
Perez entered the game to face left-handed batter Adam LaRoche, who he quickly walked on four pitches, but was able to strike out Laynce Nix and get Rick Ankiel to ground out to first base to end the inning. Ollie hasn't allowed a run over his first two appearances in his new left-handed specialist role, but he's still throwing in the mid-to-low 80s. We suspect it's only a matter of time before he is shown the door.

Mon Mar 14 201116:52Warthen rallied to support Perez
Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen argued last week that Oliver Perez deserved a shot in the bullpen.
Many in the organization were ready to give up on the erratic left-hander, but Warthen wanted to see what he could do with one final shot in the bullpen. Perez retired the only batter he faced on Sunday, but Warthen admitted that he won't be of much value to the Mets as a lefty specialist if he can't command his pitches or improve his velocity. "The scary part is the walks," said Warthen. "If he comes in and walks Utley or Howard or (Brian) McCann, then he is useless to us." The expectation is that the Mets will still cut Perez loose before Opening Day.

Wed Mar 9 201115:36Ollie to get chance as reliever
Mets manager Terry Collins confirmed that Oliver Perez will be given a chance to win a job in the bullpen.
Whatever you say, Terry. Perez has already been knocked out of the competition for the rotation, which was highly unlikely to begin with, and we're not expecting much as a left-handed specialist, either. Look for the Mets to cut Perez loose before the end of spring training.

Wed Mar 9 201110:05Mets won't release Perez on Wednesday
According to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News, the Mets will not release Oliver Perez on Wednesday.
Perez is no longer in the mix to be a starter -- he never was, really -- but the Mets will now give him a shot to win a job out of the bullpen. Well, sort of. According to Martino, he will get two appearances out of the bullpen. If they aren't stellar, he'll be cut. We're pretty sure they won't see anything revelatory, so this sounds like a tremendous waste of time.

Tue Mar 8 201116:28Mets to meet about Oliver Perez
Mets manager Terry Collins will meet with general manager Sandy Alderson and pitching coach Dan Warthen on Wednesday to discuss the next step for Oliver Perez.
Perez is no longer a candidate for the starting rotation, but the club is still giving him an opportunity to fill their lefty specialist role. However, that may change following today's shaky outing against the Astros. Either way, the Mets have already wasted entirely too much energy on Perez this spring.
