Updating a previous item, Reds manager Dusty Baker said that Scott Rolen (throat) will likely return during the team's upcoming series against the Giants.
Rolen is out of the starting lineup for the fourth straight day Thursday. "I talked to the doctor," Baker said. "It's not strep throat as diagnosed by Scott. It's a viral infection in the throat. The doctor said it takes three or four days to run its course. It's worse in the heat. It will be better once we get to San Francisco." Miguel Cairo will continue to fill in at third base during his absence.

Fri May 13 201115:15Scott Rolen (shoulder) activated from DL
Reds activated 3B Scott Rolen from the 15-day disabled list.
Rolen hasn't tested out his shoulder in game action, so it remains to be seen how it will respond, but he's in the lineup Friday for the first game of the big series against the Cardinals. With a .217/.246/.417 batting line with two homers before the injury, he's not safe for mixed league lineups right now.

Fri May 13 201111:05Scott Rolen could be back in lineup Friday
John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer thinks Scott Rolen (shoulder) will be back in the Reds' lineup Friday.
Rolen has been swinging a bat for a few days, but the Reds have been vague about a possible timetable for him. It would make sense that he would return for the big three-game series against the Cardinals, but we'll have to see if he's physically up for it.

Tue May 3 201119:29Scott Rolen feeling better
Scott Rolen (shoulder) will not come off the DL Friday when he's first eligible, but he's feeling better.
"I'm feeling better. I have more motion in my shoulders," Rolen said. "I can feel this stuff [between his neck and back] letting go a little bit. It's giving me some range of motion and some relief." Rolen has started acupuncture and even was able to take a few swings in the batting cage, though he did that without the Reds' permission. "It was a covert operation, around the middle of the game, so nobody could be around," he said. "I had it all set except for the doctor walking in. I took about five unauthorized swings." There's currently no timetable for the third baseman's return.

Sun May 1 201115:00Scott Rolen unlikely to come off DL Friday
Scott Rolen (shoulder) is unlikely to come off the DL Friday, the first day he's eligible.
The Reds said a few days ago that Rolen was likely to be ready that day, but he had yet to really test out his shoulder at that point, so it really was just a guess. He's dealt with a knot in his trapezius muscle. "We don't have a timetable, to be honest," Reds trainer Paul Lessard said. "He's doing real well with what we're doing, with strengthening exercises, but I want to make sure he's a little stronger than he is right now before we start swinging. I don't want to aggravate what we've got built up."

Fri Apr 29 201117:08Rolen dealing with knot in trapezius muscle
Scott Rolen is currently dealing with a knot in his trapezius muscle.
And he won't begin hitting until the issue subsides. Rolen initially hoped to return from the disabled list on May 6, but he has only played catch so far. Looks like he'll need more than a minimum stay on the DL.

Fri Apr 29 201109:42Scott Rolen expects to be ready when eligible
Scott Rolen (shoulder) expects to be ready for activation from the disabled list when he is first eligible on May 6.
It's good news, but Rolen has yet to test out his shoulder, which he'll obviously have to do soon if he really intends on being back in a week. It's the same shoulder that's given him issues over the years, so we can't be sure it won't continue to be an issue for him even if he does come back as early as possible.

Sun Apr 24 201113:59Scott Rolen (shoulder) lands on disabled list
Reds placed 3B Scott Rolen on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left shoulder.
Rolen hasn't played since Wednesday and the Reds evidently were tired of waiting on him. It's the same shoulder that's given him issues in the past, and a couple cortisone injections didn't even help. The Reds will go with Miguel Cairo as the primary third baseman while Rolen is out.

Fri Apr 22 201117:13Rolen sidelined with left shoulder soreness
Scott Rolen is currently sidelined with left shoulder soreness.
Rolen said he received two injections on Thursday and believes it's "feasible" he could play this weekend. We'd like to believe that, but the 36-year-old third baseman has had plenty of problems with this very same shoulder in the past. Miguel Cairo will continue to fill in at third base for now.

Fri Apr 22 201116:30Rolen out of Reds' lineup again Friday
Scott Rolen is out of the Reds' lineup for the second straight day Friday.
We haven't heard anything about an injury, but consecutive days out of the lineup immediately raises some eyebrows given his history. Miguel Cairo gets the start at third base and bats seventh against Kyle McClellan.

Scott Rolen is out of Thursday afternoon's lineup against the Diamondbacks.
We're thinking he's just getting the day off with the early start. Miguel Cairo will play third base and bat sixth against right-hander Daniel Hudson.

Thu Apr 7 201109:47Rolen not in Thursday's lineup
Scott Rolen is out of the Reds' lineup for Thursday's matinee against the Astros.
We're guessing the veteran third baseman is getting the day off because of the quick turnaround. Juan Francisco will start at the hot corner and bat seventh against Brett Myers.

Thu Mar 24 201117:32Rolen exits game Thursday with hand injury
Scott Rolen left Thursday's Cactus League game with an apparent hand injury.
Rolen was unable to grip the bat after he was hit by a pitch. That's never a good sign, but there's no way of knowing yet how serious his hand injury might be. The Reds are sure to run him through a round of tests on Thursday evening. Expect an update soon.

Wed Nov 10 201015:40Rolen wins eighth career Gold Glove Award
Scott Rolen was awarded with his eighth career Gold Glove on Wednesday.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the group, as many expected the award to go to Ryan Zimmerman. This is his first Gold Glove since 2006. Troy Tulowitzki, Carlos Gonzalez and Bronson Arroyo rounded out the first-time winners, while Albert Pujols took first base back from Adrian Gonzalez, Brandon Phillips won at second base and Yadier Molina won his third straight Gold Glove behind the plate. Shane Victorino and Michael Bourn rounded out the outfield as repeat winners.
