Fri Aug 24 201211:17Wash has no plans to bench Michael Young
Rangers manager Ron Washington has no intention of benching Michael Young.
Young has just four home runs and is sporting a .654 OPS, but his manager believes he should remain an everyday player. "So, I just forget the previous 11 seasons he's had for the Texas Rangers, and I forget last season when he was a league MVP candidate, and I just push (him) aside?" Washington asked rhetorically. "Well, that ain't going to be me. If I'm doing that, then I'm turning my back on Michael, and I'm also impacting our clubhouse, and outside of talent, the strength of any team is the makeup and structure of your clubhouse." Mike Olt's spot on the bench is entrenched.

Michael Young went 3-for-5 with a home run, double and five RBI in Sunday's 11-2 rout of the Blue Jays.
The home run was Young's first since May 7, a span of 88 games. He took Henderson Alvarez deep in the Rangers' five-run fifth. The multi-RBI afternoon was just Young's third in 34 games since the All-Star break. He now has 50 runs driven in on the season. Young is batting .272/.304/.351 through Texas' first 120 games after hitting .338/.380/.474 in 2011.

Wed Aug 15 201212:55Rangers don't plan to bench Michael Young
Rangers manager Ron Washington said during a radio appearance Wednesday that he's stick with Michael Young in his starting lineup.
Young is hitting just .269 with a .643 OPS in 112 games this season and hasn't homered since May 7. Still, Washington has no plans on taking away his playing time. "I plan to give Michael Young a day off, but as far as discussing benching Michael Young and all of this stuff, that's not what's on my mind," said Washington. "I feel like for the past 11 years he's been a devoted baseball player to the Texas community and now that he's struggling a little bit, we're going to jump off the ship? I'm not." Unfortunately Mike Olt is the innocent victim of Washington's faith in Young. The top prospect has only logged 15 plate appearances since being called up from the minors earlier this month.

Mon Jul 9 201200:39Michael Young collects four hits in win
Michael Young had his first four-hit game of the season Sunday and knocked in two runs.
In a long overdue move, the Rangers finally dropped Young from fifth to sixth in the lineup Saturday. He should probably hit even lower against righties, but it's a start. Young is due for a better second half, but for all his clutch skills, he's just not one of the Rangers' five or six best hitters against righties. Of course, it's worth noting that when he does warm up, he tends to stay that way for a while.

Young doubled home two runs in the first. Both the extra-base hit and multi-knock effort were his first in five games. Hitting a weak .268/.300/.352 through Texas' first 82 games, it may not be long before Young is finally dropped from the five spot in the Rangers lineup.

Fri Jun 29 201212:55Michael Young struggling since April
Michael Young is batting just .257 with one home run since the beginning of May.
Young hit .326/.362/.427 in April but has really faded since. His lack of power hasn't been just not hitting home runs, either, as he's currently on pace for just 27 doubles, which would be the lowest mark since his first full season back in 2002. Young should rebound to a degree, but he's 35, so it's not inconceivable to think a decline has begun.

Michael Young is expected to start at first base for the Rangers in the first two games of the World Series.
Ron Washington declined to officially name him the starter, saying only that Young will play with no designated hitter available for the first two games. Given Mitch Moreland's struggles it wouldn't be surprising if he stays there throughout the series. Young started 36 games at first base during the regular-season and four of 10 in the postseason.
