Dexter Pittman reported via his Twitter account that he needs knee surgery.
Pittman injured his knee while playing for the Sioux Falls Skyforce of the NBADL. The exact nature of the surgery is unclear right now. The second-round pick was averaging 14.5 points and 8.2 rebounds in 22 minor-league games.

The Heat have assigned rookie Dexter Pittman to the D-League.
Pittman wasn't in the rotation anyway, but for what it's worth he has LeBron's support -- "I am (heart-broken)," James said after Thursday's practice in Miami. "That's my rook, right there...I see a lot of potential in him."

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra expects rookie center Dexter Pittman to remain in the D-League for about "another 10 days."
Spoelstra's summary of Pittman's play speaks to the rookie's current weaknesses -- "He finished up with another 36-minute game, with 15 (points) and 10 (rebounds). That's the first thing I look at is minutes, that speaks to his conditioning, the fact that he's actually staying out on the court and not fouling."

After Udonis Haslem went down there was brief speculation that Pittman could crack the rotation, but he's too raw. He'll get far more experience playing in Sioux Falls for the Skyforce.

Pittman needs some serious seasoning before he's ready to contribute at the NBA level. With Erick Dampier coming aboard, Pittman's big body isn't even needed at practice.
