Jake Westbrook allowed three runs on six hits and five walks in eight innings of work on Wednesday, falling to 9-6 in St. Louis' 5-1 loss to the Brewers.

Fri Aug 5 201122:30Westbrook quality in no-decision
Jake Westbrook allowed two runs on six hits and three walks in six innings of work on Friday, taking a no-decision in St. Louis' 3-2 win over the Marlins.
He struck out four. The quality start was Westbrook's fourth straight, and he's managed to lower his ERA from 5.34 to 4.83 over his past five starts. His next outing should come on Thursday against the Brewers.

Thu Jul 21 201115:34Jake Westbrook goes eight innings in win
Jake Westbrook allowed just two runs and four hits over eight innings Thursday in the Cardinals' 6-2 win over the Mets.
Avoiding what would have been a sweep in New York. It'd sure be a boon for the Cardinals if Westbrook could finally turn his season around. He got 15 outs on the ground today and he walked only one in lowering his ERA to 5.04.

Sun Jul 10 201112:58Westbrook to start first game after break
The Cardinals will go with Jake Westbrook, Chris Carpenter, Jaime Garcia, Kyle Lohse and Kyle McClellan for the first five games after the All-Star break.
It's a different order than was given before, and it's interesting that they'd go with Westbrook first considering he's been their worst starter to this point. The Cards will likely try to limit McClellan's innings down the stretch as much as possible, and he might even wind up back in the bullpen if they acquire a starter.

Thu Jul 7 201100:29Westbrook takes lucky no-decision
Jake Westbrook allowed five runs before recording an out on Wednesday evening, ultimately allowing seven runs on eight hits and one walk in 4 1/3 innings of St. Louis' 9-8, 13-inning loss to the Reds.
Westbrook served up a home run to Chris Heisey on the first pitch of the game before allowing a single to Edgar Renteria and walking Joey Votto. Brandon Phillips then laced a two-RBI triple before Jay Bruce hit a two-run homer. The nightmare start comes just one outing after Westbrook held the Rays to two hits in seven scoreless innings of work. Tonight was the fourth time in his past five starts that he's allowed at least four runs. For the season, he now owns a 5.34 ERA and 1.61 WHIP.

Fri Jul 1 201121:57Westbrook throws 7-innings of two-hit ball
Jake Westbrook became the latest pitcher to dominate the Rays in Tampa on Friday, allowing just two hits in seven scoreless innings of a 5-3 Cardinals victory.
He walked three while striking out seven. Tonight was just the second time all season Westbrook was able to tally more than four strikeouts, and just his third scoreless outing in 17 starts. Now 7-4 with a 4.92 ERA and 1.59 WHIP, Westbrook will get the Reds next Wednesday.

Sat Jun 25 201100:05Jake Westbrook beat up by Jays
Jake Westbrook didn't have his sinker working Friday, as he surrendered four runs on 10 hits and a walk over just 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Blue Jays.
The Cardinals tied the game up in the sixth to get Westbrook off the hook, but the right-hander's ERA is now up to 5.32 and his WHIP is at 1.66. He hasn't registered a quality start in over a month. Westbrook is traditionally a better second half pitcher, and the Cards are counting on that being the case again this year. He faces the Orioles next week.

Sat May 21 201117:11Westbrook blanks Royals in win
Jake Westbrook spun eight shutout innings in a 3-0 win over the Royals on Saturday.
Westbrook was excellent, allowing only four hits -- all singles -- while fanning three and walking three. He threw 65 out of 105 pitches for strikes an induced 12 ground balls in the victory. Westbrook still has an ugly 5.17 ERA for the season, but he has allowed three runs or less in six out of his last seven starts. He'll try to keep the good times rolling with a start against the Rockies next week.

Thu May 5 201116:31Westbrook fans eight as Cardinals beat Fish
Jake Westbrook limited the Marlins to three runs in 6 1/3 innings Thursday in a Cardinals victory.
Westbrook was left with a no-decision but certainly did his part. He carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and struck out eight batters without issuing a walk. The sinkerballer will bring an improving 6.14 ERA into his next outing versus Chicago.

Sat Apr 30 201116:31Westbrook handed no-decision vs. Braves
Jake Westbrook yielded two runs over six innings as part of a no-decision in Saturday's win over the Braves.
Westbrook held the Braves scoreless over the first four innings before giving up a two-run double to Martin Prado in the bottom of the fifth. He gave up four hits -- three of them singles -- while walking three and striking out just one. While he has turned in back-to-back quality starts, he has a 6.53 ERA and an unimpressive 14/19 K/BB ratio over his first six starts this season. He's nothing more than a low-end NL-only option at the moment.

Sun Apr 24 201123:15Cards' Westbrook goes six scoreless in win
Pitching on three days' rest, Jake Westbrook combined with three Cardinals relievers on a three-hit shutout of the Reds on Sunday night.
Whether or not the altered schedule had anything to do it, Westbrook finally found his rhythm tonight. He entered with a 9.82 ERA and a 9/13 K/BB ratio in four starts this season. He opened tonight's game by retiring three straight on groundouts in the first inning. He ended up throwing 87 pitches over six innings. He did walk three, but one of those was an intentional pass to Joey Votto.

Fri Apr 22 201119:07Jake Westbrook confirmed as Sunday starter
Jake Westbrook has been confirmed as the Cardinals' starter for Sunday's game, assuming there aren't any rainouts between now and then.
There's supposed to be rain in St. Louis all weekend, so there's a chance Friday's or Saturday's game could be impacted and make it a moot point. But, assuming those games are played as scheduled, Westbrook will go on three days' rest Sunday after throwing just 67 pitches in his last start.

Fri Apr 22 201110:33Westbrook likely to pitch on three days rest
The Cardinals are leaning toward starting Jake Westbrook on three days rest against the Reds on Sunday.
St. Louis' usual five-day rotation got thrown out of whack by a Tuesday rainout and subsequent Wednesday double-header against the Nationals, but Westbrook threw just 67 pitches in game one, and should be more than fine for Sunday. Of course, the reason he was limited to only 67 pitches was because he got touched for seven runs in three innings, so if you're an owner it might be best to keep him benched this weekend.

Tue Apr 19 201122:31Cardinals/Nationals rained out, DH Wednesday
The Nationals/Cardinals game has been rained out Tuesday and will be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader on Wednesday.
Tuesday's scheduled starters, John Lannan and Jake Westbrook, will presumably just be pushed back to start the first game of the doubleheader. Jordan Zimmermann and Jaime Garcia should get the ball in the nightcap.

Fri Apr 8 201121:16Jake Westbrook wild again
Jake Westbrook surrendered three runs on eight hits and four walks over 5 2/3 innings in Friday's extra innings loss to the Giants.
Miguel Tejada and Pat Burrell tagged him for longballs. The owner of a 2.8 BB/9 rate in his career coming into this season, Westbrook has now walked nine batters in his first two starts, as his control issues from spring training have carried over. Westbrook will look to bounce back next week in Arizona and then in LA.

Sat Apr 2 201119:07Westbrook hammered for eight earned
Jake Westbrook was shelled for eight earned runs in 4 1/3 innings Saturday against the Padres.
Not a great way to start the season. Westbrook left far too many of his sinkers up in the zone and the light-hitting San Diego batting order was able to take advantage. The right-hander finished with five walks and three strikeouts. For the Cardinals to succeed this season, he needs to be far better.

Wed Mar 23 201115:47Cards' Westbrook solid for 5 1/3 innings
Jake Westbrook yielded just an unearned run over 5 1/3 innings in the Cardinals' 5-3 win over the Mets on Wednesday.
Westbrook, who moved up to become the Cards' No. 2 starter in the wake of Adam Wainwright's injury, has a 3.60 ERA this spring. That he's walked just two in 20 innings seems like a good sign. Westbrook will give up hits, but since most of them will be singles, he should be able to keep the Cardinals in games.

Mon Jan 31 201106:02Jake Westbrook confident heading into season
Expressing faith in pitching coach Dave Duncan's tutelage and catcher Yadier Molina's game-calling, Jake Westbrook believes he can build on last season's success with the Cardinals.
Westbrook's first season after Tommy John surgery started poorly in Cleveland, but he was a different pitcher after his late-season trade to St. Louis, posting a 3.48 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over 12 starts. If he remains healthy, Westbrook is a good bet to eat up a lot of innings and potentially improve upon his career averages.

Sat Nov 20 201017:08Westbrook discusses shoulder surgery
Jake Westbrook expects to be on his normal throwing program in the spring after he underwent surgery following the season to repair a tear in his left (non-throwing) labrum.
Westbrook won't be limited from a throwing standpoint, but he probably won't do any hitting, at least not early on. "It only hurt to swing so I wasn't too worried about it," Westbrook said. "I should be good to go when the season starts, and I don't think they're too concerned about my hitting."
Tue Nov 16 201018:24Cards keep Jake Westbrook with two-year deal
Cardinals signed RHP Jake Westbrook to a two-year, $16.5 million contract with a mutual option for 2013.
He probably could have found more guaranteed years elsewhere in a weak market for free agent starters, so the Cardinals did pretty to keep him. Westbrook, 33, went 10-11 with a 4.22 ERA over 33 starts between the Indians and Cardinals this past season, his first since missing the entire 2009 season following Tommy John surgery. He should continue to benefit in the National League.
