Thu Sep 23 201015:50Cards' Suppan defeats Pirates
Jeff Suppan won for the second time this season after allowing one run in five innings Thursday against the Pirates.
Three guesses which team his other win came against. Actually, dating back to Aug. 2008, six of his last 11 wins have come versus the Pirates. Suppan allowed four hits, walked two and struck out two in a brisk 66-pitch outing today.
Wed Sep 15 201017:49Suppan to take Garcia's spot in rotation
Jeff Suppan will take over Jaime Garcia's spot in the Cardinals' rotation.
The Cards decided to shut Garcia down on Wednesday because of a high innings total. Suppan, 35, has posted a 5.85 ERA and 1.79 WHIP over 80 total innings this season and should be avoided in all fantasy formats.

Wed Sep 1 201017:04Cards' Suppan loses in return from DL
Making his return to the rotation, Jeff Suppan surrendered four runs over five innings in a loss to the Astros on Wednesday.
That's pretty much par for the course with Suppan, who is now 1-7 with a 5.82 ERA. The Cardinals will hurt themselves with each start they give him this month.
Wed Sep 1 201013:25Cards activate Suppan for Wednesday start
Cardinals activated RHP Jeff Suppan from the 15-day disabled list.
Oh, that will stop the bleeding, alright. The veteran right-hander will get the call for Wednesday's game against the Astros as the Cards skip rookie Jaime Garcia in the starting rotation. Suppan has been on the shelf for the past month due to a strained right groin. We don't have a good feeling about this.
Tue Aug 24 201012:39Cards' Suppan throws pain-free bullpen
Jeff Suppan (groin) threw a pain-free bullpen session on Monday, but his return is still uncertain.
Suppan feels good and is by most accounts ready to go, but because he is on the DL and the team doesn't have an opening in the rotation right now, he may just have to stay in the minor leagues until rosters expand. Beyond the occasional spot start in deeper leagues, he's not a good fantasy option when he joins the major leagues again.

Tue Aug 17 201022:55Suppan (groin) tosses three simulated innings
Jeff Suppan (groin) felt pain-free after tossing three simulated innings on Tuesday.
"I thought he threw the ball well," said Cardinals manager Tony La Russa. "He didn't look like he was favoring his groin at all. Stuff was good. Location was good. I thought he got a lot out of it." There's no timetable for his return, but Suppan could be a consideration in the starting rotation again if Kyle Lohse struggles.

Wed Aug 11 201009:55Cards place Suppan on 15-day DL
Cardinals placed RHP Jeff Suppan on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 1, with right groin soreness.
Suppan began feeling something in his groin while attempting to run on Monday, one day after his scheduled Sunday start was rained out. He was unlikely to pitch out of the bullpen this week or even feel well enough to start against the Cubs this weekend, so that made this an easy call.
Sat Jul 31 201023:11Suppan picks up first win as Cardinals roll
Jeff Suppan won his first game Saturday since September 19 of last season, as he shut out the Pirates over 5 1/3 frames in an 11-1 victory.
The right-hander surrendered five hits, walked no one and struck out five. Suppan has actually pitched respectably with St. Louis, holding a 4.14 ERA over eight starts (though an 18/15 K/BB rate over 41 1/3 innings leaves a lot to be desired). This might have been his last outing with the club, though, as Jake Westbrook has arrived, and Kyle Lohse will likely be back from a rehab assignment the next time a No. 5 starter is needed.
Fri Jul 23 201016:52Cards' Suppan falls to 0-6
Jeff Suppan fell to 0-6 after giving up five runs in six innings Friday against the Cubs.
Suppan was let down by his defense early on, but we're not sure what the fielders were supposed to do about the homers hit by Tyler Colvin, Geovany Soto and Alfonso Soriano. Suppan has allowed 11 homers in just 67 innings on the season.
Sat Jul 10 201021:37Suppan allows four earned in loss to Astros
Jeff Suppan allowed four earned runs in 4 2/3 innings Saturday as the Cardinals fell to the Astros.
The Cardinals have to begin looking for better options, especially with the Reds maintaining a consistent lead in the National League Central. Suppan simply isn't cutting it, just as he didn't cut it in his years with the Brewers. He has a 6.55 ERA and a 1.95 WHIP on the season.
Fri Jun 25 201023:02Suppan allows seven hits, three earned to KC
Jeff Suppan allowed seven hits and three earned runs in five innings Friday as the Cardinals fell to the Royals.
Suppan has done a decent enough job as a fill-in starter for the Cards this month, but fans in St. Louis can be thankful that his tenure with the club may almost be up. Brad Penny is set to throw off a mound Monday and should be back in about two weeks. Suppan has a 6.65 ERA and 1.90 WHIP this year.
Mon Jun 14 201017:39Cardinals officially sign Jeff Suppan
Cardinals signed RHP Jeff Suppan.
The Cardinals will only have to pay a prorated portion of the major league minimum. Suppan, 35, posted a 7.84 ERA over his first 11 relief appearances and two starts this season before being released by the Brewers last week. It's unlikely that he has a whole lot left, but Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan might be able to work some magic. Suppan is slated to start against the Mariners on Tuesday.
Sun Jun 13 201016:41Cards to ink Suppan, start him Tuesday
The Cardinals plan to add Jeff Suppan to the roster on Monday.
He will start on Tuesday against the Mariners and fill in until Brad Penny returns from the disabled list or he simply blows the opportunity with further ineptness. Suppan, 35, produced a 7.84 ERA in 13 appearances -- two starts -- this season for the Brewers. He doesn't deserve fantasy consideration in any format at this time. Adam Ottavino, meanwhile, is a candidate to get sent down to make room for Suppan.

Sat Jun 12 201018:11Cards impressed with Suppan, will make deal
The Cardinals were impressed Saturday by Jeff Suppan's bullpen session and plan to ink him to a deal early next week.
Suppan will be placed immediately into the Cardinals' starting rotation and will fill in until either Brad Penny returns from the disabled list or the former Brewer blows the chance on his own. Suppan, 35, has a 7.84 ERA in 13 total appearances -- two starts -- this season.

Fri Jun 11 201021:14Jeff Suppan to throw for Cards on Saturday
Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that free agent right-hander Jeff Suppan will throw a bullpen session for the Cardinals on Saturday.
He was originally scheduled to throw on Friday, however inclement weather delayed his flight to Phoenix. "He's coming into to throw for us," said Cardinals manager Tony La Russa. "We're hopeful. Wait until tomorrow. Just watch him throw. Based on how he throws, go to the next step. We have a history with him. He's available. I think (pitching coach Dave Duncan) has seen something that makes him think there's some Soup left." Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said that he has a deal in place with the veteran right-hander, however the team wants make sure he is healthy first.

Thu Jun 10 201015:34Report: Cardinals sign Jeff Suppan
Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Cardinals have signed right-hander Jeff Suppan.
Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan likes a challenge, but we're not sure Suppan can be saved at this point. The veteran right-hander was released by the Brewers earlier this week after posting a 7.84 ERA over 13 relief appearances and two starts this season. Of course, Suppan rode the Cardinals' World Series run to a disastrous four-year, $42 million contract with the Brewers in December of 2006. Suppan was 44-26 with a 3.95 ERA with the Cardinals from 2004-2006.

Mon Jun 7 201014:02Brewers dump disappointing righty Jeff Suppan
Brewers released RHP Jeff Suppan.
Suppan was inked to a four-year, $42 million contract back in December of 2006. That deal looks absolutely ridiculous now, considering the state of the economy, but mostly because of the way the right-hander has pitched. In 110 games with Milwaukee, Suppan was 29-36 with a 5.08 ERA. He had a 7.84 ERA and had allowed 50 hits in 31 innings (two starts) this season.
Mon Jun 7 201013:28Report: Brewers release righty Jeff Suppan
Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the Brewers have released right-hander Jeff Suppan.

Sun Apr 25 201012:45Suppan heads to bullpen; Narveson to rotation
MLB.com's Adam McCalvy reports that the Brewers are sending Jeff Suppan to the bullpen. Chris Narveson will start in his place on Wednesday.
Apparently the Cubs started a trend of putting overpaid, underperforming starters in the bullpen when they dumped Carlos Zambrano. Narveson will be the fill-in for Suppan, but isn't worth adding as a starter. He's a passable option if your league counts holds, but he's not going to set the world on fire as a starter.

Sat Apr 24 201017:49Brewers may dump Suppan from rotation
Brewers manager Ken Macha acknowledged Saturday that there has been "some discussion" about dumping Jeff Suppan from the starting rotation.
Suppan has surrendered 16 hits over his first 9 1/3 innings of the season, putting his ERA at an ugly 8.68. Chris Narverson is a likely fill-in, as is Manny Parra. But there's no point in speculating any further until the Brewers pull the trigger. Suppan should not be owned in any fantasy format.
